To prevent the dodgy turning, especially on 90 degree turns, you could try moving the sensors behind the front wheels. At the moment they are really far away from the centre of rotation so they move towards the black line when the vehicle rotates

You have to put the turning sensors in the middle of your build so they are always on the black line. Then you need to program it that it turns when they dont detect the black line. Thats how you should get over the cross section.

They just need to be between the front and back wheels. The turning radius is directly center of tank steering vehicles, so if they are in the front, there is too much radial movement.

you can deal with the 90 degree turns by placing the censors onto the "center of rotation" (bc tank steering)

To solve the sketchy 90° turning you should put the sensors along the same axis as the center of rotation, which in this case would be around the center of the creation.

You can probably fix the problem where both sensors detect the black line on the 90-degree corners by saying that if one of them detects the line, block the other one from trying to turn when it detects it too and continue turning. I haven't used logic in Scrap Mechanic like this, but it should be possible.

I wonder if instead of tank steering spinning the truck in place, you could just brake one side to swing the truck around those 90° turns, considering where the sensors are. Might operate a bit smoother without all the jitter.

The black line is 2 blocks wide. I believe they design it to be tracked. This may solve the cornering issues. You could also track outside for white as a secondary precaution just incase you lose the black line

I believe the simplest solution for 90 ° turns is to have a short wheelbase, and you had it, but the sensors for the black line should be more centered than the vehicle body, i.e. the center would be the perfect place

I really enjoy that serie on self driving.... I wish I had the game to speedrun the levels. You guys could compete on a couple levels see the design that would come of it... Design idea, why not turn the car around instead of going backwards so you dont have to hook reversing...maybe using a well time timer on tank steering?

Something that you could do is have a piston that activates and extends a certain sensor forward from the vehicle when the other sensor is active.

For the last challenge you left off on maybe you could try putting the sensors that follow the black line in the center of your vehicle as like a 2x2 or 2x1? when the left one stops detecting black it turns off the right wheels to turn right and when right sensor stops detecting black it turns off left wheels to to turn left so that it always stays on top of the black line that way it shouldn't stutter much on the cross sections because it only moves while detecting black instead of only moving when not detecting black?

How I solved the 90s. Left and right sensor into an additional and gate, which connects to xor gates on the backwards engines. Essentially makes the bot drive forward until 1 sensor is off the black.
