I believe the challenge sensors are what are being used for the glowbug capsules. They are capable of ignoring blocks but detecting entities, and the capsules you place the glowbugs in are the same size as the sensors.

I think w/ multiple hammers you can kill 1 tapebot if you switch hammers after each hit. It resets the animation. This works w/ only one hammer, but imo this is why they gave you 3 of them
