If it's any consolation, our eldest son was also diagnosed with a bilateral profound hearing loss at 20 months. He had a cochlear implant aged 4 & is now in his final year of a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering (aged 22 yrs). We chatted on the phone this week and he only asked me once to repeat myself. His brother (now aged 20) had an implant aged 5 and is going on a uni exchange to Sydney next week. There was no neonatal screening in the 90's; it's all very different now! Good luck !

Penny Evennett Awesome outcome.. This is very inspiring.. My nephew was diagnosed today with the bilateral, profound hearing loss, and I was trying to picture his future. 😊 the outlook is good.

I was 25, yes 25 when my congenital hearing loss was diagnosed. I adapted for years with left side hearing loss and struggled along on my own for years. It impacted me in so many ways in my day to day life but I was just labelled as quiet or antisocial because I couldn't join in socially. I am so glad that there is newborn screening now, so that no child now will have to go through what I have been through alone.

My son was 3 1/2 years old when we found out he had a moderate hearing loss. After taking him for the fifth time to the doctors to be told again nothing wrong I didn't back down and we got diagnosis
