Exactly. And often times it can also mean it's actually healthier for the fish! Less feeding = less water changes, possibly less algae and healthier fish! That's one for sure. Another could be to setup a food web!

Look at how those rainbow fish. They really did color up. Rummy nose tetras-always perfect! Good recipe. It dovetails with Cory’s mantra about wait-give-your-change-time before trying the next thing.

I have started using spot lights which are full spectrum plant lights on my aquariums. I think this looks more natural and mysterious. The fish seem to be more comfortable with shadows to swim in when they want to also. My plants have adjusted to this situation, and it does cut down on algae growth if it is a problem.

Out of the 10 tanks that I have my 40 gallon is the best, somehow I found the perfect balance with no gravel vac, no water changes and only top off once a week or so. I believe is because of all my pothos, peace lily and lucky bamboo growing out the tank with massive roots providing really good natural filtration. All the fish look very healthy.

Thanks for the video! Its wild how much everything works together! Its such a draw back that most microbiology research focuses on a single organism at a time. Its always a treat when you see people looking into the interactions of microorganisms in co-cultures or even multi-cultures.

Lots of good info there thanks. Apart from my large cichlid tank, I'm working on heavily planting all other tanks including terrestrial plants. My longest running tank, although negligible nitrates and could probably run forever without a WC is a green hair algae factory. I think part of the cause is it used to have C02, so plants were growing faster and taking up most of the nutrients. Now taken away for a while it has given room for the algae to grow. I'll try your tip first off and drastically reduce the lighting. None of the plants have high tech requirements in any case so nothing to lose.

Is visible algae bad? I have it only covering my driftwood and it adds a lot more green and looks natural to me and the fish like to eat it. Glass and water always clear. But since you mentioned the cyano bacteria, I had it on my dwarf sag specifically like you, and it started to spread like crazy and picking it out seemed to make it spread faster, it all came back in a day, so I had no choice but to use the blue green slime remover and it's been gone for a few weeks now :D

just removing the top layer of lose mulm is no big deal, but if I went in and "gravel vacced" the whole substrate it would def. not be great.... *doesn't always mean something bad will happen though

This is what I am trying to accomplish with my 20g tall tank. Something that just keeps itself going without really messing around it, and let the fish be a part of the room. Tank is still being cycled, but after a year I’m hoping that the tank becomes hands free.

I am wondering if a non planted tank would be less maintenance. That’s what i had yrs. ago. Had an under gravel filter. Would do 20% water changes once every month or two and some gravel vac. No algae either. Had a fluorescent tube light. The gravel was about 1 1/2 inches, so no anaerobic issues i am sure. This was the 1960s. Guppy breeds were stronger, probably. Never knew to check water parameters. I tried again in 1980s and was a disaster. Want to try again. Want to try you magic guppy water. I have a pH of 6.5 to 7 with gh of 2 and kh 2. This time a HOB filter.

When I was a kid I had a similar setup as you. I went with a planted tank when I restarted a tank. I don't think it is much of a difference. Even a low tech tank needs to be babies as it matures, so imo it's really not much of a difference and we'll worth the effort for live plants if you really want them as I did. However, there is nothing wrong with less stuff if it is how you want to go.
