We just tried the oil modified poly and wow. What the hell we were wasting time with the full on poly. We were getting plaugued with dust or some kind of cross contamination with the oil. First coat took a while to fill in. The second coat was dry so quick. Since it dried so fast sanding was quick. We had to really scrub with oil. Something we half assed looked awesome . Just going to see if we can do this with a earlex or try brushing it. I don't think it's possible to brush and keep it consistent . It requires a thin coat which might be impossible with brushing and maintaining mini production of a ton of moulding without taking all day

Glad it works for you! The main reason I use it is for the dry time. I can get 3 coats in a day vs 8+ hours per coat with oil 🤷🏼‍♂️ and the water based is plenty durable for my needs. I personally spray everything because of the quantity I do but I’ve had decent luck brushing it on small items

I'ma try spraying tomorrow the oil modified tomorrow. . But wow. I can't believe how good the finish is with a foam brush like you did. Have you tried it with an earlex machine before ? I hope it's powerful enough.

I like your spray finishing set-up Jef. Here's a few comments to help your audience out: 1. get into the habit of always straining finishes as you pour them into your gun cup (or reservoir) - even if there's a built-in strainer (PPS, for instance) - to filter out any impurities or loose dried fleck of finish which could spoil your finish. 2. if you're spraying a waterborne finish NEVER use a tack cloth, as they contain oil-based solvents which will cause fish eyes and affect the bonding of the next coat. 3. raising the piece you're spraying at least 15cm (6") above your spray table will limit finish bounce-back and make it easier to get your hands underneath the piece to flip it over. 4. until you're as experienced as Jef or Jess and can visually check as you go along, use a wet film gauge to confirm the thickness of the coat you're spraying. As a general rule of thumb, most finish manufacturers suggest each coat be between 3 and 5 mils (.003" - .005") in thickness... but it's always a good idea to check what the manufacturer states on their website. 5. keep your hose from kinking (especially important where it connects to the turbine), as that may cause overheating of your turbine and result in premature motor failure. That's why the manufacturer suggests placing the turbine on the floor.

I thought the PPS system already has a built in filter so you never have to filter it before putting it into the cup. It's designed that way to save you the step of pre-filtering.

However, I have continued the practice of pre-straining any finish that goes into my spray system's cup or pressure pot reservoir because that was what we did when I first got into spraying over 30 years ago. It is another step which takes me less than a minute to do and gives me peace of mind that I will never have to contend with a clogged PPS strainer cap. And they can become clogged, especially if you're using waterbased finishes such as I do most of the time.

You don’t have to filter it with the pps system just and extra step to be safe but you are correct it does have a built in filter and you technically don’t have to filter it at all just pour it in. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Hey Jeff. Thank you so much for the video man! It was hugely informative. I started my Etsy shop back in April and it’s been doing really well(DairyBarnWoodworking). One thing I’ve been struggling with is spraying finish(I prefer Lacquer). I just have a cheap HVLP connected to a compressor that’s too small. I’ve built a small 10’x12’ dedicated spray booth in my wood shop. I will be getting an HVLP setup like the Fuji Semi Pro 2 and wondering about overspray? Will I need a dedicated exhaust fan? Or will opening the window be enough? Possibly putting a fan in the window with filter? I think I would be spraying poly, lacquer and latex paint. Thank you for your help.

I prefer the gravity fed guns. If you use a pressure pot you can even spray with the gun upside down it will have constant pressure

I would start with a 1.0 cap and needle and if it feels like it’s not pushing out enough material hope upto a 1.3 needle. Those two are all you need for everything but like paint and thicker materials

I have not but I believe it’s a smaller system. Which won’t matter much if you mostly spray top coats then it’s plenty. If you plan to spray a ton of paint I’d probably lean towards one of the larger models.

Great video. On the PPS system, those liners crinkling up were always a problem until I realized you can suck the air out of the cup and they will straighten out. This makes storing or emptying partially filled liners much easier. No risk of getting any paint in your mouth. What air cap set were you using?

Hey! Depends on the wood whether I use conditioner or not. And yes I do wipe the stain. GF makes stain you can spray on and don’t have to wipe but requires a special touch to get nice even color

I've started using the oil modified poly after watching this video. I usually spray outside with a Fuji Q5 and get great results, but now that it's gotten colder, I've moved into my garage and I keep getting an orange peel like effect as I spray. I'm thinking it's temp/humidity related (as I've already checked the usual causes of orange peel) since temp/humidity are the only variables that have changed. Have you ever had an issue like this? What, if anything do you do in the winter months for climate control in your spray room? Thanks

Our shop is climate controlled. But I did have issues with lacquer in the past. I added extender to product so it wouldn’t dry as fast in the low humidity. I know general finishes makes a water based dry time extender which is what I used with the lacquer. I haven’t had the issue with oil modified but it sounds like a similar issue.

I also run a small heater in the finishing room as it gets super cold here. I’ll also start running a humidifier around this time as the humidity falls off a cliff lol I try and keep the temps around 65-70 and humidity at around 40-50.

You ever spray precat white lacquer (for like cabinets). Friend wants me to build some built ins for them. I built my own and sprayed them with a white latex using a Graco airless. I ended up with a really good finish but dang it was hard and there was a huge learning curve. I’ve been told spraying lacquer is much much easier. I’m thinking of investing in a 4 stage Fuji so I can do this. Thoughts? (Thanks for the video - it was great)

For topcoats a Fuji with a turbine will be waaay more efficient. Also was it a water based product? I sprayed water based pre cat for about a year and eventually switched back to poly because the lacquer was more sensitive than poly and had a few small issues I didn’t have with poly

@@TwoMooseDesign I’ve never sprayed lacquer or poly because I only have a handheld graco airless. On my cabinets I sprayed SW ProEnamel white paint. I actually got a great finish but it was a HUGE pain. I want something more fool proof, which is why I thought a white precat lacquer would be good. You think a white poly would be even better? I thought lacquer because of the really fast drying times. Then again I don’t know much about it. I’m a novice at spraying. I just want a super smooth white finish that’s way easier than spraying the white ProEnamel paint. I should also note that I want a really durable finish as well. Built ins will be in a house with two little boys. Lol

Yep a board with screws in it. I beat down the points a tiny bit, and for the most part they are wet. They sit for a minute or two then I flip them. If your careful you don’t see any marks.

Hey! I don’t know anything about your set up or that finish but typically a bunch of bubbles is too much air. So I would use a smaller tip or try to use less air flow. You could also try an extender which will slow the curing process and give it more time to level out and pop bubbles.

Stockbilt I have a explosion proof exhaust fan and then just crack a window and it removes it all pretty quick.

Really good video. Looking for my first sprayer, hobbyist woodworker, I'm between the Wagner Control Pro 130 and the Fuji Semi Pro 2. I know the Fuji is better but its twice the price.

I’d say it depends on what you plan on spraying most. The wager appears to be an airless sprayer which has the ability to spray thicker paints and the semi pro 2 might struggle a little with thick latex paints. If you plan on spraying mostly top coats like poly I’d definitely go with the Fuji. I personally don’t know anything about the Wagner I just Google it 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’m not sure how well it will lay down poly and what not since it’s designed to paint houses essentially 😬 either way you’ll love having a sprayer!

@@TwoMooseDesign Gotcha. Basically just sick of rolling paint and cleaning brushes. Want to be able to throw a coat of primer, paint, or topcoat onto whatever project I need some paint on, cabinet, shelf, wall, etc. Would be nice to be able to touch up the exterior white sealer on the concrete block foundation and that stuff is super thick.

Thanks! I apply 3 coats and allowing them to dry per the finish manufacturers instructions. So for me it’s about 3 hours between coats. I do not do anything after the last coat I will occasionally hit them with like 320 by hand very lightly if I have a few specks in the finish. Also before I ship them I wipe them down with a wood cleaner/wax to make sure they are dust free!

Great intro for new sprayers! This was so beneficial! Like your tips and tricks and the upgrades! It looks like you use Brad nails to hold the handles/sides of the tray together. Does that seem to have any issues with the spray poly?

The nails are filled and thee sides are glued on. In haven’t had any issues over the past few years. And thanks! I appreciate it 😁

I guess the Fuji doesn’t produce a lot of over spray? With my cheap compressor set up I would have to mask off the side I wasn’t spraying....

New subscriber here, first thanks for the great video! 🍻🍻 I'm looking to getting into hvlp spraying as of now I do new interior home finish (the trim work, laying the flooring when needed and all the interior painting) but have a fair amount of requests for other odds n ends and cabinet painting so I've been researching different hvlp spraying units. As of now I'm leaning towards a T75G Q5. I have a Graco airless for the work I do now, but haven't researched their hvlp sprayers as of yet, any info or comparisons you may have will be much appreciated! Also any extra pointers or tips for someone just getting into hvlp spraying are appreciated too of course. Thanks again for the informative video and anytime you may have for input! Again...👍👍🍻

The q5 is a great option! We have the graco 9.5 pro contractor as well they are both very similar. The main difference is the graco has an auto on/off feature which the Fuji does not.
