If you had a softmodded PSP this was the reality rather than the dream. Games like GTA Vice City Stories, Star Wars Battefront II, Force Unleashed, God of War, Tekken 5, and Metal Gear Solid on the go installed right on the system, a variety of emulators including GBA to play Pokemon, almost perfect PS1 game emulation, multimedia play and internet browsing before smartphones were common, and even connecting it to the TV via analog cable.

Yeah, I joined Steam in 2019 (Very new to PC gaming, although I'm pretty tech savvy) and I still have at least 5-10 games that work perfectly on Deck, and I'd see myself consistently playing on it. So basically you get AT LEAST 3-5 games for free to play on your Deck if you've been a PC gamer for any significant amount of time, and that's the biggest draw for me, is that with something like the PS5, you won't be spending $400-$500, you'll be spending that amount plus a couple games and any needed accessories. With the Deck, you already have the games, so it's only as much as the model you selected.

It's nice that Valve is making the Decks to order, and send it to customers on a quarterly basis during these hard times, as opposed to making a predetermined batch and sell out everywhere. Now if only Sony and Microsoft could temporarily adopt that kind of practice
@sly2792004

mean they all constantly making them. valve isn't making them to order they making as many as they can and shipping them out as they arrive. sony does same just shipping them to stores every week or two weeks. the difference is valve doesn't have long existing contracts with retail stores. valve doesn't need to sell games in stores. if sony or microsoft said we only going sell our consoles on our sites, stores would say oh well then we not going sell your games and accessories. so its down to stores to control the inventory.

Looking at the steam controller, steam link, steam machines etc, it is obvious that those were only experiments. Maby they work, maby not. Now we know they did not work. The steam deck however, makes valves ambitions very clear. To become a gaming platform, not just a store. All other hardware products so far contributed to the steam deck. Each of them was just a cool gimmick with a niche usecase. But the steam deck, aims to be a complete package. A full experience. Sure, it isn't there yet, but looking at their efforts, it seems that they will succeed with that goal until the next steam deck arrives. And I am sure there will be one. Especially considering the steam deck will not sell thousands of times, but millions of times in it's life cycle.

the Steam machines were a failure because it was left to partners instead of valve and Proton didn't exist. The Steam controller wasn't perfect, but it did its job well enough. I'm loving it! I will say the screen itself on the Switch oled does look a bit better, not a huge surprise since that's oled, but this definitely looks better than the base switch and has better brightness. And playing with it is SUPER comfortable, I have played several hours in a row with no hand cramping, which isn't something I can do with the Switch in portable mode. Load times are also really good too, even with the 512gb Samsung microsd I bought from Amazon for $60, definitely noticeably better than the last gen consoles or Switch. Also really dig the TouchPad, the haptics are excellent and I find myself sometimes using that instead of the analog stick without thinking about it. And don't be too discouraged about the game compatibility, most of the games I tried that were listed as untested actually worked well, such as Kingdom Come Deliverance, which works better than the base last gen consoles and much better load times. I'll have to give Deathloop a spin since that's a notable game that's not on last gen consoles but can play on this.

A lot of people talking about waiting for a Steam Deck 2 in the comments, but we have no idea when that would come out. The current Deck has to fulfil its pre-orders first, expand into other countries (Japan and Australia have been mentioned, but there could be more) and maybe - but don't bank on it - be available in retail stores in some countries. Valve would also want to wait for a significant improvement in the APU (possibly 2 gens' worth, which would be 3 years) to justify a new Deck model (this could drive a 1080p 8" OLED VRR display - with no or thin bezels - for example). What would happen though is that the $399 entry price point would be gone - it would probably start at $599 I reckon. So to conclude - no follow-up model for multiple years and no $399 model, so no point in waiting...pre-order that $399 model now...

@Nuke Russia no its just lookin at say nintendo. lets take a look at their consoles, all of their online stores are shutting down 1 by 1 making it so you just cant download digital games any more, or even updates or the dlc for the physical ones. happened with the wii, and now the wii u n 3ds. switch could be within the next 5-10 years who knows. but with the steam deck as long as games are available to play on a pc, you can get it and play it on the deck, even if steam were to somehow shut down some day

What's neat is how open this thing is. Valve put out the CAD files for it, and now you could print out your own custom panel for it if you want something else on the back. The internal storage is an M.2 drive so it should be easy to just upgrade that on your own if you want to. As far as Emulation goes, EmuDeck is something you need to look into. Again the community is on top of it. Oh, and if you haven't checked out Session lately, it's worth a look. I feel that game has surpassed Skater XL.

As much as I love it I'm already having some minor issues with the left analog stick. When I played Hades sometime Zagreus would move left longer than my press. I was able to fix it some in deadzone testing screen on the Deck. It often gets worse when I put the Deck to sleep and wake it up. The stick feels stiff or rigid until I reset the Deck. I'm keeping the unit in the case when not in use and not doing anything crazy like placing it face down. It is playable as is, but if it gets any worse I will contact Valve support.

John - in you’re next video I’d love you to cover the ergonomics of the steam deck as a portable system. The position of the D-Pad and the XYAB buttons are of particular interest. I’m on the older side now and my hands ache with the unergonomic grips and button positions on my switch when I use it portably. The XYAB looks very oddly positioned on the deck. The B even wraps around the edge of the system a bit what what I can see in your video. For games that require only a left control stick my perception is I wouldn’t get on with it without using a controller; but I can’t imagine holding a controller with the steam deck on top of it in a frame more than 5 seconds given its size. Whether it fundamentally works as a device for on the go would make or break it for me personally. Would love to know your thoughts.

Spawn is late to the party, dude. Go ask the hundreds of other people who have had their Decks for weeks now. I for example, I am in my 30s, I am 6'4" tall, the button placements have not been an issue in my opinion. If anything I find the shoulder buttons a bit awkward to reach for some reason, but other than that I can play my Deck for hours and my hands do not ache like with the regular Switch. I received my deck exactly a week ago to the day, if not to the hour. So far, I've only turned on my PC for excel, college, and that one time the WiFi on the deck was struggling. The handheld offers me so much flexibility in how I approach games. I generally find that I don't want to sit down anymore and play for an hour, or sometimes 2-3 to get into a game. The deck lets me hop into a game more seamlessly than on PC, so I don't feel as bad for playing just one mission of 10 minutes before putting the deck down in sleep mode and do the dishes. I love that I can pick up the deck and continue where I left off just like that. And if I don't feel like playing games, I can watch my shows on it or use it as a speaker when I'm doing housework.

Some folks talking about the Steam Deck vs Switch size comparisons-- if you detach the controllers, the Switch tablet is just about 20% taller and longer than an average smartphone. Store the controllers elsewhere. That's the size advantage. However, portability isn't that big a deal, because the Steam Deck isn't meant to substitute a Switch, it's meant to substitute whichever computer you play Steam on at home. And it's definitely way more handy in that sense than a laptop or desktop.
@kundlas100
@kundlas100 2 жыл бұрын
Eh, I wouldn’t say substitute your PC as much as supplement it. Personally have a Razer Blade, and for as convenient as that is, being able to have a Souls Game or FFXV on standby on a dedicated device is ultra helpful. But I’ll also be majorly missing out on graphics at the cost of performance. Maybe not the biggest issue in some games like FFXV, but in something like Spyro which needs that power to bring in huge chunks of its important details, it’s a big deal. It’s def convenient, especially if you don’t want to shell out for a high-end gaming laptop, but it’s not for everyone.

For the battery life, if you have the steam deck uncapped and it's under 60 fps it is essentially working full force and you will get ~90 minutes to 2 hours of battery with it at full power. If you want more battery life you'll have to set game settings in a way that there is overhead; 30 fps cap will help the use less power and have more battery life, lowering settings so it goes above 60 also improves battery life, and working in FSR+540p also helps. You should be able to squeeze about 3 hours in most AAA games on medium settings. This does require a lot of tinkering, so I hope there is a way to share game settings in the future for other Deck users in order to make it more accessible to non-PC users since right now you have to be good at tinkering with settings to get a better battery life and experience. You're essentially doing the job devs would be doing when they port games to switch when you mess with settings which is the big difference between a closed environment like the switch and an open environment like the steam deck.

That's really helpful information people will need to have. I don't know most PC gamers put much thought into performance per watt, power & thermals. Some definitely do. But I think PC gamers who were mobile already, specifically those familiar with laptops, will have a head start on fine tuning the Steam Deck. Battery life is a consideration, but I personally liked total silence and low temperature gaming. Conventional wisdom says you either run hot or you run loud fans.. but you can get both with proper settings, software management, if possible, research into CPU and GPU efficiency. I used to spend hours looking at the best benchmarks within a tight TDP prior to buying a computer. (I'll also say I will not tolerate a gaming PC getting winded running a web browser. It sucks nearly all PCs act that way) We can assume Valve did the heavy lifting there, laptops are pretty hit and miss. But it's very nice they've put that performance monitor overlay in there. I'll be curious if they chose to streamline some settings ala the Nintendo Switch, and just leave the game's built in settings options, or if there's more details available to those that want them. Single example.. types of anti-aliasing. Some games use their own, others have none on by default, other times a user might want to use a different type. Most people buy a Switch for not having to worry, fiddle with or even understand that stuff. I have one and I enjoy it. But I'd love to see if Valve decides to lean towards the Switch, towards PC optionality, or manage to straddle the two. I think we can say Nintendo has straddled the mobile vs home theater world pretty well. As for me, I can't seem to keep up with all the tech anymore. In a world where the Switch exists, and I have a PS5. I do home theater for both, but only the Switch can do more than that. My PCs don't see much use right now. Pricing out a desktop setup, I feel like I've been in stasis 20 years and suffered the inflation of 50 years. But they fill a niche nothing else can. I prefer my 15-17 inch laptops to other form factors, even on a table. They don't travel, but technically could. I've heard for over a decade laptop PCs were not really PCs because they aren't powerful, they aren't bleeding edge, bursting with frame and pixels like nothing else can. So it is strange that there's suddenly interest in PC gaming getting away from the desks and high res monitors. There's theories, I'm sure. I've even heard "Breath of the Wild" changed everything, changed all perception. I remember shortly before launch, people thought Skyrim on the go was the game changer. People forgot that so fast after seeing what Nintendo could do. I'm happy to see a machine like the Steam Deck, but it will be very interesting to see how the spec-obsessed PC community responds to it over time.

@@warlockboyburns just no. You already can play all Switch games on Steam Deck better than on Switch

@@deepfakestudio7776 all? can you proof it? I don't think emulator can gaurantee playable state on all games. Also not all of them are downloadable on launch date.

@@j.dviant I'm serious they're using an nvidia chip that's in smart cars and it's twice as powerful as the steam deck. Not that it's needed on a 7" screen

im all about portable gaming as the future. Switch was truly the OG for a well developed system. I may grab a steam deck to have access to a massive library now

Steam Deck is already amazing but its future is even brighter. Imagine a smaller truly portable form factor Deck with better battery life and an HDR OLED screen. It should be possible when inevitably RDNA 2 APU is manufactured in a smaller node.

I got mine this week as well and am incredibly impressed. The system is very well designed and the few small issues it has like the loud fans are easily outweighed by the fact that you can play a large (and ever-growing) chunk of PC games on the go without having to make lots of sacrifices. Also emulation is on another level on this thing, I'm really looking forward to you getting to try it out. Go wild with that new toy and have some fun!
