My steering wheel SUCKS, is it do-over? 1929 Model A Ford Roadster

My 1929 Ford Model A may or may not have an original steering wheel, however it once was a red tone, it now looks brownish, it also has a lot of deep cracks all over, so to keep bad things from possibly happening while driving, like my steering wheel suddenly breaking while driving, we decided to get a brand new correct era steering wheel.
Once opened, I learned there was instructions on finish work needing to be done.
In todays video I’ll show you how to finish the new steering wheel so it looks like a pro did it!

I though I spotted a Johnson transmitter on the shelf, hmmm. I like Mook too. Studebaker steering wheel is starting to get some cracks in it. Well, 64 years old, it should !! Good job, one piece at a time.

I see nothing wrong with pretend driving. When I was a little boy my father's buddy had a '29 roadster pick up. I played in it all the time. That started the Model A bug I think. Red wheels are cool , but I find hard to keep clean. Black was a good choice. Looking forward to the 2 tooth install video.

I know that thin, sharp edge as "flash". I remember it from my model car building days when the small, plastic pieces would have flash on their edges.

You and Roadie deserve a 2 tooth steering box. It will be fun to watch you guys do that. I know Bob did a video a few years back. But it would be great to see it done again with you and Paul. I truly enjoy watching them. 😊

Hi, is the center of the wheel original with new bonding on the rim or is the whole steering wheel new? I really enjoy the work you and Paul do. Fun and informative.

The whole steering wheel is new, the company has 2 different molds that are from original Model A steering wheels, this is a great way to have a period correct steering wheel, but new….hard to find a good original steering wheel that isn’t being used lol

No matter what the age, we are still kids at heart. Nice steering wheel. Just curious, but if you coat the whole thing in Polyurethane after the edge trimming. All would be protected & have a nice shiny smooth wheel. Those are very large diameter steering wheels. Cool video.

I could use a new steering wheel as well for my 1930 Roadster. My steering wheel has some cracks and it looks like a steering knob was severely tightened on it for a long time as well. I have done a lot of business with Mike's Afordable, super nice folks. Even been to their place of business a couple of times.

Way back when JFK was president I started building model cars and quickly learned a little trick for removing the casting flash without hurting the bodies . Don't hold your knife laying down like you did as it allows the blade to dig in . Instead , hold the blade at a 90 degree angle to your work and use it to scrape away the flashing , much like you were doing with your file . Much easier than having to explain that you cut yourself with a knife .

Gotta love Paul’s radio voice 😂. Would the original steering wheel be repairable? I’ve seen others repair steering wheels with epoxy (similar to our friend JB Weld) and even fiberglass putty. Great video; thank you!

Lol, Paul is fun! I suppose it’s possible to put a product on to fill in cracks and make look smooth, but I don’t know just how deep down those cracks go, so to me, safety first 😁 Maybe once I take the original steering wheel off and examine it closely and it seems like they are more of just a surface crack then maybe I’ll refinish it and restore it and do something nice with it for another Model A…we’ll see 🥰 have an awesome week!

@@Modeltshinn What they do is cut through the cracks and make them deeper and wider and then fill with the product and finish. Seems to work; which is great on very rare steering wheels for which you can’t get reproductions. You have a great week as well!

It is getting to be rodent time again. What do you all think of grated original Irish Spring soap in a delicate laundry bag to deter them from making a winter home in the upholstery of a Model A? Seemed to work last winter for me.

Hi! Personally, I’m not sure if I’m going to keep the same color scheme in the future, I’m honestly thinking of painting it back to an original color for it’s time, so I think black will go better with any color and my interior seat and shifter, etc are black, I think it will be nice 🥰
