Depends on the situation. Why my father was on his deathbed I was the only one of his children that didn't come. We had a huge blow up three years earlier. It was really bad. The last thing I ever told him is you will never see or speak to me again in his lifetime and when you die you better put an armed guard by your grave site because every time I drive by it I would make sure to use it as a urinal. He begged my to see him before he kicked the bucket. My mother (His ex wife by this time) called me begging me to come to the hospital. I told her that old bastatd died three years ago as far as I was concerned. I don't regret it at all. BTW I haven't used his grave site as a urinal. But he don't know that. 😉

The funny thing is, at the end when Sara blew up... I just had the thought: "All those years we spent together, all those years of sacrifice, and love, and attention... I called you my wife... And then I stepped out and gave my love to another woman. And now, when I come back and call you my wife, it feels hollow, doesn't it...? You feel betrayed, you feel angry... And you are right, but I want you to consider something. Take that story, but change just a few words. All those years, all that love and sacrifice, Emma called me her father, and then on one of the most important days of her life, she gave that honor to someone else... Take that pain you feel right now, and understand that it is not so different from the pain that I felt. Oh, wait, there is one difference. Imagine that instead of Emma supporting you, she supported me. Because when Emma 'cheated on me with her other dad', you sided with her. She decided I wasn't worthy to be her father, but rather was only a tool to be used when it was convenient and then ignored the rest of the time. And when I was hurt by the betrayal, YOU decided that me not accepting the pain made me unworthy to be your husband. That pain you feel right now? I have lived with that for two years, but I got it from both of you. And you are mad at me for stepping out on the marriage? You stepped out on it two years ago and never came back. I didn't destroy the marriage, I just accepted what you already decided, and I have finally started moving on."

Sara and Emma are entitled to the point of oblivion. Both of them don’t want to understand because that would be admitting they were wrong. Yes he had an affair but they both pushed for it. Emma by whining to her mother about poverty and Sara whining to op about him needing to step it up. Why didn’t Sara work and help her daughter? Op supported them in every way. Even paid for her education. He actually took the responsibility off of Mark’s back. Mark was living the life and laughing through his brew. He doesn’t say who paid for the wedding but those 2 had sucked him for everything and the moment he said no, it was game over. Sara has no business being angry, she is essentially a user that didn’t have to walk the streets thanks to op and the daughter got a college education, why isn’t she holding up the fort? Cause it was easier to ask daddy

You shouldn't feel guilty. Clearly, your relationship with your wife was dependent upon trying to replace her daughter's father. Now that you realize that your relationship was based on that, and the fact that you are not willing to be the "replacement dad" to fix everything, regardless of how you are treated. She doesn't see you the same way. Bare in mind that I don't believe that your wife consciously did this. It was more of an instinctual response to why she married you. Also not to mention that she never acknowledged your feelings on how you felt and/or were treated. Although it's obvious that your stepdaughter figured it out after you refused the first time. Although she truly didn't understand how bad she messed up until after meeting you at the park. I will admit that I could actually tell that you and your wife were doomed after you said how she reacted when you refused to help. So you really shouldn't feel guilty. At least for moving on that is, however I believe that you should have waited until you had separated first, however in your mindset I can understand.

Get a lawyer and end this clown show you were only there to pay for their way and when you didn’t give them everything they wanted when they wanted it you became persona non grata. When a relationship is over, it’s over in the relationship before you cheat.

Typical female reaction. Blaming the man for moving on from a toxic relationship. Had it been with someone else and not the best friend, you would have found an other reason to blame him. It's in every woman's nature to blame all men for their problems and their bad decisions because it's also in a woman's nature to not accept responsibility for her actions. The toxic wife blaming him for a marriage she destroyed, proves what I just wrote and the fact that you agree with the toxic wife also proves my point !

ESH. I wouldn’t want to be friends with a single character in this story. I was with OP (mostly sorta) until he cheated. However, he had a sense of entitlement regarding the wedding that was beyond normal - he should have laid out expectations and understood the stepdaughter’s expectations as well before wedding planning began so there were no hurt feelings. He could have withheld money then and decided whether or not he’d attend rather than grow such resentment. He’s not wrong to feel hurt, but there were steps he could have taken to minimize the outcome and is not blameless. Another situation that proves “assume” makes an a$$ out of everyone.
