I speak from experience. My grandfather was just cruel. When you are a child it hurts so bad like they rip your soul out of you and you don't even know what you did wrong. You keep trying because you want to be expected like your cousins. When I was around 15 I was only resentful and stopped trying. So it has not so much to do with forgiveness but more that you want to be treated the same way as everyone else because you want to belong. With parents it is different. Parents you forgive unless they treat you the same way and totally different than your siblings. I'm almost 70 but never got an answer what was so wrong with me.

I’m so sorry those things happened. I’m the middle child and only girl. I was told that college would be paid for my brothers but, I was to take care of my parents for the rest of their lives. When I heard that, I left, got 2 Masters Degrees and never looked back. They reached out when I had my son but, I allowed holidays only, And only if myself or my husband was there.

When i went over wirh children from a friend of his, he send me home because i did not belong he said. One time he bought ice cream for everyone except for me. Its not necessarily kneeling, its getting down to the childs level to make them feel comfortable. Ryan was already nervous so getting down to his level would have made him feel less threatened. Even so regardless of her problems Martha behaved abominably to little Ryan.

Grandma should have yanked her granddaughter out of private school, stopped paying for piano lessons and stopped buying expensive gifts if her finances were so critical. My Mom did something similar to my oldest son when he was 5 - we dealt with it and I thought it was water under the bridge. He is now 35 (Grandma has passed) - at a recent family gathering we were reminiscing - he brought it up - he remembered word for word and he was still upset. Kids don't forget slights like that - they know if they're treated differently. Moral: Think before you open your mouth and blat something out - kids actually have very long memories!
