Your story is so inspiring. I am 16 years old and unable to lease or purchase my own horse. I can only ride twice a month and sometimes I get a little envious of other people at my barn who ride almost every day. But then I have to remember to focus on what I already have, VS what others have or what I don't have. Hearing your story gives me hope that in the future, I can really reach the level of competitiveness that I dream of.

Try to offer your services at the barn, grooming, lunging, plaiting etc. It will give you milage and maybe opportunities to ride more. Scribing is fantastic as you learn so much sitting at C. Often pays a little bit as well.

@@sabinelloyd8532 Yeah, I definently try to! I'm a working student at my barn, so that helps me afford some of my lessons, but I also go to a very small barn and there aren't many paid opportunities. Whenever I offer to come in and lunge, braid/plait, etc, it's always a volunteer job. Of course, that helps too, but I've got a helpful amount of experience, so now I just need some money to keep it up, if that makes sense

I’m 35 and finally can afford weekly lessons. I had ridden for a couple small stints in high school and college using what I could with babysitting money. What I’m learning is to enjoy what you have and challenge yourself to grow in your own goals. Just enjoy the ride.

I just loved this video Amelia. I worked also as a kid/teen for lessons and eventually got my first job at an ice cream shop to pay for a lease. Thank you so much for sharing your story and talking about how we all should ride the horse we have. Taking the elitism out of dressage will make it more accessible for all and there’s nothing better than that!

Hi Amelia! Thank you so much for sharing your inspiring story and for being so generous with sharing your time, insights, experience and talent by creating the videos in your KZbin channel. While this is the first time I am ever making a comment on any of your KZbin videos, please know that I have very much enjoyed watching your videos and genuinely appreciate them. I only get to ride once a week at the most so your videos provide me with additional visuals, lessons and tips for how to improve my riding. People like you have made the planet a better place. More power to you!

Your time, effort, and expertise are invaluable. I will say that good ground manners in any riding discipline are essential. It is the foundation for all training that follows. I had pony when I was young, bought for $35. His name was Rowdy and he was a terror. He had every vice any equid could possibly have: biting, kicking, bucking. He tore my jacket pocket looking for treats that I did not have. He once bucked me off and then stood on my back with his front feet before I could get up. I was about 8 or 9 and when we had to sell him a year later, he was a reformed character. This was many years ago and I thank that little brat for coming into my life. He taught me a lot. I must add that he wasn't a mean pony, he was spoiled by his previous owners and they essentially taught him bad manners.

I was fortunate to meet my mentor at the time I started riding. At the very least he was equal to Buck Brannaman and good friends with Buck. So riding and working with horses in a similar manner to Buck is all I know. I guess my riding discipline is to get along with my horses and try to make them a winner. I started to follow you because I think you operate the same way. People start shaking money at you, there is always strings attached and that may mean they want you to compromise on your horsemanship. I appreciate your videos and how you go about working with your horses. Thank you for sharing your story.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. It's funny how we perceive people before knowing them. I had you visioned as growing up in a wealthy environment and having access to the best of horses. I am a struggling rider, can't afford my own horse, working my butt off to pay for the best of lessons just to be able to live my passion of dressage. Thank you and God bless you for all the help you are providing for people like me ❤🐎

I am VERY impressed with the professionalism, the way/format in which you have put the lessons, videos, talks together. I would have thought you had majored in business, marketing and advertising given how well done your program is!! My father was in advertising so I tend to notice those types of skills. Well done! You are amazing and kind person. I truly relate as I was that kid while in 4H. I I borrowed $150 from our 4H group to get my first horse. I did babysitting and paid $10 a month until the loan was paid. Didn't fit in with the other kids but my horse was world and saved my life bc my world at home was terrible. Anyway thank you for sharing and your generosity bc I am one of those who can't afford the lessons or fancy trained horses. My rescued OTTB was a challenge to me as I'm sure I was to him but in our years together, learning as much as I can and trying, we have become one. Again from the bottom of my heart thank you.

Inspiring story - thank you - as someone who aspires to be a good rider, but has to content myself with a much loved but problem horse, and coming back to riding as an adult my skills don’t develop as quickly as I’d like, we don’t have all the money in the world, or access to top trainers, or $100,000 horses... we will never set the dressage world on fire, everything has been hard fought and won, but small wins keep us inspired and persistent... when things are hard, my question to myself is always “do you love the sport or the horse?” My answer is always “the horse”...

I loved your story! I’m just getting back into riding in my 30’s. Growing up I learned to ride at a Dressage barn and there are no English riding facilities where I live currently so I switched to Western. I definitely wish I had learned a lot of these “cowboy methods” back when I was a teenager!! Going back to the basics of groundwork has totally changed everything for me! I can’t believe I use to jump on the back of horses that I could barely handle on the ground and think that was ok!

Thank you for all your videos. I had a 20 year break from riding having done some competitive dressage here in UK (medium level not GP!) and in my mid 40’s just started over and bought a big, scared very green horse. One month after having him I had a bad fall and realised his fears have to be addressed from the very beginning. I felt very alone as many people told me I should sell him. Anyway, we’ve taken it very slowly and we have a long way to go but we’re making steady progress and I’m loving every minute now. He’s still unbalanced and “big” in the school, rushing when he feels stressed but he tries sooooo hard for me! Small triumphs like his first successful leg yield, his first decent canter transition, his first hack alone without calling to every horse within a 5 mile radius, mean the world. I love your videos and find them very inspiring and supportive.

Remember at my house you got to ride with Sue and you got to ride Spion so it wasn't all bad! You did really work your ass off and you did have some not so good horses but you also had some that were good. remember setting sheep at the dog trial? The plastic garbage bag blowing right under Geronimo and he never moved a muscle. I am so glad that you have gone forward from that experience and found your way doing what you love!

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! I am learning so much! And, if i were a young gal instead of being a 66 yr old widow, I would really think BIG and work hard.... but tI am dreaming of leasing a horse, now that I am getting some good instruction with a local teacher. I just started with lessons last January, after very tiny bits of riding here and there through life. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT and for doing all these really clear and helpful videos for people like me!

This way I can focus more on better riding! I have purchased your program Dressage Academy, however, I have not had time to dive into it yet, but will as soon as my new life schedule begins! Lovely story/journey! I got to green jumper when I was riding in the seventies. Had great experiences. I was taking so many lessons my instructors let me work the stables on the weekend to work off the fees. I would book a mid week lesson in the winter cause no one would show up when it was -10ºC, so I got a private lesson. One stable I even worked full time and lived over the stable. I was uncomfortable with one of the instructors. I then had a German teacher for awhile, who I enjoyed. He was really big on a quiet leg. Thanks for sharing your journey! I like watching your postings cause they bring back great memories.

Thank you Amelia, I watched your video about your life with horses. You come across as a really good person, so honest and humble, which is rare, never change the way you are. You are a horse woman through and through. You did it your way and left no corner unturned. I am sure one day you will be lucky enough to make it right to the top, you deserve it. I see so many international riders who don't know how to ride well, but for some reason they are out there when they shouldn't. I am a German GP trainer/rider and came to England in 1970 to marry an English man who did not understand my love and passion for horses. So whilst I had a good life, but not the life with horses that I dreamed of. I admire you for your tenacity and your strength. xx❤

What a beautiful story!! You have talent not only as a rider, but as a teacher and a speaker. Only today have I watched a couple of your videos for the first time and am so happy I have. Unlike you, I got my first horse in my mid-50s and only started taking riding lessons a couple of years before that so I am very green to riding and horses, but am willing and determined to learn so when I can't ride, I'm watching videos. Luckily, I was able to buy a wonderful gentleman-of-a-horse...a Friesian gelding who has taught me so much and I really do agree with you in that the horse reflects the rider. My boy has shown me a lot about myself and I have come to realise that I must address my issues so that our connection can be crystal clear and solid. I live in a country that I am not from and the language here is not my English mother tongue so it has been an added challenge to learn to ride and, well, just about everything around it due to terminology and techniques that aren't always the same as in the US. As they say though, it is for the journey that one should take the trip...not just for the destination. Five years ago I would have NEVER thought I would have my own horse, nor did I really want one...now, I cannot imagine life without my horse. Thank you for your openness, your kindness, your generosity and your talent...you are now a companion on my journey.

I love you Amelia, I love your story, your outlook & your values! I watched a video of you one day driving out to ride & it was teaming with rain, just pelting down, & although u were in an indoor arena, you talked about the uninviting weather & how to embrace the opportunity to focus on the horsemanship, rather than the riding. So you filmed a lesson on teaching some essential groundwork exercises. And I've done alot of groundwork over the years, but your approach that day, your attitude & the relationship of the exercises to your dressage work, really resonated for me! I love your realistic, down to earth, attention to detail. And I love that you aim to impart the knowledge to help aspiring riders communicate more effectively with their equine partners. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge & skills & for modeling commitment! I've only began learning dressage this year & am trying to teach my uneducated horse simultaneously. It is hard, & can be frustrating. But I soak up as much content as I can for all the tips I can gather! You're a great inspiration & a great source of invaluable information! Thankyou for sharing all that you do!! 🐎❤️💫🙏

I loved this :) It was honest and authentic and generous. Thank you! You are literally my introduction to dressage. I’ve been working on horsemanship and following Buck Brannaman for the last chunk of time, and I have been wanting to move into exploring dressage, but I literally didn’t know where to start, and who might be kind, and accessible and have a bit more of a horsemanship feel, and wonderfully I found you and while ago. And through viewing this video I learnt more about your journey, and of your time at Uh Oh ranch, I’m so excited!! :)

Enjoyed hearing your story. I'm old enough to be your Mom, but still intent on infinite learning and with my own farm finally the last 12 years I have had more horses and learned so much more. Love the 2 I have now and have plenty to work with and each day our relationships expand and the riding improves.

Thank you Amelia, I have become a big fan and as a much older woman who never was indulged as a child and only took up riding as an almost senior, find you inspirational. It is very challenging, but fun and I love the fact that I can learn from a California trainer from my farm in rural northern New York. Keep up the good work and the great attitude.

Hi Amelia, Thank you for sharing your amazing story. When you take time to speak from the heart, you are so encouraging and inspiring. I have loved horses my entire life, but my journey had brought me away from them. Now in my years as a mature woman, entrepreneur, mom of a college freshman and wife, I am making it a priority to ride and spend time with horses whenever I possibly can. When I’m with them, I’m the real me. At my age, I have the realization that I will never own a horse, but I am content with Riding whenever I can and I do it with the intention of bringing my best game and living in the moment fully. Being so grateful for this rare opportunity. Even though I only ride randomly (when time, money and freedom align) I take a lesson on a little, sassy painted pony. She loves to work and so do I. My instructor is wonderful and hard-driving. We challenge each other whenever we’re together and all seem to love it (even the pony) You reinforced my idea of riding with intention, practicing natural horsemanship and always improving. Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing your journey! I’m sorry this is so looong! Lee

What a wonderful story Amelia! You are so deserving of where you are today! Thank you for all your sharing, not just this, it is so truely appreciative! Can I just add that you breakdown your explanations so wonderfully, making them easy to understand! Learning dressage can be so confusing, but at the end of the day it is how it is presented and explained to you that makes the massive difference with progress! X

I have been watching your video for several years and I like your lesson that simply clear to understood. and I'm inspired again from this your live session because I could know your thinking of horse and and let me know of horse's industry that how it is difficult same of begin country and front -run country. once more, I'm kind of person to learn hardly riding horse than others and now I starting to know the reason is not the horse but my consolidation (mentally and physically). but sure thing is that I love horse and not lazy to learn all of horse's things(Not just riding). Thanks Amelia! - from your big fan in Korea.

I hope a sponsor sees how very passionate and humble you are. You deserve to have more support after all you have done to be the rider you are today. You have worked so hard for this. I wish you all the best and truly hope that in your future you will be part of a dressage team with full support. I loved listening and learning from you. I am going to start riding horses again after 38 years. I used to ride when I was 11. I turn 50 next year. I loved riding back then but my parents couldn't afford to buy me a pony so I always rode school horses. That being the case, I was very lucky to have had many English riding lessons. Even though I have not been around horses for a very long time, they have always remained a part of me and my story and I do miss them being a part of my life. I really love dressage, I am always watching KZbin competitions, etc.. and hope to one day ride dressage on my own horse. I am nervous but excited and after listening to your story, it has really given me the confidence for when I get back in the saddle. Thankyou for bringing us all your fabulous experiences and expert advice in these videos!

Thanks so much for sharing; especially the part about working for your horses. It IS really discouraging to ride/work in a barn where elitism prevails. We recently left one that did, and have found a wonderful new one that rewards hard work and dedication.

Loved your story. I think that’s what makes you a better trainer in the long run. You have better understanding and appreciation for the horse and rider. When I was young I was so lucky to be given ponies that no one wanted, so we got them so they weren’t sent to slaughter. Me and my sister went to the local rider club on these ponies and competed against the fancier horses but not caring because it was just an appreciation of my parents and the love of these wilder ponies. Thankyou for your lessons, my own horse Arabian warmblood has had a difficult past. I couldn’t ride him in a bit but watching your videos we have progressed that far which blows my mind and makes so emotional. So just thankyou 😊

Listening to this adds a really useful dimension to your already helpful videos. I am grateful to you for sharing this. I’m in my 40s now and have ridden my whole life, often on tricky horses but I am just now really really focussed on improving my flat work skills and therefore riding skills in general. I learn so much from your tutorials alongside my lessons on my horse. Being more mature now with so many responsibilities I no longer get to ride lots and lots of horses, good or bad, like I used to and I never did it at the scale you did but I really wish I could go back in time and use what I’m learning now. But I’ve loved all of them and they’ve always gained something from my mum and me, even if it’s just being happier. Onwards and upwards. Enjoying my riding journey still. X

I've often watched your videos and wondered how you got to where you are today so thank you for sharing your story, which was very interesting. You have clearly worked so hard for everything which is in itself inspirational. I especially love your empathy for those of us on a limited budget 'training the horse we have'; I'm personally not competitive but I am very keen to learn and progress in my riding for the sake of my relationship with my quirky, sensitive horse. You have a lightness about your riding which I admire and also a unique way of explaining and demonstrating dressage concepts which really helps me be clear about what I need to do to help my horse. Thank you for giving of your time and experience so generously, I consider you a valuable resource x

This was awesome! I have always admired you, you are the kind of horse person I strive to be, doing it for the right reasons, with a humble, grateful, attitude- it IS very hard, I am not financially inclined, haha, I can barely afford my lessons, and not to mention I have only been riding for two years this July, I started at 36, haha, so I have a lot of catching up to do, and it is frustrating sometimes when everyone seems to have some kind of advantage, be it money or experience, I have to remind myself to just be grateful that I can even ride at all, and be with the horses I have come to love like my own when I am able to be with them, though it doesn't seem like enough, ONE day I will have my own, and if we do nothing more than work in the arena and take happy trail rides, I will be over the moon with joy, all I want is one of my own to love and bring along! I will keep working as hard as I am able to, and see what happens- I am just happy to get in the saddle a couple times a week lately! Thank you so much for sharing this, I feel you on a lot of levels, and I admire you even more than I did previously, if that is even possible! You have helped me so much on my riding journey, I honestly wouldn't be riding as well as I am now without your videos and your other resources! Sorry, I am Zoom phobic, otherwise I would love to join your live streams, I always try to watch the replay! Anyway, I ramble a lot, sorry! But truly thank you, so much, you have helped so many people like me! Good luck with your horses, and at any upcoming shows!
