If you're not struggling with alcohol addiction, you definitely know someone who is. For many, what started as fun has catapulted them into to a dark hole that is alcohol addiction. That first drink you wish you never had is now in control of your life.
You seem to be on a free fall, sinking deeper everyday despite every effort you put in to stop! Caroline Kagia is one of the very few who sank too low yet somehow found her way back up right in time and saved her life. She shares her journey tonight on Shared Moments with Justus.

Excellent stuff! Congratulations Caroline for turning your life around! It is truly never too late to make a change and this is the beginning of the rest of your life. You're a star and you'll go places. Your sobriety will stick, and you know why? Because you're self aware. That's the most important ingredient in recovery. Also, your father is one many of us can only dream of. Having being raised by a toxic narcissistic father myself, I can only imagine what it is like to have a dad who is the "embodiment of Jesus Christ" in my life. A dad who loves unconditionally. You are truly blessed. My mother is the gem, the angel who loves her children unconditionally to "balance out" my father. Your dad is that same gem that balances out your mom. God knows to have balance when he pairs up parents. All the best in your life Caroline!

There's a piece of terrible advice that goes around: "You are your child's parent not their friend". Her dad got it the right way. He was her friend all through. The healthy way to think about it is that we are our children's best friends but we are not their peers. A friend is someone you can turn to when the world falls apart. A peer is someone who is at your level of experience and may not be the best influence.

Unlike other substance abuses, Alcoholism is also both genetically inclined and a generational curse. No one understands Alcoholics and the behaviors thereof. Instead of rebuking, shunning, ridiculing and isolating us, society must understand that behind all that drinking is a delicate soul and human yearning to be loved. Once there is love, there is a shift in behavior. Yes . I am a struggling Alcoholic and I know I will come out clean because Rome was not built in a day

One thing I have learned is that she was spoilt by the father just because she was named after the father's mother. I don't know but I wonder why she was, and it seems she is not even today close to the mother. One thing people should know,, of you are rude to one of your parents, then you must pay for it. Humble and repent to your mother because you are also a parent now. One thing I can't encourage is naming children after their grandparents.

Thank you for sharing. At minute 32, that's a hell of a breakthrough. I have come to learn from experience, observation of my friends and relatives struggling with addiction and later learning from my wife who is a therapist that addiction is an unconscious attempt at self medication. There are people who use substances for many years but do not suffer addiction. They grow out of it and move on with their lives after the younger years. However, where there is an unattended trauma particularly from childhood, that causes guilt, shame, mistrust or anger, the mind looks for sources of dopamine to suppress the painful discomfort. Addiction ends when we attend to the trauma or find acceptance in a healthy community or both.

I thank myself for having chose to completely stay away from alcohol. I tried to drink once or twice and it just wasn't fun. In my 30s now and it's one of the best decisions of my life. It's also crazzy how people react when I tell them that I don't drink; which means alcohol is completely normalized In society. What people don't know is that Alcohol is actually even more dangerous than meth and Cocaine and working in a jail for the last 10yrs has taught me so much on alcoholism.

Where is the link to buy the book. I live in the U.S and I research the mother wound. So glad we’re talking openly about this as Africans. I think what saved me a bit is my dad comes from a healthy family AND I was not sexually assaulted as a child. I’m the exception, not the rule in African communities. The mother wound if untreated, repeats itself generationally. In my family it was with my grandmother ( maternal side) , mother and I’m in therapy to try and treat the wound which I’ve researched is actually passed through the EGG ( maternal dna). We are a wounded generation and need help, God and talks like this to realize were not alone!!! She relapsed during covid which isn’t long ago, I pray for her healing!,,

This is so nice , Kagia is a very good orator , It’s nice hearing someone who has gone through addiction talk on it and advice and a woman to add on that. Sad thing most clubs on weekends are filled with more ladies than men , In the next ten years there will be more women addicts than men , look at it this way , the more women get empowered the more the indulge in alcohol like men , problem with society is that more you get resources more you want to drink expensive , prove to your friends and make a statement , now imagine a woman with money , It was a man problem but now will cut through all gender . Mark this comment , come 2030 , I will come and rewrite this comment , the stats will be so high that women will be more addicts.

Thanks Caroline for sharing your story. I shared My story recently in the paper and it was liberating but also felt good to see so many people identify. We don't have enough stories in Kenya of women sharing their alcoholism recovery stories. Yours inspired me alot while I was still drinking. And now I'm sober and giving back too. I relate with alot of your personality early on being so naive and feeling out of place and swearing never to drink..God bless. So happy to witness your growth.
