My Struggles as an INTROVERT on Social Media (Emotional)

I struggle with being an introvert and with the idea that I can't always communicate what I want to in a way most people can understand. Sometimes being an introvert makes me feel isolated, I also don't think people believe that I'm introverted because of social media. It makes me feel insecure and isolated and compounds my imposter syndrome. But some I feel being an introvert has gifted me with a bit of self-awareness and thoughtfulness that has helped me in life.
Maybe you also have this feeling if you're an introvert but are active in social media. Or maybe the current situation in the world has made you think about how you might be isolated.

It’s just my lived experience. I can be empathetic but that’s not always the same thing as really understanding others. And I myself often am not understood or have to be long winded because I’m threading together several macro or micro points. Also I tend to look at things holistically in a world that always wants you to pick a side. It often makes me feel very alone and isolated . Added to that very few ppl understand the nature of success and unconventional success is even less understood. Now with society obsessed with the idea of “privilege” people don’t bother to get context before judging the gap between what you have and what they don’t, by the gap between what you had to overcome and change about yourself, from someone who might have started with even less than them. There are so many other things I could go into that create a feeling of isolation as well in terms of being an outlier in your own family... etc

Roberto Blake “Thinking is difficult, that’s why most people judge.” Carl Jung 🙃 Also, a lot of people don’t care about the truth, they just want an excuse to feel better about their situation so they don’t have to change anything. 🤷🏻‍♀️ maybe I’m just a cynic. Lol

"It's really hard for people who live very much in the present to deal with you and to see things from your perspective, because for you everything is in the future, everything is about what is being built, everything is about turning a thought into a thing." That is the most relatable thing I've ever heard in my life. Awesome video!

I'm a super introvert to the point that its hard for me to convey my thoughts and I have a hard time pronouncing words, however, I always wanted to create videos and after years of putting it off, I'm finally pursuing that goal. I've always been an introvert, and I used to beat myself up about it, because people always made me feel that there was something 'wrong' with me. It took me a long, long time to overcome that feeling of inadequacy. I still struggle sometimes, but I've worked on myself long and hard to accept myself without judgment. I learnt that it's a personality type, and not a personality defect, and there was nothing wrong with me. I look at it as a blessing now, because it helps me to cut out so much of crap and so many irrelevant people from my life. And being by myself helps me to be super creative and productive. Sometimes when I used to watch your videos, I used to notice that you would look away from the camera, and I remember thinking 'he's an introvert, and this is difficult for him, looking straight at the camera, knowing that there are thousands of people on the other side'. I still feel that way sometimes while talking to people. My mom used to tell me when I was a kid that people might think I was not confident or had something to hide it I didn't look them straight in the eye. It used to make me sooooo uncomfortable because I was SO shy! But now I'm totally proud of and comfortable with my Introversion. It's kinda like my superpower 😎

'life' because of my constantly liking being alone, reading, thinking, and all that stuff. but i guess it comes down to dealing with the insecurities and struggles, taking a long view on things and embracing our unique strengths in our introvertedness. youre so right - we can still be successful and do great things despite the introvertedness. thanks roberto for sharing. i hope that one day i will break out of my cacoon and share about my introvert issues like you are doing...

I really resonated with this video. As you said my default setting is also an introvert but I do try and talk to people when I go out (usually just forcing myself) because I do like other people's ideas and opinions. As introverts we live in our head so much that sometimes we have to listen to other people to let go of our own thinking. I chuckled at the being direct, because I was told that at work. But the younger adults still come to me for advice because I don't bullshit them and give them fluff. They come to me because they will get the honest answer. I don't always say things in the nicest way and that is what I am working on. Loved this video.

I relate to the majority of the things you said! This is exactly why I relate to you and love your videos and the way you explain things. Introverts put themselves out there despite their insecurities. I love one-on-one conversations, working for hours and days on my own, but as soon as I get into a group - that's a different thing :-). When making youtube videos or other ways of talking 'one-way', introverts can fully express themselves without feeling rushed. They can take the time to lay out all their thoughts and follow their train of thought. Please continue to do what you're doing, it's inspiring!

I find you very relatable.. especially after the last email you sent out. Re: criticism - I totally relate to hanging on to every bad thing. I have pretty bad social anxiety and I even get really nervous sending out newsletters. Of course someone responded with " no one wants your opinion on x,y, and z". I know I need to ignore it, but it's there, in the back of my mind, eating away. It's difficult to "just be confident" and "stop caring what people think". Anyway - I say all that to let you know I appreciate you opening up and I think you're relatable to more people than you realize.

Roberto: I have been watching and enjoying learning from your videos for a couple of years... 1. About friends: my mother always says that you are lucky if you even have one true friend in life...and she's right! 2. Being relatable is an equation - you can only bring one half of it to any encounter...the other person/people have to supply the other half... 3. The most sensitive among us always feel things most deeply and hold back some part of ourselves as a protective mechanism. 4. Bullying happens to people who are gifted because they bring out jealousy and envy in others. I know... 5. You have come such a long way from your first video - you have truly challenged yourself and pulled out the best of yourself and shared it with us. You are gifted and generous. Stay you - a whole lot of people like what you're about, just the way you are. Truly liked this sharing you did - but only continue if you enjoyed the process too.

Roberto, I can seriously relate to this entire video. As I kept watching, I kept saying to myself. "Yep. Yep that's me. Oh yeah. I get that." But the quote that I relate to the most from this video is "I really wish that, much like an extrovert, I didn't care what other people think of me." I wish that was a switch that you could turn off but I haven't found that switch yet. I'll start a video and in the middle of shooting it be like "nope. People will hate this. Or this isn't good enough. Or I'm not good enough to be talking about this." So I appreciate the vulnerability. Just know you are NOT alone! (even though you may prefer to be alone!😁 )

Roberto, I can relate to you. I am sure many people can. A lot of us dealt with bullies all our lives. Being made fun of, mocked, and picked on by evil spirits isn’t fun and is designed to do many things. It takes us years to figure out why we were targeted. It’s because we are different and we have the light. Did you know that? I feel myself drawn to your videos because I see it in you. The light. The passion. And I love that. Not to mention the learning. You are a great teacher. I think many of us get to a point in life where we are both introvert and extrovert, depending on the situation. Now, I am a highly spiritual being so negative energy makes me suspicious and I turn the host into a case study. I am a behavioral analyst underneath everything I do. It appears you also have that in you. We are creators and leaders, not 100% followers. That is why we get a lot of hate. And you know what? We also learn that haters who keep hating are only frustrating themselves because in the end, they will still hate, while we spread the love! Love and light my fellow brethren. ❤️🙏

Do you know how helpful it was to hear the words "living inside my head" or "friendly with without being friends"? And radical candour is such a balancing act. I have found making videos to be really liberating - interacting with the monitor and mic is such a helpful buffer. I still find face to face incredibly hard, but I am gaining skills. This video and "you are not broken and don't need fixing" are my two favourites of all your content because they both speak to me on personal and very targetted level. Thank you so much for sharing these things with us and for not hitting delete.

Appreciate you. Yes it’s a real balancing act and can be hard on the people around you if you don’t lend it right and communicate how much you care and demonstrate good faith. Most of internet interactions are bad faith criticism unfortunately, and that increases the anxiety creative people have. I’m glad you like the more thoughtful videos. I know they won’t get a ton of views but I make them for people like us

Love this so much Roberto! Sounds like we had very similar childhoods - working 2-3 jobs while being class president, juggling debate team etc. while in high school. I am thankful for that hustle though because as you mentioned it built character and pushed me way outside my comfort zone. You are an amazing person and add value to so many! Thank you for being YOU! 💕❤️

I enjoy watching videos like this one. There are plenty of people who are great at being the best polished commercial version of themselves. And that has it's place. But I''ll take authenticity over style or trendy, especially when it comes to motivation. Thank Roberto. Also, enjoyed the broll of you taking photos.

Great video! I'm almost 30 and I would say that it is normal as an adult to only have a handful of friends. I would say I'm mostly extroverted and I find you very relatable and inspiring. I really like this kind of video from you! I guess for your question, I'm trying to work on putting myself out there. A lot of stuff has happened in my life in the past year or so that has reduced my confidence in talking to people. I guess people may not notice thanks to my extroversion but in my head I'm trying a lot harder than I used to. I've become hyper aware of what I say and how I say it and what may happen if I say the wrong thing. This was never an issue for me in the past.

@@RobertoBlake I just started watching your videos, this one caught my eye b/c I'm also an introvert but need to "put myself out there" for work (I hate it). When I saw this I thought "yep, he's my tribe". There are a lot of us out there who are introverts and experience the same / very similar experiences and emotions you describe. May I suggest if you've not read it Susan Cain's book "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Cannot Stop Talking ". After reading that book you will see that you are not weird, you are in excellent company and the world needs introverts and the gifts we bring more than ever.

Roberto, I can relate with a lot of what you said. Growing up, where you had the strong emotional support system in your home, my strongest emotional support came from adults outside my home, like teachers, administrators, and other parents. It created a disconnect I struggle with to this day. My constant pursuit of acceptance from my family led to overachievement in school, and eventually, in the workplace. That being said, whenever compliments or accolades were given to me, they were hard to accept because they were rarely accompanied by the same from my parents. Forming close work relationships has always been a challenge for me, unless the job itself facilitated the interaction and exposure. I could go on for days, but I just wanted to let you know your words were important for me to hear today. I haven't come across many who have experienced the types of things I've experienced. Just hearing you convey your struggles and how you use them to your advantage let me feel a little less isolated today, and that is a very good thing. Thank you, and your "100 Crappy Videos" mantra has been ringing in my head ever since the day it came out. I don't know if I will ever get to that point, but I will always work to find a way to create something awesome today.

11:40 Roberto, I have Asperger's and am on the autism spectrum. A lot of the challenges you describe here are things I went through growing up, too, and some things I am still working on. I'm no psychology specialist like the one I went to for diagnostic purposes, and obviously I don't know you _that well_ from only watching your videos for 5 years soon. But it may be something to look into, especially as one can draw from experiences by those who struggle with the same things. That's why I seeked out a diagnose - to get certainty in my feelings of being different, and for that to lead to confidence in taking the necessary care for myself so that I could manage my everyday (like giving myself understanding with loud sounds, long social events, allowing myself to hyper-focus on my interests....). I too _really struggle_ with pushing myself to do things I don't want to, but that are seen as "needed" in adult world. I get around eventually, but the biggest problem is when I don't get enough time to spend on my interests, because then everything just slooooows down and things fall apart

I totally feel the 'not being relatable' part. Ive had a very privileged life in a lot of ways, and it makes me not want to share much about my past and my life in general. I also struggle to not always say whats on my mind too often and often being misunderstood. I do agree that its absolutely possible to be successful on youtube and social media still, but it doesnt come as easily for us as it does extroverts 🤷‍♀️

Have you considered that you need to edit want you to say less that it'd make you more understood? My wife is more introverted than me, and some of the crazy things she says when she's trying to not be introverted is worse than if she said what was really going on in the inside. She's a truly beautiful person. I'm glad she has friends who laugh with her when it comes out wrong. :) I am really more introverted then I'm letting myself appear. I suppose I could be more honest as well.

My goodness, this is so relatable. I keep stuff in my mind on what someone had said, and take it to heart. Lately I've been telling myself, is thinking about this good for me. Is that person even thinking about or even remember what happened. This at least helps me get out of the loop of self over hyper analyzing. Great video 👍

This definitely hit home. I know being on social is important but some days it's like I don't have the emotional energy to interact or something, for a lot of those hyper, self-analytical reasons you outlined. One thing I found that helped is to sort of bulk write out social media updates on days where I feel like I have more mental bandwidth to do so. I try to curb the 'prove yourself' impulse, but since my flavor of anxiety is mostly rooted in imposter syndrome that remains a struggle. I know what you mean about having days where you wish you were more extroverted, but at the same time I have to imagine that if I wasn't wired the way that I am that maybe I wouldn't be as creative or driven. So I guess I'm saying that taking the good with the bad helps me stay even keeled. As for the QOTD, I'm actively trying to let my guard down a bit more to connect with people more fully online and that's a little scary but not NEARLY as scary as I know I'm making it out to be when I'm tempted to be more dismissive. Thanks for the additional insights dude :)
