My Studio AUDIO Routing: Stereo Patchbays

Ok this feels like a strangely nerdy music powerpoint presentation, but i like it. After my MIDI setup, this one is about audio routing, DJ mixers, that mythical stereo patchbay, and a lot of cables.

If I wanted to do the opposite (a setup full mono to maximise my in/out in a space restricted home studio) can I use TRS -> TS cable (left and right signal get "fused" together) to convert stereo to mono or it is not a good idea?

Hi ! I’m rebuilding and organizing my new studio set up, with a patchbay too ! Few questions : - I have the Sherman Filter bank with one mono input, let’s admit I feed it with my prophet rev 2 stereo output, do I need to connect the Sherman with a mono jack 6.3 to double jack 6.3 into the patchbay ? Or do I send the prophet rev to into the Sherman with a double 6.3 jack (mono) to a one stereo jack into the mono input to the Sherman ? Hope I’m clear ! Thanks for you help

Conceptually, there’s a few different ways to setup a patchbay. Because it’s 100% passive a patchbay doesn’t know what kind of signals you are using, but that also means it can’t automatically “do the right thing” and convert signals from Balanced to Unbalanced, or Stereo to Mono, or split/merge an Insert cable into separate send and returns. So you could just bring all your signals to the back of the patchbay as is, labeling them to what they are, and do the conversion on the front. In your case you would have the Prophet come in as a Left Out and a Right Out, and the Sherman as a Mono In, and you can either patch the left of the prophet into the in of the Sherman, or merge the signals from L and R into a combined L+R mono before sending it to the Sherman. Personally I went down the route that Stereo is a superset of Mono, so everything gets converted to a stereo signal at the patchbay level, even if that means that some signals are in fact either merged L+R ->mono or mono->dual-mono

Yes indeed we are more into dual mono than stereo. I will try to merge/convert either the signal of the prophet into a one stereo or dual mono, or do the same with the shermann, one mono or dual mono. Many thanks for your time olivier!

my setup is more complex than most. normally it's just whatever cable you normally use, get 2 so stuff got to/from the patchbay.
