I bought a patchbay few moths ago for all my effects pedals and synths. I’m so glad you posted this. I’m a fairly new to analog and I didn’t understand why no one else talked about this. I think this video is fantastic.

Caveat: Depending on what kind of signal you are working with there are also more advanced ways to wire certain patches i.e. normalled, half-normalled or parallel.

Definitely great advice. I have one PB already, but need at least one more to account for all the gear. So far, I’ve gone the mixer route. But, have known the benefits a PB can provide. I too have unused gear for my mastering chain, that the PB would make ready for daily use. Once I buy more cables, I’ll plan out my PB design. I’ve just been buying more gear over the past years. Which adds to the confusion. Going back to having an organized workflow, would surely increase creativity. 👍🏾✌🏾✊🏾

Good video. I could probably use one. I completely feel you on just not wanting to move the gear around constantly. It just costs so much to be organized. Always a tough choice when you balance buying gear vs buying patch bays/racks/cables, etc.

Very good advise. I've used a mixer instead of a patch bay for the past few years but as my collection of instruments exceed my mixers channels I've decided to get a patch bay to keep everything connected and the mixer controls what I'm using at the time. Thanks for reaffirming this for me

One very important thing is to use TRS cables to prevent noise, even with the signal being mono. Bit more expensive but 100% worth it.

Great vid as always! I have a question: When you plugged the Rhodes output (mono/one cable) to the SP202 (stereo input), the sounds come out in stereo and not just on one side. How do you set up your PB so that mono sources can be patched into a stereo source and not have only one side of speaker output sound? (My Analog Heat for example outputs only one side) 🤷🏻
@mpchead
@mpchead 2 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken if you input a signal into the let channel of the AH you'll get a stereo out. In this video I was using the patchbay to connect the rhodes to 1 input of the Mpc and then the mpc puts it out in stereo.

Agree. Custom length and lighter gauges of cables. 1/4 patch bays are pretty heavy once every patch is filled. So getting a Rear Cable Support Bar is essential.

Although mixers do a similar job of input and output the patchbay is much different with the only purpose of intercepting signals and easily routing them.

There is some latency? For example playing rhodes thru patchbay to roland and sampling to mpc?
@mpchead
@mpchead 2 жыл бұрын
No latency. Maybe it was because of the effects I had in the mpc. The patchbay is just a through signal so it should not create latency.

Soooo... Your rack has an awful lot of empty space. Time for some 19" samplers so your patchbay doesn't feel so alone? I was thinking about getting a patchbay as well just so I don't have to unplug stuff on my interface all the time and to put less strain on the input jacks. Great video as always dude!
