Due to the unusual nature of 2020, I've been finding myself spending more time with birds than ever before. The birds bring about a unique sense of hope and tranquility that cannot be found elsewhere. The Baltimore Oriole particuly caught my eye, and in this video you will see the story of my spring and summer observing them.

Great video. In December 2008 an oriole was on my bird feeder here in Connecticut. Sent the Audubon Society an email asking what to do as it was clear he did not migrate. They responded that if I fed him oranges and grape jelly all winter he might make it. So I did for three months. He waited for me every morning to bring out his orange. And one day in March he stopped coming. But it really was an amazing experience. Beautiful birds, which clearly you appreciate. Thank you.

Thanks so much for sharing this! It's so fascinating. I've often wondered about birds not migrating, and figured that out of all the millions of birds out there, there had to be some that miss that window or just don't leave for some reason. It's just awesome that he waited outside every day for you, and that you were able to get him through the winter. Such a great story!

Orioles love giant bird of paradise. I have them planted in my backyard and the Orioles gather almost 2 foot strands of palm fronds from around the neighborhood and weave their nests resembling wicker baskets into the undersides of leaves every year like clockwork. They are very acrobatic and remind me of monkeys.

@@NickSchrader Well done with the telling of this amazing bird..and your love of them is obviously displayed by your care in feeding them. I too, am a "Bird Woman," as my husband calls me. I watch, feed, study and take amateur photos of all of God's creations! I once had the privilege of watching an oriole build it's nest 20 feet above our deck in an overhanging Sycamore tree branch. (You probably already know that they build that hanging nest at the end of a spindley branch to prevent other small animals, i.e., squirrels getting to the nest) With my zoom on my camera, I could see some of my long hairs and strands of blue tarp material woven into the nest. Thanks for doing this video, liked it very much!

Thanks for making this Nick! When I had Covid last spring, I was quarantined to my yard in the city and I was so lonely. One day, an oriole landed and I had never seen one before. That bird started my interest in bird watching and I've been waiting all year for them to return. I saw my first one yesterday after a year. I moved out of the city to a place where there are hundreds of bird species. Now I go birding every other day. I'm always in awe. Your documentary is very comforting.

I will treasure this video for years to come... I miss our birdie "Black Hooded Oriole" friends from my country hometown, Port Costa - Ca. After our move to a much larger city last year, due to the pandemic, we had to sell our family home of 4 generations... I raised my babies there, I was raised there, my Mother also raised there, & her Mom & Dad before her was raised there. They were highschool sweethearts & got married straight after... My Gramps was the Engineer on our railroads in the late 1800s. Port Costa was the World's largest Wheat & Potatoe Port & had a ferry named "The Solano" who carried Gramp's Whole Train across the straits from Port Costa to Benicia so the train could then move on to other parts of the bay area... It also traveled to San Francisco. My Grandfather, Engineer Earl, suffered a heart attack on his train & passed away... He worked hard each & every day on his beloved train for over 30 yrs, was never sick a day in his life & came home after a long days work to build & add more stories & rooms to his home for his ever growing family! I know Gramps Earl loved the birds in our town & so did my parents... They raised bees, doves, chickens & were proficient gardeners & canned all their goods. I learned from my Grams how to can & pickle amongst many many other chores/talents. I miss our home & our dear Birdie Friends... 🐤 This video brings me much JOY to watch, listen & learn - It's like a continuation of my life as I too explored & witnessed many firsts with our B. H. Orioles Friends. THANK YOU!

Good day! So glad you can appreciate these great birds. I was badly injured and found myself home trying to entertain myself. I was feeding hummingbirds when an Oriole showed up. So I found a hummingbird feeder with holes big enough for Orioles to drink from, bought a cool e bucket jelly holder and a pole to put orange halfs on. I find jelly is the big draw for Baltimores and sugar water for the orchard orioles. Im hoping to have better luck with mealworms this year. Last year I had a male that would take his beak and aggressively slide side to side and spill them all over. They are so pretty singers and so calming to me.

Great video and narration. I've had the pleasant surprise of seeing my first Oriole visit our hummingbird feeder four years ago. Actually a mating pair male and female. They have not missed a beat coming back every year since, one year I even had a juvenile visit a number of times. They are a joy to watch, but I learned early on to remain both quiet and still, otherwise, they would fly off. Very skittish bird. I've lived at my current residence for 16 years and never saw one before until that day four years ago, nor have I ever seen one flying around or standing in a tree. I live in Northern California and welcome not only hummingbirds, Orioles, but an array of songbirds and doves to another bird feeder in the backyard. I tried putting out grape jelly a few times, but as soon as I do the yellow jackets come out and scared the birds away. They would go after the hummingbird feeder as well and I have whacked my fair share of them with a fly swatter. I stopped doing that last year and it's not that bad actually. I put out a yellow jacket trap at the beginning of summer and so do many other neighbors and it seems that has helped keep them at bay. If you don't do anything they will build multiple nests under your roof eves. Anyway, the Oriole is a beautiful bird in light of the fact we don't get that many very colorful birds at my latitude. This year was a down year, I believe I saw only one come by, I heard them in the trees several times, but that was about it. I hope they return next year or maybe their babies will. Thanks again for supporting our winged buddies.

Unfortunately, for reasons known only to them, they did not return this year so far, though I keep the feeder full of grape jelly. Rain or sun they consistently show up. I must have a dozen or more each day. Occasionally I get one right at the kitchen sink window ledge so close to watch. OMG a Robin can be territorial. One year I had one at the kitchen window banging on it attacking the Robin reflection. Every morning early it would be there and more during the day.

Absolutely enjoyed watching your video, very well made. I ,like you , fell in love with the Orioles in 2018, the year my beloved dog passed away at my feet. It started out with Cardinals, but that year was a very special year because we had a late spring snow and a cold spell , which meant many migrators needed help at the feeders. I even did the meal worms and you are so right, although I never was able to find their nests , the parents brought their young to the source of food late July. It was such an amazing experience. This is another unique year because it has been a very cold spring here. Today , I counted 5 male Baltimore orioles in my backyard tree all there at the same time, and 2 males at the orange station. Incredible. Hope you have another great year of watching the returning birds.

I moved to Ohio 19 years ago from the South and my first Spring up North I had an Oriole visit my Hummingbird feeder. I was so in awe with its bright orange color.. i had to find out what type of bird it was. I’ve been feeding them since. I always look forward to their return every year, which is right on April 28th most years. They are frequent visitors and I never tire of seeing them. 😍 Enjoyed this documentary very much! Thank you for sharing!

So pleased to have scrolled passed the many cheesy videos, to finally find yours! My husband and I sat together watching it during our lunch break (in our office) and loved it! You should be proud...it was as good as those from National Geographic and the like. We too, were blessed to have Orioles visit our yard for the first time last year. My husband immediately built an Oriole feeder and we held our breathe and waited. They returned a few times that summer. Just a week ago, we again spotted a pair in our trees. We'd be thrilled to see babies! Watching and hoping...

I LUUV this. We’ve been feeding Orioles for the past 3 years and mourn the day when they leave for their long migration. Last year when they brought their chicks along for food, we were horrified to see they were all n]Brown Headed Cowbirds, nest parasite birds. So we are praying this year, they are raising Orioles that we love . . Cowbirds, not so much. Thank you for sharing your talent and love of nature!

Fantastic video! I never knew where the Baltimore Oriole migrated from. I am in awe of your video & it makes me want to put out some foo for them. I have many varieties of birds in my yard & at the feeder…I will be hoping & praying I will be able to have this feathered friend as my guest as well.
