My Survival Cache: Lessons Learned

I built two Survival Cache's from 4" PVC pipe to store our survival gear and goods when we begin our Bug Out Location work. Right now there's no place to store any gear or goods at the BOL, so the thought was to use these 4" cache tubes for that purpose. We'd be able to keep the cache's at the BOL, well hidden as they're camouflaged, so that we don't have to transport the goods and gear on each trip. What I found out was that the 4" size was a bit limiting; items I thought would be essential in case we got stuck there or had to bug-out in a hurry simply did not fit in the cache tube.

Have your tried putting in a few strands of paracord i to the tube? When you need to empty it, you can grab the loose ends near the opening , and pull it out, helping to extract the guts.

You can get food grade 5 gallon buckets with lids for free at the bakery part of many grocery stores. All of that stuff would fit in them and you throw a few oxygen absorbers in them and your set. If you bury them in the ground with flat rocks on top of them critters can not dig down to get to them and they will last for years.

So I'm guessing that if you decide to go with 4", you should take a 4" plastic ring (cut away from a piece of pipe) and take it with you to the store when you buy supplies. If the stuff passes through, you buy it. If it doesn't, well...

Why not buy dry food (instant rice, dehy refried beans, Ramen, dehy hash browns, peanut butter power, freeze-dried veggies, freeze-dried meat, sugar, Tang drink mix...) and re-package into small (pint and quart) Mylar bags with oxy absorbers? And individually labeling each bag of course. Little bags can easily fit inside a 4" diameter tube. Why not buy small jars and bottles of olive oil, liquor, honey, jam ... and seal these in Mylar too so if ground water leaks into your cache tube, the metal lids won't rust and the paper labels peel off? Small bottles and jars are also less likely to break when dropped than are the larger bottles and jars. Mylar packaging of useful, nonfood items, such as butane lighters, candles, knives, batteries, etc. to prevent water damage makes good sense too. Another thing to consider is the less metal you have in your cache tube, the less likely someone with a metal detector will decide your cache location is worth digging up.

The things you want to hide in the cache are great... but most have short shelf lifes, or have metal lids. Not great combos in a cache... and if you are out that means you are going to stay away for a while, right.. well you might think of heirloom seeds for long term.... and get things you know you will eat... another thing is get books on a chip and make sure you have a way to get to read then, cause you will be needing knowledge of how to do things(can, make medicines, garden, first aid,....)

Good thinking to do a survival cache at the cabin...in case of fire it is wise to have one...just a tip....sealed gear in vacuum seal bags... and comm...like a small cell phone if there is a signal....and get it at the opposite where the dominant winds are....buried is best in case of forest fire...best luck to you...and use smaller package...cordage would also be nice...ramen noodles crushed works too....

Great camo paint job! If you use plumber's white tape, it should seal it water tight, if not use plumber's putty on the thread also. By looking at your land, if you have to bug out, the rest of are in deep S---!

Peanut butter is an excellent source of fat and protein, but don't get the regular pb as it has the bad fats that will clog your arteries. Spam is ok in moderation, but again get the 25% less fat / sodium.

Nice video. I like the setup and the painted cache tube. You kept it simple, but you made a good point and offered some food for thought. I always figured that one may need to have different size cache tubes or use alternate containers in order to accommodate (Fit) the gear and supplies we want to pack in them. Your demonstration focused on food and I realize maybe those are just a few examples for the video, (I'm sure you eat other foods) but the large container of pepper is a good idea. I'd pack a box of other spices, but the same size containers, in a cache for personal use and even as barter. And the canned meats are great. I think some dry foods should be added such as rice, beans, and canned veggies and fruits. That way one cache provides a good assortment. On a negative note, I personally don't like JIF. My favorite is Skippy Super Chunky Peanut Butter. Peter Pan or Clover Valley are okay too. Otherwise, a thumbs up!

For about $20, shipped, you can get the tall 30mm mortar cans. Basically the size of a .50 cal can, but it stands 3 1/2 feet tall. Gasket sealed. Give it a coat of heavy duty protectant, and it will last for decades underground. Even left bare I would bet 10-12 years. Big enough to add a AR-15 broken down.

10" inch schedule 40 PVC would also make a good choice. Big enough to hold most items and a smaller diameter than a five gallon bucket. You can cut your length to fit just about anything. The 10" cap, screw cap and female adapter would be a greater cost, but worth it in the long run. After the cache runs out you can use it for water.

Use pipe dope for the threads on the pvc. It will make it water tight also it will keep the threads from getting full of gunk.

S. Hansen vertical if possible, in order to leave the smallest trace of its presence. If you're worried about metal detectors finding it then "seed" the area with uninteresting cheap junk, like an old vehicle starter motor, or a vcr. Makes it easier for you to find with a detector and map as well.

I built two, so the plan was to have for food and related items and the other for basic survival items: fire kit, knives, flashlights, tarps, etc. I may put a 6" cache tube together for the larger items.

Reference Cache lessons learned. Your on to something buddy. Recommend you use that 4 inch cache at your location to store valuables, ammo, etc... Things that are heavy to carry during evacuation. Won't hold much, but it won't go anywhere either. If you want to bury food, get some vittles vaults and caulk around the outer joints. You can get them fairly large.Splice

I bought 55 gallon food grade removable clamp-on top drums for $10 each. They had held vegetable oils used by a soap making company. Sprayed the drums and lids outer sides with rustoleum rusty metal primer, then hand painted my camo design with foam throwaway brushes using 1 qt. cans of satin latex exterior house paints I had tinted to camo looking colors, black, tan, green etc.. The interiors were painted already, and were simply cleaned of their veggie oil. I replaced the lid seals with neoprene foam adhesive weather stripping. Tightening the band clamps bolts sealed the drums pretty darn well. I welded chain links to the clamp bolts and padlock a chain around a tree and to the drum clamp bolt links. This way I can look and see that it has not been entered and don't need to open it to check it. The only issue is temperature extremes, so you shouldn't put in things which cannot freeze or stand hot summers temps. Bushes and foliage can shield from the sun somewhat. The 3 drums are hard to spot in a thicket of brush. All 3 cost me about $50 total to put together.

You are looking at the problem the wrong way round. First find a suitable container then pack it , not choose a narrow pipe then try to make things fit Pipe and fittings are expensive, lots of buckets or drums with lids that are inexpensive.

@Timberland1 Most guns won't fit in a 4" pipe. An AR requires at least an 8" tube which will set you back around $130 to build including the end caps. Here's an option I'm surprised no one has brought up. It's 12" in diameter and about 4 feet long, truly water proof, less likely to crack in extreme cold, and already built for this purpose. Better yet, it costs less than building your own. Supply caches are really not meant to hold much. Roughly just enough to keep you on the go to get you to the next cache, or your destination. Do you need 6 months worth of peanut butter and jelly? Are you going to be carrying that much bread? How much pepper do you need on your canned chicken? What do you need the maple syrup for? Will you be carrying 20# of pancake mix? Do you really need a whole 750ml bottle of liquor? For more than one reason that should be obvious, if you're on the move, you probably shouldn't be drinking much alcohol. And what's with the Mason jars? All of those larger size containers of stuff is just extra weight. Really not seeing the logic behind some of these choices for a "survival cache".
