Frying power controller chips with aftermarket chargers isn’t just a switch problem. And it’s not all aftermarket chargers either. Phones laptops and tablets are vulnerable to it as well. The really basic and not too long explanation is that with especially cheap no brand /gas station chargers the cables and bricks aren’t built with voltage regulators and safety mechanisms in place to protect your device from over volting or a power surge. So when that surge comes through to your device the power controller gets fried which sucks, but at least it probably protected the rest of the motherboard from also getting fried. The way to prevent this is to use the original charger (duh) or a high quality cable from a name brand like Samsung, Anker, Apple, Belkin, or Nomad to name a few. Cables/bricks from companies like these have chips inside the cables and bricks themselves that regulate voltage to protect your device and are designed to be able to handle the power spikes so your device doesn’t have to. Sorry it’s long, but electronics repair is something of a hobby of mine 😁

Damn really sorry to hear about the switch, but definitely staying away from unofficial chargers after hearing this- so thanks for your sacrifice? lol. Hope to see another video soon saying the repair was flawless :)

From personal experience everytime my switch has died (it use to die out a lot since i didn't take care of it) all my games with no save cloud ended up getting completely reset. I sent mine to Nintendo themselves and never used off brand controllers. Personally i'd hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Hope it gets fixed. This happened to 3 of my switches and a faulty official Nintendo charger I had. My wife would use the charger with her own switch (V2) with no issues. The switches I owned all were used for retro uses. So one day she decided to use her charger and pretty much the story is the same as yours. And how we did not throw this charger away idk. Because it claimed the rest of the switches I owned and lastly a steam deck. From there I threw that garbage away forever.

At what point would you want to actually upgrade to a new switch just to make sure it doesn’t come to this? I still have my launch switch and this does concern me that it can potentially happen although I do stick with the official peripherals and haven’t had any issue overall other than an issue with a dock that was acting strange…

Since it’s a launch Switch you can perform a NAND backup by using TegraRCM. Otherwise idk it sorta happened to me really suddenly

If it makes you feel better given by the fact that it died out that quickly with the charger plugged in it was probably nearing close to dying already.

I watched a few videos of this repair being done and in one he turned it on and the home screen seemed populated with games. My understanding of the issue is that the chip is connected to a bunch of capacitors and when it goes bad it can cause one of those to short which prevents the power system from working correctly.

I guess probably just put back and forth to pokemon home all the legendaries or so. Just have a thought about this too recently.

Surprised you bought another switch during this without waiting for the results from the repair first. Eh either way, stuff like this is just another example of how rough the hardware for the switch is. I really hope a lot of the hardware mistakes they had here don't repeat on their next console.
