Just got a Synology NAS. Starting with two disks, with backups to Google Drive. So nice to know, short of the end of the world, that my stuff will survive. Next up is a Blu-ray writer for "hard backups". My NAS is also running Home Assistant. There is sooo much one can do with this thing!

You're going to let the end of the world stop you? Once you become a true #datahoarder you won't let little things like that stand in your way. 😅

Love Cloudflare! A few things that might be interesting. A web SDR, Passbolt, Bitwarden self hosted, and Nextcloud.

I know you mentioned S3. Since I don’t have anyone local or any other means of doing a hard off-site backup of my Synology. I would love to see a future video on how to set that up, costs, etc.

I'd love to see more videos like this one! I've heard so much about Docker and this might be the tipping point for me to learn how to use it. Pingvin and PeerTube both sound like awesome tools I'd love to play with

Tailscale and Cloudflare Tunnel are certainly interesting. Nice video as always.

This was fascinating. It reminded me of the recent LTT video featuring certain useful products. I didn't know what to expect when clicking, but I feel like I'm better off having viewed it. Definitely some interesting ideas. The off-site backup with network access sounds especially handy.

For NAS to remote NAS backups via Tailscale, I use Free File Sync with no special settings. (Just be careful to set it as a Mirror copy.) It's dead simple to configure and it's free. I also use the Windows Task Scheduler so that it runs automatically based on the schedule that you create in TS. Of course this does run through the Windows desktop which is not ideal for many reasons.

A few months ago you had a video about RSS so I used some old hardware and installed unRaid. I then installed FreshRSS and AudioBookShelf (ABS). Don’t really use ABS for books, but to listen to podcasts. Then Tailscale to access away from home. Creating web shortcuts on the iPhone is great for these apps. Now I’m looking at HomeAssistant to tie things together. Thanks for the great videos.

@@LonSeidman A very fun rabbit hole (hope the wife thinks so...) The latest item has been Obisidian for note taking and to do lists. I came across it and now use it to document the configs, article clippings, recipes, etc. Still playing with this one.

You didn't mention it so, at risk of saying the obvious, did you know that you Tailscale is available in the Apple app store ?

@@DavidM2002 Yes, I use the Tailscale iPhone app when away from home. Thought I find the battery drains faster. Not sure why but I notice a huge difference on the days when Tailscale is active compared to when it isn't.

Yes, more content about Cloud flare tunneling. Are there bandwidth limitations when using it? What is intended use, and what uses cases that would not work well with Cloudflare tunneling?
@nrnoble
@nrnoble Жыл бұрын
I setup tunnels on my unraid server and it is working well. I have 1gig internet through Comcast. Speed tests through the Cloudflare tunnel I am limited to 40Mb up\down. This limitation may be because I am using the free tier. That speed is good enough for my personal needs. Anyone getting higher speeds on the free tier?

On Synology, VMs will only work on "btrfs" file system, will not work on "ext4" file system and there is no migration, meaning that if you are running ext4 and want to convert to btrfs, you have to "nuke and pave", sadly ... also, "Docker" is changing name in DSM 7.2 to "Container Mgmt"- as you mentioned. Its a far superior implementation than just Docker ... however ... all of the documentation and most Synology vids have referenced Docker and those will become stale and dated.

@@LonSeidmanFile sharing with Synology Drive works through Quick connect, which is how I do it.
@LonSeidman

@@SocialWorkProfessor The only issue with QuickConnect is that it resolves to the host IP - so anyone with the quickconnect link now knows the IP of your device and has access to it after hitting the URL.

Is your mom okay with your backups tying up her Internet connection? Is this kind of like the old days when people used dial up modems over wired telephones? You can't make or take a call when the computer is using the modem?

been meaning to switch from my ugly and cheap WD drive for a long time...the app support on that one is just disgusting! Tried their internal Anti-Virus - It scans empty (100mb filled) 4TB NAS drive forever, then just keeps hanging on 99%....restart helps, but still! Also updating the AV app - same thing on WD...SYNOLOGY has so much better UI, I should've paid a bit more. Is Your Synology 2-bay the best from what they have? I can't seem to find newer models for 2-bay. Some oeople say 'get 4-bay!', but that's the thing! I barely use my NAS...only to store some of my personal documents, some media files and other stuff, sometimes I need to share my files to somebody (also a pain with WD's settings! Opened this feature once and the next day found my NAS flooded with miner viruses, again - WD's Antivirus app was useless...Norton helped - it can actually scan network locations, hello, MalwareBytes). Also love the fact that you can do virtual machine on synology or Edit files right on the drive remotely via the apps. so cool! p.s. could you please show us more videos on Synology apps and things you can do with nas? (besides obvious Plex and such)
