I'm still very much a beginner at this, but we had some great conditions with very pronounced bumps, so figured I'd talk through some of the things I've learned over the past year of DWing. I hope this can help someone break through that next wall. Feel free to point out where I'm wrong, or other alternatives.
Riding Unifoil Progression 170, medium fuse, 13.5 progression tail with 0º shim, and 75 Katana mast.
Board is Portal Nimitz 7'7x19.5x113L, same as Unifoil will be coming out with shortly.

Well done Matt! Nailed the key points on what to look for in the bumps. Such a game of chess out there!

Great video. Haven't seen anything as clear as this around bump reading. I'd especially be interested in seeing more examples of you get into no man's land and how you dig yourself out of it - it seems like a lot of it is recognising the patterns early so you can plan ahead. Your line guides really help with this. Thanks!

Nice video! You could do one 30 mins long and it still wouldn't get boring. That sort of visualisation is really helpful, and that's coming from someone who already does quite a bit of DW. Seeing different types of conditions to my local is really interesting and helps learning through 'virtual riding'. 👍

Thanks dude! Yeah I thought those visuals would help as most of the videos don't have the overlays and it's kinda hard to see what they're pointing out specifically. I'll definitely be making more videos, I have tons of footage. DWing is by far my favorite discipline now.

Thanks Matt that’s so helpful! I’ve saved this to watch over a few more times. I’m just at the point where I’m consistently getting up on foil but struggling to stay in the power zones

Can you expand your thoughts on the efficiency of pump paddling? I know some others such as James Casey profess not paddling, he mentions for instance it often keeps you lower on the mast than ideal for best efficiency and even mentions strapping the paddle to your back. I'm tending to think it is good to get out of holes or over swell where you may not have enough mast height but then just continue pumping only. I still do need more practice in this, I can often be destabilized when I reinitiate paddling.

Of course. For me, just pumping alone works great when I'm at speed, but I'm constantly making mistakes and having to dig out of them, so the pump paddling legit saves me. Pump paddling seems to be about 3x more effective than my pump alone, so it allows me to extend the pumping a lot. For people who are better, this may not be as much of a benefit but it makes all the difference for me. I'm over 40 so that may come into play too lol.

Now that's how you film a DW run. I take it you uesd a 360 camera and then decided which direction to use and what time and rotated it all in post production editing. Would you mind expanding on what rig you are using and how you did it, also what field of view. I've got go pro 7 black which can't do this and considering upgrading...

Thanks! It’s a GoPro Max. They’re old but 360 cams are my preferred option for water sports. I just mount it up near the handle on the paddle with one of the GoPro pole mounts. IMHO the regular GoPros don’t have a wide enough FOV
