My parents back home in Chennai, Tamil Nadu are from the lowest caste possible. My dad studied and moved to Canada because of this caste problem. I am proud of my identity. This caste thing is BS!!

Great convo Durka! I feel like this goes hand in hand with the issue of interracial marriages, which i feel is a problem for many parents in western societies. Part of their argument is that it doesn't help preserve the Tamil language and culture and that kids will be confused as they're raised because their parents follow different religions and/or beliefs. I think it's important to have conversations with our parents about these things, but sometimes it's difficult to get through lol. Anyways, great talk!

I think this issue would only be abolished if we truly looked at each other with empathy. Our Tamil ppl are already scattered across the world, far from their homelands and this caste system is there to further divide us. Because what other purpose does it truly serve, in this time and day. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Durgha I hope more Tamil parents are as open minded as your parents are! Stay blessed! 🙏🧿

Not just caste. Religion too shouldn’t matter. The country you originally belong to shouldn’t matter. Neither should it be something to be proud of. Example: to call yourself a Sri Lankan isn’t something you need to be proud of, to call yourself a Tamil shouldn’t be something to be proud of. None of this should matter. Where there is division, humanity ends. We all belong to the Earth. We believe in some higher power. We talk in a language merely as a means of communication. We all live as humans.

I was born in the UK and never really understood how significant caste was until I had a boyfriend when I was 18 and then my mum asked me what caste he was/ where his parents were from. At the time I was ignorant enough to ask him assuming it was similar to a tribe and not even knowing what caste I was or the different types. He didn't know and he asked his mother who for some reason didn't tell him to break up with me there and then. Caste is a disgusting way of ensuring the the poor stay poor and remain marginalised and the rich are always held as superior. If anyone needs a film that is worth watching with parents. Pariyerum Peruma, Jai Bhim are really good films to start a conversation.
