^ 100% this, yes. I love this series, time absolutely flies by when watching these videos. It's a great format and I love all the "over analyzing"; it is the best "new reader experience" in One Piece on KZbin and I came here from an English professor's takes on One Piece as a first time reader. Not trying to put the English professor down, but Drawk's mom is my favorite "analyst" / first time reader now. 🙂

@@CantusTropus The events of Wano make it super duper clear that timing is everything... but before that in almost every arc Luffy arrives at a place *the day* bad things are going down. If he'd set out even a day later he doesn't save Coby, he never meets Nami. Maybe he meets Zoro still. If he'd gotten to Syrup village a day later, Usopp and Kaya would be dead. If he got to Baratie a day later? Krieg does a lot of harm before Mihawk arrives. And later in the series, how many villains are launching their plan that day? Or various things he catches or dodges super narrowly? (Being vauge to avoid spoilers) Timing is always important.

Your mom's experience with literature is showing - both in how she takes the intentionality Oda does seriously, because I imagine she's been trained to view art as intentional and not random so what takes a lot of manga readers time to take seriously and dismiss as " reading too much into " is exactly what someone with a lit background would do and the reward is there. It's gonna be nuts when and if she catches some of the stuff later that's been foreshadowed even now, so early on. Small note - that same literature mind is funny to see because what tropes manga and comic readers are used to that are subverted by Oda, she's also going to experience, some of her predictions are so interesting because knowing where they go we obviously know what is and isn't accurate, BUt the predictions come from a place that makes total sense using the literature framework. Even her discussing the warlords as being elemental ties into the genre fiction trope of big bads being deity like and those deity pieces are often elemental. Excited to see where your mom goes with this - also, selfishly and probably naturally as the arcs get longer I'd love to see her dedicated to just those arcs in the discussions cause the depth that gets added and the layers and foreshadowing and fulfillment obviously only goes deeper

A lot of theorists get lost in the moment because once you’re week to week everything is really slowed down. Perspective of the greater series tends to be lost. That’s why I love to hear people catch up because those people tend to have a greater view of the overall story. Part of it is also that there are too many of them that have been fans of shonen and anime so they try to connect One Piece to tropes of over series. One of the reasons I love to hear from booktubers or people that don’t know manga or anime very well is that they can see the series without bias and understand the themes or storytelling techniques that Oda uses others might not see. I’ve been loving this series so far, but I’m super excited to see how into the lore your mom is. I can imagine these reviews will only get better.

I'd like to add a bit about Bellemere and her choice of death. There's been criticism that it's promoting a sense of noble suicide but there's more to it than that. Being an ex-marine who knows war, she understood very well the type of character that Arlong was. He was an occupying warlord, this wasn't a random gang; they were ststematic and got a hold of census records to know who everyone was. She also knew that they would need an example in order to prove why they needed to be feared. Then there's the life issues; Bellemere had her arm broken. She would need money for medical expenses and money was a struggle for her. On top of that she would need to get large amounts of money together regularly and reliably in order to buy their lives every month, which isn't something she could realistically do. She couldn't escape and she could expect anyone else to either because they're fishmen and they live on an island; they have naval supremacy. There's no escape, fighting failed and no way for her to get the money together; sure Nami and Nojiko weren't known by the fishmen yet but it would only be a matter of time. Given her position and her training she was the logical choice which she had the bravery and compassion to take. Her death prevented Cocoyashi village becoming what Goza did later on. About the snails, believe it or not it's actually based on a real thing that was investigated. There was a belief that snails who mated made psychic links and if you wiggled one the mate would also wiggle regardless of distance. There were even plans devised to create telecommunication systems from this (more morse code than phone call). Oda's a massive history buff and he takes inspiration from everywhere. I think the trope is less that they're seen as attractive because they were beaten but more because they have proved without doubt their competency in a sea of potentials like buggy's crew or random civilians. It makes an amount of sense; luffy gained her respect and showed that he has the qualities that give him results.

I know a lot of people hate him but he's such a well rounded character when you look at him from the point of view of "yeah, he's a normalass dude in a world full of freaks". He's a smart coward with a steel resolve when it counts. My fave moments with him are always him knowing he's weaker, and worrying he's useless, but he still tries anyways. (even with Wano and things are horribly on fire and he shoots a watering plant to try and put the flames out, but it just catches on fire and he just yells I HAD TO TRY SOMETHING! even though he knew it wouldn't do anything. he still tries!)

The thing I love most about luffys fights is that he never outright kills his opponents. He instead makes SURE that he manages to absolutely crush their dreams. He uses his emotional intelligence to find out how to maximally harm them. Luffys fights are always clashes of ideals, not just about the actual fighting. And just because I'm on the theme, zoros fights are always raw tests of skill and mettle and technique, sanjis are tests of resolve usually in the face of some sort of major setback or trickery, usopps are tests of courage and trickery, and Namis are a bit harder to pin down but she usually serves as a moral glue to the crew and incorporates themes of trickery and resolve but there is also sometimes a theme of protecting others through her victory. Nami and sanji and usopp also usually have "fights" that don't involve violence but rather morals/ideals/arguments

For information, the name of Nami’s adoptive mother comes from our French word for saying « mother in law » : Belle-mère. Literally translated into English, it means « beautiful mother ». The same goes for a father in law : beau-père (beautiful father) or brother and sister in law : beau-frère and belle-sœur (like Nojiko). Normally we use it to qualify the family of the person you or one of your parents married, someone to which you are related by law but not by blood. So it’s very befitting in Nami’s story case of an adoptive mother. In France Nami’s mother’s name in OP is written « Belmer » but the prononciation stays the same as the original word Belle-mère : Belle is pronounced like the English « bell » word (final « e » is silent), and for mère the « è » sound is exactly the same as the « e » in « bell », with an hard « r » and once again a silent final « e » (or like the word « bear » starting with a « m » instead of « b »). Also, I don’t know if Oda knew that but in French the words « mère »(mother) and « mer »(the sea) sound exactly the same. So Belmer could also be interpreted as « beautiful sea », which is also befitting for a former marine soldier.

When Zoro beat his crewmates Arlong was visibly worried about them. And the fact that he tends to get EXTREMELY mad at humans out of nowhere that even his crew have to hold him back. All the bad stuff Arlong did serves to make you think that's all he is, but him caring about his crew and being visibly worried when they get hurt is something that really stands out for his character. Makes you stop a a bit and re-read to make sure what you just saw was real. Would love to know what your mom thinks of this aspect of Arlong, especially since we know it will be important in the near future.

I’m the last vid you mentioned that merphy Napier was your favourite watch along for one piece, and her series is fantastic. Despite that I think I like this more. Drawk mom picks up on so many themes and ideas I had never considered.

You said there is a three hours stream. One Piece fans put up with Tekkings who put like hour plus vid that seemingly a lot of fillers. And those Reverie stream that like 10 hours plus. Maybe post both. A more concise vid, and a longer uncut vid hmm. But it is your channel and you know the stats behind your vids than other. So you are the main driver. Hope this channel be super successful.

I freaking love that explanation she used. How we're all Sherlock Holmes trying to figure out the clues to this adventure. Points for mom BIG W for that analogy on its own 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Oda does like playing with his audience.

The thing with the pinwheel and the grave is that it's something that made Nami laugh as a child, so I agree with the idea that it's a reminder of simpler times. Nami putting both the pinwheel and the tangerine on her as a tattoo is basically a way to show how she thinks of both as their parental figures. But I never thought about why Genzo would leave the pinwheel at the grave, apart from showing him moving on with his life knowing that Nami was safe now. Perhaps it's also a way to make the grave more peaceful.

Lol, just watched the first video this morning, checked the channel for more and was ahh, I'm sure more will come out eventually. Wasn't expecting the same day I found the video/channel lol. I wish there were some scenes put in the video as well when something specific is referenced but I'm pretty sure all of us here have probably watched/read One Piece more than once. Plus you're also drawing. I like guessing what you're drawing before I know what it is lol.

The thing about Usopp is that I never expected him to "stop" being Usopp. Since his dream is to become a brave warrior of the sea, obviously he's not gonna acheive his dream before the rest do. He's gonna stay cowardly and afraid until we reach the end and everyone achieves their dreams.

Firstly, cherish your mom. She’s so awesome. The delight in her voice as she talks about One Piece brings me so much joy. I appreciate how the diverse individuals who have joined the crew mirror the dynamic of the manga. Gradually, Oda is crafting this world to align more closely with his vision. Usopp making the list is what I was waiting for. I cant wait till she gets to Skypiea. I wonder if she catches anything that everyone else has missed.

Okay, so my prediction is that Ussop is going to climb the coolness ladder. He's not always front and center, but he's there, slowly moving towards what he is now. If you know you know. Also, i love the warlord predictions. They're so.... Interesting.
