My ball python, Lucina, is my video gaming companion. She loves when I wear a hoody because she smuggles her body into my hood and brings her head out to my shoulder and loves chin rubs and occasionally lets me boop the snoot. Thankfully I didn’t ever step into herping blind because the very first night I took her home I binge watched YOU! We learn from other people’s mistakes, so thank you for being public and sharing your stories and experience!

If your reptile ever gets adhesive like tape stuck on them, gently rub coconut oil, cooking oil, or really any oil on them, and carefully peel it off while massaging the oil in. I once had to fix a crappy sliding screen that my cats had broken from sitting on the top. I used tape. One night, the bottom peice of tape kinda just hung down, and I heard rustling. I quickly jumped out of bed to find my baby corn snake stretched out the entire length of the tape struggling to get free. My parents and I cut off the tape, and took it out to the kitchen, at 3am. We soaked him for a while, and my dad got the idea to use coconut oil. He rubbed it all over my snake, and eventually was able to get it all unstuck. My snake ended up being just fine, I got a new and stronger top once I had some money. I've seen many stories where te same thing happened, something broke a screen top, they fixed it with tape, and the snake got stuck, but many actually lost scales and skin. If this happens, definitely reach for the oil.

I had a similar experience... my first day of having my ball python. There had been a pretty significant crack in the corner, near the top. I had taped it, and then used a hot glue gun to "seal" the edges. I had the tank set up for about a week before I got her, and apparently, the small day light I used (just for looks) was putting off enough heat to soften the glue and weaken the adhesive. Morning after I got her was spent crying in a bathtub, frantically rubbing her down with vegetable oil. It's a slow process, but it got duct tap off of her and she only lost like two scales... oil is the way to go if something like that happens. She's all good and happy 4 years later so I don't think I scarred her for life haha
@sabzillagorilla
@sabzillagorilla 6 жыл бұрын
Sierra Shumate yeah it does take patience, but oil does work well. I've heard stories from people where it actually ripped off entire sections and chunks of scales. My snake managed to not damage any scales at all, but he had some messed up sheds for a couple months. Pretty traumatic stuff, no matter if the snake is fine or not

Today my ball python stayed in my hoodie pocket with his tale and head poked out. He's almost 4 feet which is concerning because he was about 1 foot not even when I got him just hatched and he just started to eat regularly for long enough. It's been 10 months, they said he was big for his age. I'm fine with that though, he's so good with kids and let's me pet his head and is so happy and healthy. One day he will grow big enough that I can ride on his back and we will take over the planet one Canadian province at a time, that is if he will go in the grass for once in his life and not wrap around my finger with his tale and just sit there. He's a great dude 10/10 best in the west 10/10 survived so far named Madesi thanks for reading.

I think it's bold of you to keep up your old videos. They show that you have no problem with learning and showing people that learning is all part of the process of owning animals. I know tons of carers who hide their mistakes and want to appear all-knowing and infallible. We all learn from one another. Your attitude is refreshing.

I got my ball python max about 4 months ago. He had mites as well and with your treatment, he's mite free and back into his normal home. Honestly I just bought a big 40 gal plastic container for like $12 at target. Plastic holds humidity better anyways... I did some mods, cut some holes and have a humidity regulator (basically a mesh I cover more or less depending on if I need to up or down the humidity). If you're worried about the snake needing more space, i'd say go for something like that. Maybe it's not the best looking but it definitely does the job!

I got my first snake yesterday. She is a BP that looks just like yours. She's in a 40 gallon tank with plenty of hides and toys and a big bowl of water to soak in. I'll have to buy her a thermostat, I didn't know it was needed! I only have the sticky thermometer thingy. She's going to be moved into a 75 gallon tank in a couple of months too. Edit: I now have a thermostat in her 75 gallon tank. She uses up every inch of it, and always asks to be taken out into bigger spaces lol. But I think a 75 gallon will be the last upgrade, I think it's probably big enough for the rest of her life, unless she grows to be 6 feet

Midnight Mint She is a female. Females can grow to be 6 feet long. A snake should be able to stretch completely when in a tank without needing to wrap around the tank. Her tank may have to be 5-6 feet long. Her current tank is 3 feet long, which she is quickly outgrowing, so a 75 gallon will work since it's 4 feet long. I'm going to add lots and lots of hides and rocks and stuff so she doesn't get stressed

The moral to your story is a good one.... You never stop learning and you should be constantly updating your research over the years and be open to learning new things. I've talked to people who believe what they believe no matter how well you prove them wrong. The latest was someone on Facebook who emphatically believes that you don't need a thermostat and that it's just a ploy for you to spend more money. I couldn't convince them otherwise. Love your vids and what Emerald Scales is doing.

Thank you for sharing your story because this is so common for beginners to make mistakes with ball python husbandry especially when there is so much misinformation and conflicting opinions out there. Nobody is perfect with their pets all the time and I think it's so important to share that story with people because you have to start somewhere. You are going to make mistakes and that's okay as long as you care for the animal and continue to educate yourself and do better.

Just got my first snake, and my first Ball Python and immediately jumped into super research mode to make sure i'm doing the best I can for my new Dobby (yes Dobby, he came in a bag that looked like a sock, therefore he got his sock and is now a free snake. {hubby has a sense of humor}) I went through sites and sites and stuff and breeders and etc etc, and after all that, I have found you to be the most informative through trial and error and education and research for a PET python. you are doing a great job and I really REALLY appreciate your input. and people may agree or disagree with some of your advice and research, but you do a great job in covering pros and cons, which things you prefer vs what others prefer etc. I think out of everything I've seen and read I've leaned toward your advice on most everything thus far. You're an awesome kid! (funny enough I feel you're more mature and educated than a lot of these "professional breeders" I've watched.. which is awesome for you, and really kinda sad for the 40 some year old breeder dude. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING THIS OUT THERE!!! I went though almost the same exact thing when I first got my ball python. It's hard and I was young and only knew to do what my mom told me to do. It's really discouraging to see most reptile youtubers always saying that you shouldn't get reptiles and going on long winded rants about what horrible pet owners do and it made me feel so awful. I will always have a lot of guilt and shame for not knowing any better before. But now I can say I learned a lot and will always have peak care for my reptiles in the future. Nobody's perfect. I'm so glad that you can admit your faults and be real with your audience unlike a lot of other reptile youtubers/owners who act like they're perfect and they made no mistakes while owning reptiles and shame people for making mistakes. lol seeing that video of you as a little kid getting Sunny, it makes me think of what my son might be like one day. I hope he loves reptiles as much as you do. When it's your own kid, I imagine a parent who also loves reptiles would be so fugging proud

Yea same with my BP some article I read said it didnt needs heat lights or mats. So I didnt use hers often. I mostly used them for my baby chickens at the time. I watched Snake Discovery And GoHerping alot then realized my mistakes. .^.

The air is so wet and sticky, I feel like i'm swimming and it makes the heat so much worse >~< 4 years later edit: i was a strange child. Anyway yeah very humid and gross down here

Thank you for posting this. As a beginner I have made so many mistakes…and am still correcting them. I think that as long as you take your snakes seriously, and continue to educate and your heart is in it and you do not neglect…AND it also helps to have a good support system. I found a great small non chain reptile business that has been SO helpful. I also keep in touch with the breeder of my second ball ( I have 2) and he is also very helpful. I am going to start logs on both snakes and I thank you for that tip. Thanks for your channel I have learned SO much from you and I appreciate you. 😊

My best tip for ball python care is hygrometer from a cigar shop that you can salt test and calibrate so its dead accurate. My little buddy loves dollar store containers with an entry hole cut in them. You can use light dimmers and a temp gun to get his under tank heaters dialed in too. In winter put a damp towel over half the cage and change it out every few days. So far so good
