Update: after this video got traction online, the Tesla service center took another look at my car, and found that the rear drive unit needed to be replaced. If it weren’t for my platform, tesla would never have found it and would have continued to blame me for everything & FORCED me to take back an unsafe car. I still don’t want the car and am trying to get them to simply take it back.

Don't let this incident ruin the experience for you. You bought this as a treat for yourself and you should be happy. People break down in the fast lane all the time in regular cars. It's a good car. They're replacing the faulty components so you won't have this problem again. It's traumatizing for sure but you shouldn't get rid of the car because of it. It's a Tesla! You can't get any cooler than that.

It was only Your third trip with the car, so i think the Battery Management System (BMS) was not yet calibrated. If it is not calibrated, how much You have left in the battery is not correct. This combined with the defect motor may have caused the stop.

I've worked in a dealership as a technician in Santa Monica for years. For this kind of problem, it's quite serious. The problem is that you can only start the "lemon law" process after a 3rd attempted repair for the same issue. A dealer will only repair something if it's a verified problem. Intermittent problems don't get parts thrown at it in hopes of getting a repair. While this sucks, I would recommend getting in touch with a lemon law lawyer. The problem with customer support is that they don't have the technical knowledge & just follow a script w/o the ability to think outside of the box. Nightmare scenario. Glad to hear you weren't injured. Also make a complaint to the nhtsa or iihs with the same documentation of the estimated range & battery percentage.

I had a Model 3 for two years and experienced a similar issue. Luckily it didn’t happen while I was driving, but the car gave me strange error messages and refused to move after I had parked it. This happened twice in two years. The first time Tesla told me it was simply a “bug” that could be fixed by doing a hard reset. I was skeptical, but did the reset and the issue appeared to be gone. Eventually, on vacation with my family, it happened again. We were stuck in a parking lot with my car spitting out error messages and refusing to move. That’s when I lost patience for Tesla. They were willing to put people in danger, or at the very least leave them stranded, by ignoring serious issues with their cars. After that vacation I ditched my Model 3 and bought a Jaguar I-Pace instead. Despite Jaguar’s poor reputation for reliability, I have had zero issues in over a year. Not to mention they include three years of roadside assistance in the event of a breakdown or even a flat tire. I can call them by simply pressing an SOS button in the car. This has given me reassurance that me and my family will be safe while traveling. Which was important after all the anxiety my previous Model 3 had given me. I honestly believe Tesla’s days are numbered unless they begin prioritizing customer service and quality control. I’m not sure who would feel confident buying a car that may leave you stranded, without any support from the manufacturer.

Intermittent issues are annoying although Tesla should try to check the bugs. It appears that they don't try to fix the problems. They think like a software company. Basically a reset or a reboot will solve many problems. There are jokes about this. With cars that doesn't work.

The explanation to only use the battery percentage and not the mileage is hilarious. So they're literally telling you that one of the main features of the car is useless. Sounds like they're fishing for excuses since they either (1) Don't know what the real problem is or (2) Know what the problem is and don't want to acknowledge it due to potential cost to Tesla. Either way they're putting you in a terrible spot.

Their excuse is nonsense. The car will throw error codes over and over and over again plus warning after warning before running out of Battery. Those error codes get logged and the service center would see them. They are making stuff up

That whole statement was foolish. She has video evidence that the battery wasn’t anywhere near empty. You can see the battery icon is around at least 40-45% and the navigation is saying she’ll arrive at her destination in 30 miles with 39%. Changing the display from miles to percentage wouldn’t have changed that. The person she’s talking to simply has no idea what they’re talking about and is just rattling off excuses.

It’s very likely that the reason you received your car MUCH earlier than your estimated date is because this vehicle was a reject, and/or had insufficient repairs done to it in the past. Meaning, I’m this case, she unfortunately received a lemon. It happens with every company unfortunately, but it sucks that it was a new vehicle. I have a Tesla and the few times I’ve been servicing have been a positive experience, but it’s important to hear from the negatives as well.

I’ve been a paramedic firefighter going on 12 years now. For as long as I’ve been in, we’ve had manual operated stretchers. A few years ago, to aid in the mission of saving our backs, the county converted all stretchers to automatic ones. As great as it has been, you wouldn’t believe the amount of times they malfunction. And it’s always at the worst time too. I’m all for the advancement of technology but sometimes I wonder if we just over due it. I have a friend who has had problems from day 1. When it rains, the “trunk” fills with water. Tesla said it’s been fixed but clearly it has not. He has taken it back 3 times. Most of the body panel gaps are all different sizes. KZbin actually has videos showing them. The first time he washed it and went to dry it, the paint scratched. The body shop he took it to had to buff the swirl marks out and said Tesla doesn’t use enough paint and this happens a lot. It’s a nice car but it’s not worth the problems so he will be trading it in for another car. Have you checked to see if California has a lemon law? I’m so tired of dealerships trying to make ladies seem like idiots!

I listened to your service advisors explanation and it made absolutely zero sense but she gave it so convincingly and quick that it tells me this is not an isolated issue with just your vehicle. Service advisors don't get this polished in their explanations unless it's something they deal with on a daily basis and that's bad news for your purchase unfortunately. I spent over 22 years in the auto industry so I have some experience with this. Luckily in California the consumers have more rights but the lemon law is a major pain in the butt to go through. Usually as long as the dealer is acting in good faith to make repairs and furnishing you a replacement vehicle while it's in the shop your options for recourse are slim. There should be trouble codes being thrown that they can access and if not that's worrisome as well.

As a computer technician with a background in electronics, this is not a state of charge issue. You are absolutely correct on that. (Edit: Tesla's are equipped with smart Battery Management Systems. Which actively monitor the amps in and amps out, keeping a sort of ledger in the process. This same data feeds the percentage algorithm, and is also one of the data points fed into the miles left estimation. The service center reps have no fricking clue what they're doing and may actually get someone killed) The software update, maybe. I guess if there is a software issue in the computer which controls the drivetrain, it could cause something like this. But even then that wouldn't be definitive. If I was the service manager at that location I would not have been comfortable offering the car back after just charging and updating it. At the very least the logs should be analyzed by a competent professional. One of the primary causes I could see is an intermittent contact between the motor controller and the motor itself. That explains the sudden stop, the jarring sensation when it quit (likely a 'rolling' test pulse to see if communication can be reestablished), and also the increased battery discharge when it was sitting (the test pulses while parked will just drain the battery into its parking brake). Part of me is thinking if they tore the thing apart and looked at it there is likely debris over one of the connections, or a burnt out trace on the board of the controller or the data pins of the motor. But that would be a costly inspection. Letting it sit for that long likely let it come down to a working temperature. It may malfunction again after another decent trip. You're smart to try to get rid of it. I wouldn't want it either. Even though I was in a similar situation when a gas-powered F-150 did essentially the same thing, it did allow an idle-mode for a bit. Still was dangerous for the 45 seconds it took me to get to a safe spot to pull over though as it quit right after a blind corner. That problem was also an electronic issues. The throttle bodies on that vintage of 3.5l NA engines had a common fault. The contacts on the TPS pins were prone to burning up and suddenly loosing contact in certain temps.

As a Tesla owner and working in a Tesla repaire center. What the lady in the service center told you is 100% bull 💩. At the end of the day, Tesla is more like a computer than a car, at least it's how I view it. It can just stopped working without warning or some wire went wrong and without a full disassemble , you can't even tell what went wrong. The service center is so overloaded, they wouldn't even bother to do a simple diagnostic so let alone a full disassemble. I am so sorry for the situation and I'm so glad you are okay!!

Dr. Dana, I am so sorry this happened to you. I also have a Tesla. I don't know what happened to your car here. The pictures of your screen look like you had about half of your battery left when it stopped. Even though you have it on miles and not percentage the battery image next to the miles is pretty accurate to the percentage. When it goes below 20% it turns from grey to orange, when it goes below 10% it turns to red. From all that I can see you did not run out of battery. Tesla Service has been one of the weak points in the company unfortunately. According to Musk's words the Tesla team is putting a lot of energy to improve that. Obviously, it is not there yet. I hope for a good outcome here for you.

@@FootDocDana I also have a Model 3. I had an issue a couple of months back where I walked out to my car to grab my wallet and couldn’t get in. I thought it may have been an issue with charging, etc. I had to have my Tesla dragged out of my garage by a wrecker. They brought it to the Tesla service center here in Idaho and found the main computer powered down. They told me it was because of a USB that I was using which I believe is completely wrong. They told me to buy the Tesla USB which doesn’t work at all now. It’s so frustrating to hear that their “resolution” is essentially gaslighting us to believe it is something we did when it definitely isn’t.

Totally understand your frustration. I was in an accident in my model 3, where autopilot couldn't pick a lane, swerved twice and hydroplaned, totalling the car. Tesla service was terrible, I had much the same experience as you. Do not hold your breath on getting a response from them. Fortunately for me, I let my insurance sort it out and now I am driving a Subaru. So long Telsa, your customer service is the worst.

Sorry to hear your experience. This is super frustrating and totally not your fault. Tesla really needs to improve their customer service. It looks like one of the cells went bad which allowed your cells to go out of balance. Tesla should fix it for you. They should also provide you a loaner until this is done. Check lemon laws in your state for car returns. It most likely cannot be returned.

Silly explanation about battery percentage from Tesla. Sentry Mode is automatically disabled at 20% battery, so you had much more than 20% when the car suddenly stopped. You shouldn't use the range meter to determine if no charge stops are needed, but if it says that there are miles left the battery percentage is well above 0%.

There is a faulty battery in your car. Its an intermitent fault that makes the voltage fluctuate and therefor it shuts. Most likely the reason for you to get the car so soon is someone else returned it earlier because of problems. The worst thing is that tesla never takes blame for anything. They only have explanations.

Im so sorry this happened to you! Glad you got out safe!! I actually work for Tesla but left after 4 months bc of management issues. But I totally understand what customers like you feel especially when something bad surprisingly happened and Tesla doesn’t even want to help. Just three days ago I went to a supercharger in Pasadena California and as I rolled up to the supercharger, something crazy happened. A couple super charging, their cable was somehow punctured, and a bunch of smoke came out of the super charging cable, and it actually damaged their car in someway, unable to drive, low voltage battery dead. They tried calling Tesla and AAA, and they wouldn’t even believe them as to what happened and didn’t even send a tow truck driver. I ended up helping them because I felt so bad, but also mad at the company. I do admit, the company has so many loopholes and gray area stuff that you wouldn’t expect from a company. And there were so many short cuts that they made. They are a smaller company and they are trying to get better but in terms of management and just overall help it’s nowhere near what other competitors offer right now. this is a rare occasion and super scary, and I totally understand and it shouldn’t happen to anyone. Also that lady who talked to you about range is complete bs. She doesn’t know wth she is talking about and is literally making stuff shes doesn’t know about. Our family has been a tesla owner for about 4 years now and after working for the company i can reassure you that makes 0 sense whatsoever. Clearly we can see you still have over 130 miles of range what I would wildly guess is that if your screen is perfectly fine there’s no warning lights then as a service technician the first thing I would do is put the car in service mode and see the onboard computer diagnostic system to see if there’s any faults and check the drivetrain computer. This makes me really frustrated and I don’t stand by this kind of behavior. Feel free to reach out to me and I can call a few friends that can hopefully resolve this issue and give more helpful information for you. Best of luck!

I had the same experience a few days ago. It's only been 10 days since I bought a Tesla model X. Current mileage of my car is 150. While driving, the rear of the vehicle vibrated violently with a strange noise. Immediately, a warning message appeared on the Tesla's screen, and it stopped in the middle of the road and did not move after that. The car is currently towed and in the process of being repaired. In fact, I was very very excited before I bought a Tesla, and I was soooooo happy to drive my Tesla, but now I'm afraid to drive that Tesla again. I don't want to drive down the highway with my family in that car. First of all, I want to return my car, as it has only driven 150 miles. Is it possible? I've been searching the internet and youtube for days, but I still don't know what to do.
