I bought one when they first came out 2005....i found it great for storing tons of samples on compact flash but the editing was too tedious for my flow...i stuck with my mpc 2000 back then ...now the MPC Live is more of what I had hoped for when I bought the 500. I've got one. It's a competent beat machine. Sounds good and can do most anything other MPCs of the era could. That damn two line LCD screen and the menu diving can be very slow and frustrating at times but it's all there if you give it some patience. Been working on a beat tape using only this machine just for the hell of it.

I’ve seen these at $150 - 200 if you can be patient. I just picked up a SP-404sx due to the price drop on the second hand market, mainly because I wanted something to be able to carry around and I think it’s kinda superior for portable beatmaking because it’s so immediate . Honestly though, I think the sequencer and the ability to use it with external gear makes the 500 more useful with other gear

The 500's pads are definitely lacking. I purchased some fat pads from MPCStuff, and now they're working great. The slider is another dope feature of the 500. Chopping on this thing really sucks though. You are better off chopping your samples on a computer or another device. Transferring files via USB is very slow. If you have an MPC 500, 1000, or 2500, I recommend the MPC Maid software that allows you to construct and edit programs and then transfer to the MPC. The workflow is faster that way. There are plenty of 500 tutorials on KZbin, and MPCStuff has the recommended Beat Making on the MPC 500 ebook.

Cut some cardboard to the size of the battery area as if you hit the pads hard it can dislodge the batteries and restart the MPC500. The cardboard will make the batteries stay snug in the compartment. You are right about if you use it regularly then the small screen and menu diving aren't an issue as you really do get fast on it. Using the filter on a sample and putting it on different pads to give the effect of opening the filter at different stages is a good one and using the slider to simulate scratching works pretty well on the 500. The EQ and compression on the master also gives the sound it's final sheen. I love my 2000XL for use in my main studio but once I am on the road or away from home the 500 is so good it's kept me away from getting a Live or a One.

Its an interesting device. When it appeared back around 2008 ( or whatever year it was ) it was designed with the idea that you make a quick musical footnote at someone elses studio or collab or jam etc and then bring it back to the your studio and flesh out the project by off loading the samples and project files into the MPC2500 or MPC5000 etc and finish off the beat in that device. Thats what Akai wanted to encourage as regards the portability. Then again, thats not mandatory as regards the above, IT IS an instrument at the end of the day and you could use it for anything and people make use of it in different ways. Some say its an Akai S2000 repackaged into an MPC style shell. I used to own one, but sold it for an MPC2500 that was second hand for the same price back around 2009ish. Its a nice device, could do with a bigger screen as he says in the vid. It was pricey back when it was released too.

Its way more powerful as a sequencer compared to other popular fare like KO 33 or the SP 404 (I use them too, they have their strong points). Midi level step edit is very good too, especially for phrase triggers and single shot beats, fast and precise. Q link can be easily used to simulate turntablism as well as pitch and filter sweeps. Chopping can be done creatively as many KZbin videos have explained over the years and even the SP 404 pad hold looping can be done as well when absolutely needed. Takes midi input. Practically unlimited sequences each with their own length and tempo and 48 separate tracks each can be chained to create any song. Pattern oriented workflow although a single sequence can be used in lieu of a DAW like linear workflow. Velocity sensitive pads which KO 33 and SP do not have, beats are instantly more expressive. Pads are a bit stiff however I used two fingers each hand and it balances out the finger pressure to make beats come out as expected. Also the compressor setting on Master is a key ingredient in pad sensitivity for final output even while composing patterns and recording them, so setting the compressor on 5:1 ratio with threshold of -20 instantly makes the drums more tight and balanced with a one to one correlation while banging the pads. Mouseless and keyboardless workflow instantly makes it my favourite. I used to be a Reason and Ableton fanatic until I got finally sick and tired of the mouse based workflow, nothing can be done without the mouse which is really shit after a while. I came from Emagic logic and was enamored by the piano roll paradigm since 1997 until it dawned on me that this is just another metaphor created by developers mimicking piano rolls of yester years including the sheet music movement left to right while an actual piano roll would go top to bottom like a book. It is just a compromise and design decision, nothing too special really. Just a way to visualize midi events and convert them to a pictoral view for visual feedback using software objects. That is when I stopped being enamored by this one paradigm and started exploring which ones actually work for me and for the music I am making. MPC gets it right with streamlining music performance and composition in the same platform without an overt focus on programming which also can be done no doubt, with performance based compositions with a foundation on groove taking the front row and VIP seating. Between fingers banging out beats and chopping samples and sampling live turntables and guitar and Rhodes over useing a mouse I know which one to prefer any day. My MPC 500 is the go to groove machine for drum beds and live gritty sampling sessions.

The sounds are recorded and play at eighty per cent volume. You can control the volume on each sound on the mixer page and you can add effects to the sounds to enhance them. Once you have built your beat you can also add compression and EQ to the final stereo mix before you export it from the MPC500. If you are exporting stems I recommend export everything at one hundred per cent volume to each channel and controlling the sound levels and effects for the mix from your DAW instead. Hope this helps

Great video! I notice you're bouncing samples from your other samplers. I might start doing this too. Chopping phrases on my 1000 is such a chore sometimes.

I mean, each person will have an opinion but if it cuts time and headaches I am taking the shortcut.

I sample from my samplers too 😂. I thought it was redundant at first but it does help live performances to bounce between them

Hey Marlow!!! I have question for you about for you! Does the size of the wav. file matter when saving samples from the computer to the MPC500? I've tried chopping up sampling in a software program called Audacity. Then I would save them in a folder on a Compact Flash Card with 4 gigabytes. But whenever I try loading up those files into the MPC. The wont all load. I find that strange. Was it something I did wrong?

Guys, I'm struggling with MIDI sync on it, I know they work but I have issue in my settings somewhere. Can some one help me with it ? I've looked at all english videos on connecting MPC500 to a keyboard, and I still didn't manage to do so.

I'm want to make a beat so bad, how do I start beat making? Anyone please send me advice, I don't know where to start. I figure Marlow and cookin soul are a good start but what programs do I need.?

Buy a PO-33 by teenage engineering. It's cheap (90$) and it's the easier way to start and have an OK beat quickly.

TheLugdunum69 i second this, po-33 knock out is a great gateway sampler and intro to beatmaking

@The 1 you should consider getting the free Akai MPC Beats Software. It's pretty much all you need to start making beats and it's 100% free. Just use your keyboard and mouse.

For beginners i would say use a daw and an MPK or midi controller. Bandlab, fruity loops whatever

It sucks impc pro 2 app paired with the mpc element is far above this machine I was mad that I bought this machine because my iPad out preformed it . Sampling and chopping is effortlessly on the impc pro 2 app and you can turn KZbin videos into mp3 and have a limitless sampling collection.
