My Thoughts on Dragon's Dogma 2 MTX

I know Ratatoskr & FightinCowboy have confirmed their review copies came with the paid DLC documention. I also know Asmongold reacted to the situation. I stand by what I said in the video. I didn't know. My Review copy only included Embargo Details (which for those who don't know, this is how much I'm allowed to record, which parts I can't record because of spoilers, and when I'm allowed to talk about it). It didn't include any information about Paid DLC, I know this because I looked at my e-mail several times yesterday specifically looking for this information that I could have overlooked. Except I didn't overlook it, it simply wasn't there. Capcom like most publishers has a US branch and an EU branch, Review codes are sent by different offices. If you think I'm a liar, you're entitled to that opinion. I'm not changing my stance, because I'm not going to lie to appease a mob. And one more thing, I stand by everything I said in my review and preview coverage too. I like the game, I think it's awesome and I'm going to keep playing it, feel free to crucify me over that too. That's what people don't understand this is all a test how far they can go. A couple years ago Capcom was selling decorations on MHW everyone excused it. Now they're selling you the ability to change the way your character looks. Can't make a new character in DD2? Hmmmmm, we were able to in DD1. It would not surprise me if they were planning on selling us multiple save files. 1.99$ per new game save file 😂😂😂 It's obvious in plain sight this is a test to see what they can squeeze out of the players and they will keep pushing and pushing if people keep excusing it. I played DD2 for about an hour and a half and refunded. The game is fine solid more like DD1.5 then DD2 nothing really revolutionary still choppy and janky but a fine game that I woulda played through and enjoyed. But off pure principle I'm not gonna support scummy practices.

On the "skill checked by the game" aspect for wakestones - id like to add that wakestones can be used to rescue NPC and sometimes NPC die offscreen before the quest to save them even pops which i feel is a pretty major incentive to spend.

100% agree that these micro-transations were not part of the developer team's vision. I don't know what 'pay-to-win' really means in a single-player player game, other than: making the game slightly easier? Saving you grinding time? Finishing the game slightly faster? Is that "winning" ? Also if someone really wants to get substantial advantages and truly break the game, there are free and easy ways to do this with 'trainer' programs.

I don’t know if anyone remembers, but there was an interview with the RE dev team where they mentioned that the corporate side of capcom wanted to turn RE7 into a live-service type game and the director/producer was like “NO”. Saved RE7’s ass with that decision, but the interview got removed from yt for obvious reasons. It’s unfortunate that Itsuno couldn’t do the same for DD2

​@@serapheid3669 I think Itsuno's style has been more of "ok you can have the MTX, I'll balance the game so that it doesn't matter," probably 'cause his projects aren't as big name as RE. DMC5 basically showered us with Red Orb (currency) and Gold Orb (a revive), and he made an entire weapon around giving you more Red Orbs. I feel this is also true in DD2, where RC is very easy to get just by playing normally, and Wakestones are so easy to get compared to the first game.

There is one scenario where I think it would be beneficial: if you can purchase different aspects of the game separately. In SWTOR when it first went MTX, a standard subscription was $15/month, but you could spend $5/month for just access to raiding, $5/month to for just access to PvP, and I believe $5/month to have open all to all PvE quest lines. So if you only wanted to PvP, you could spend just $5/month instead of the normal subscription. The PvE side may have been a little more complicated and of course the system overall had a lot more MTX than just that, but regardless, this sort of separately purchased components is actually beneficial to players. Other than that one example in SWTOR (which has since been ruined), I've never seen it done that way.

it honestly ridiculous how content creators who played the game and enjoyed it have been harassed for something they had no clue was going to happen neither NEEDED mtx for their experience when they did their first playthrough. i know everyone has different opinions on mtx but if the game wasn't designed off mtx, not an issue to begin with. games notoriously have mtx in different forms for the past decade, we have seen way worse than DD2's situation. but i think everyone has to realize that these are businesses that are trying to create profit somehow especially in a time where video games are expensive to create and i'm not saying that we should accept that at this point.. but it's a situation to not stress out about when companies will keep doing this. its the matter what's the less problematic situation which is mtx just being there as a service without affecting the game rather the game being solely designed for players to buy mtx.

First off, I want to thank you for the full transparency about the situation. Secondly, in case you don't know, a few other channels (namely Rat and Cowboy) have claimed that the MTX were in the press-releases they received, and implied that this was the case for everyone. So that could also contribute to why people are assuming that you knew as well. To be blunt, even if you did know ahead of time, I don't think the responsibility is in your hands to inform the gamers. This is on Capcom.

If you're going to be a full time streamer and reviewer of games who accepts preview copies from the developers and gets documentation that indicates that something like mtx is in the game, then it very much part of your job to include that information in the review you release. Honest mistakes happen. The fact that they happened honestly doesn't change the fact that they're mistakes.

The problem is these micro transactions were added because they know it will provide revenue. They wouldn't waste their time if it didn't. Items included in the shop EFFECT GAMEPLAY. So without inside knowledge there is no way for the consumer to know if the game was made worse or with more grind for the intention of making people want to buy these GAME EFFECTING ITEMS. It's simple p2w, but because it's cheap and bad value it's somehow okay in many people's eyes.... You should still never support these practices because they will continue to push for more in the future.

Yeah the mtx are needless and weird instead of just blatantly scummy. There's a lot of people just kind of making shit up to be mad at especially around fast-travel. There's legitimate reasons to be upset at this stuff creeping in to every major game release and while it's really not that bad from a consumer stand point *yet* it's till a problem, and I can kind of understand why people think it is. What I don't like is misinformation about the nature of the microtransactions, whether downplaying them or making them seem worse than they actually are. You know, despite all those MT's, performance issues I think Dragons Dogma 2 is.... boring to play. 1. Backtracking is painful. Fighting same goblins and listening to SAME BANTER between Pawns gets old quickly. 2. Combat without Lock On is clumsy. Archer doesn't have a dodge option so when enemy hits you in the back he will FINISH the combo on your character. DD1 had daggers and you could always dodge out of the way. Getting STUN LOCKED is just painful and it feels like we have no power over combat in certain situations. 3. Some quests are just ridicilous. I would have never guessed that I had to "HOLD" a nun in order to trigger a cutscene ( not gonna spoil more ). 4. Economy = GRIND. 5. Game was designed to waste your time. 6. So many Treasure chests that contain 1 item and its often low amount of gold or some potion that I can craft from herbs... What's the point of going out of my way just to get "useless" items... Since my pawns will heal me and items do not recover HP past the incurred damage.... 7. Enemy A.I is just dumb. I Had trolls glitched, wolves running in circles, Pawns grouped together and then literally EATING all the blast from a STONE GOLEM ( THEY HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO MOVE out of the way but nope.... ) 8. They were talking about relationships and how important they are.... but honestly it's just fetch quests and bloody escort missions! Not much in terms of romance, extra dialogue or even deepen Main Pawn bond... 9. All the SPECIAL EFFECTS are so painful to watch. Physically it hurts my eyes watch MAGIC in this game. Wish there was a way to tone it down. 10. I get sometimes 25 FPS in the town. Regardless of what Resolution I choose. 7900XTX GPU and Ryzen 7 CPU 32 GB Ram... Just unacceptable. 11. ONE SAVE. Which means I'm gonna play with a GUIDEBOOK. That's on me I guess. 12. Encumberence. Why this thing is even here?! In the game where I literally PICK EVERYTHING I hit my limits way too often. Combine that with pretty much no way to fast travel ( costly and scarce portal stones ) this is infuriating for me. 13. Denuvo DRM. There is much love put in, in this game. From graphics to fun interactions with Pawns and Monster Designs.... but instead of making the game FUN they somewhat made it tedious and in some aspects worse than DD1 Dark Arisen. If you guys are enjoying the game that is perfect. Don't let my post sour your experience. I just think that some of the backlash should include constructive criticism rather than just MT bad therefore Negative Review.

This is not a PVP game. If someone wants to make their game easier, it affects me not at all. Ignore the haters. I have been following you since the release of MHW. Everybody knows your stance on MTX. You make awesome, funny and quality videos. It is just a hate bandwagon fiesta currently. Resident Evil 4 remake is overwhelmingly positive on steam, yet it has 27 paid DLC where 24 of those are not expansions like additional quests etc. You even have weapon upgrade tickets that allow you to upgrade weapons immediately. I believe (might be wrong) but you can use this to have infinite ammo on some weapons. So that is even more of a cheat, or just lowering grind and speeding up progression. Yet nobody had problems with that. Why? Nostalgia? Capcom has been doing this for more than a decade. Devil May Cry has 32 DLC, most of which are in-game currency and customization. Even MHW has a buy-able character editor voucher. Did gamers suddenly learn how to read the "contents for this game" tab and figure out MTX in singleplayer games is a thing? Arkham Knight has batmobile skins and batsuits. Assasins Creed had MTX since Unity. Shadow of War had lootboxes. Character editor not existing is a problem suddenly? Even in Skyrim you had to buy the Dawnguard DLC to get the NPC that allowed you to change appearance. Even Witcher 3, the golden child of RPGs, did not have a way of changing how Geralt looks on release. Only after Blood and Wine did they give free DLC (a miracle but that is CDPR afterall) that allows different hairstyles and beards. Buy yeah, lets all "vote with our wallets" on an actually good singleplayer game (where you can actually ignore the MTX) while CoD releases a new Blackcell battlepass every 1.5 months with a busted meta weapon so the players buy the bundle, then after 2 weeks it gets "balanced" in a patch. Or the 25$ Horse armor in Diablo 4, or the whole situation with Diablo Immortal. But no, no, Dragon's Dogma 2 is the egregious one that players should crucify.

But all camping kits have a variance of "protection" from monster attacks with in different regions of the game also. And paying to fix your weapons at the blacksmith. That's what people don't understand this is all a test how far they can go. Hmmmmm, we were able to in DD1. I played DD2 for about an hour and a half and refunded. But off pure principle I'm not gonna support scummy practices. Game runs like doodoo on PC too I spent 30 minutes before I realized it wasn't gonna ever run and look good with HDR on.

10:12 - There's a camping kit you can get in game that's 4kg and it's resistant to ambushes. Though it can still be destroyed if things go wrong, I think (hasn't happened to me yet). If the Explorer's Camping Kit cannot be destroyed by ambushes that's probably the most "icky" aspect of the purchase. EDIT: Now that I think about it also icky if it CAN be destroyed. I've been playing for almost 10 hours on Xbox series X. I don't understand all the hate for this game. I got used to 30fps after about an hour. Haven't really came across any bugs/glitches. I honestly didn't even know there was micro transactions until I got on KZbin and saw all the videos about it. You don't have to buy any of the micro transactions. Every thing there selling you can get in game besides I think 2 or 3 items. The game is beautiful, it's unique and the world is really cool and immersive. The story is very interesting. It has a cool crafting system. Exploration is rewarding. Listening to your pawns on the trail talking amongst eachother only adds to the immersion. Making your main pawn and then hearing them say they will protect you with their life and are glad to be on this journey with you was such a cool moment. Sure it may seem a little outdated at time. The frames can drop at times. But it's nothing game breaking. I can feel the devs put their heart into this game, it shows. Kinda makes you feel bad for them because they probably worked so hard to make this game just for people to review bomb it, and Ruri, I've been watching your vids for a while now and love your content man. Keep doing what you're doing. You're the reason I found/got into Monster Hunter World. I'll continue to trust/watch your videos.

I didn’t find out the micro transactions until I tried to buy a friend the game. Because I remember it in the original DD and DD:DA but that I don’t think anyone used it. I never did. Anything you could get with the crystals you get in game anyways without money, unsure about the port crystals. It’s a single player game, why would I care if someone else buys it? I’m happy to play the game without any of the items. My concerns are related to optimisation and the risks of auto saving while bugged out.

Till this day it's still less than 60 fps if u play the ps5 version, and they patched out a lot of the issues it had like stutters, but it still stutters here and there on pc till this day. Elden ring had horrible performance for my pc, my sibling tho got to play it great bc he has a beastly pc, but my mid range build had too much stutters. Now I can play it fine on my pc, but sometimes the stutters do happen, just not as often. Also dragon's dogma has too many npcs, the very fact people are gaining framerates by unaliving them, reveals there's some coding issue to do with them.

This is Capcom, they don't need to sell cosmetics and MTX. They're not short on money. People keep brushing all of these off as either "Oh, you don't even need all this stuff. You can just get them in-game" or "Where was all of this outrage when so and so game did the same?" But it's fact that they had the time and money to add all of this when the game itself runs like dogshit. And there were people outraged when their older games did the same, there just weren't enough people that made noise about it. With this one there are so many issues around this game, that this just sent people over the edge. Maybe people have just had enough of this shit and decided to set an example with DD2. Either way, this is a good thing.

In the past, you have always spoken out against microtransactions, so I knew beforehand that you were playing a pre-release where this point was not yet clear. Thanks for the confirmation. However, it must still be noted that Capcom's behavior is at least questionable. Review embargo until shortly before release, no indication of microtransactions and then a DLC list at release that is longer than that of games that have been out for years. If Capcom thinks it's a desirable mechanic in their game to go on long journeys instead of hopping back and forth, why release DLC that weakens this mechanic right at release? Why make the camp equipment heavy and then offer DLC to reduce the weight? In my opinion, Capcom is testing new monetization opportunities for single player games and the players are the beta testers of such mechanics. If they see that it works we'll see a DLC list twice as long in Monster Hunter Wilds, for example.

my thoughts about why early adopters was not aware about the MTX .. (including Rurikhan himself) > preorder page was out, the info regarding MTX items wasnt in the Steam page > early adopters got the game early before release day and streamed it. > The game finally launched in Steam > Capcom hastily added all the MTX stuff into the Steam store page hours AFTER the game was released. yeah pretty scummy move by Capcom there tbh. I remember not seeing all of those MTX stuff before during the pre-order phase of the game on their Steam store page. Its the same stunt they pulled with RE4Remake.

This basically. I preordered, downloaded, and played as soon as it was finished. I was in my library the whole time and not once did I go to the store page or notice the mtx. It was only after I played that I saw it under the play game button listed as DLC. Didn’t think much of it since they always did this, but I also didn’t think it would’ve gotten so much backlash from that especially since RE4 is overwhelmingly positive despite its own mtx

The duality of Steam reviews. DMC 5 has MTXs of skins, music, weapons, consumables, and unlocks? Overwhelmingly positive. Dogma 2, pretty much the same thing? Mostly negative (now mixed). I don't recall if DMC 5 did the "hide the mtx until after the embargo is up" thing, though, crucially. Edit: Actually, you know what? I don't think DMC 5 had any notable performance issues on any platform.

@@mikec5400 But it isn't predatory game design. If you didn't know there was MTX and someone asked you if the in game economy was healthy, you'd say it is. The MTX are all one time purchase, and most of them are items you need many of so it's literally impossible for them to design FOMO with this business model. As goes for EVERY Capcom game, the MTX is added by the publisher after the game is done. Its never impacted any of their products, and we're talking 10+ YEARS of games here, all with similar MTX. Scream slippery slope all you want but it's your opinion vs 10+ years of recorded history. Take that as you will.

The microtransactions at least in this game are only for lazy/busy people who don't want/can't farm in-game items. . As long as it's not actual content I don't have any problem with that.

The only performance issues i have with it is in the city. Where i drop from 60 to 40. At 4k... with most every setting cranked to max... Yeah it sucks. But in all the areas where the framerate matters it runs fine for me. Supposedly setting your Shader Cache to Unlimited/100gb can help significantly. The MTX made me laugh, as its all stuff freely given ingame. Simply not buying the game actually sends the wrong message to Capcom. Buy the game, ignore the MTX. Management will just blame poor game sales on the devs heads and kill the IP. But buying the game and not the MTX is a metric that shows people want the IP but not the MTX and management cant blame that on the devs and IP.
