When Joel and Sarah were being chased by the one infected guy (leading up to Sarah’s death scene) and it was just _hurling_ itself at them and crashing into everything, was so cool to see. It stepped up the fear factor because you can see that this creature *does not care* what it has to do to get to its prey, and it doesn’t look like an actor trying playing a creature at all. It’s such a believable performance

Definitely the scariest scene in imo. He was just completely out of control with one goal: catch and kill. It was horrifying to watch and felt like it went on for forever. Can’t wait to see more scenes like that one.

Speaking of that first kid after the 20 year jump, he didn’t just alluded that he died, they actually show him in the truck. A woman tells Joel “I can’t” because it’s just a kid, and they really focus on his shoelaces (same as the infected kid). Crazy fast character development to see him go from sobbing, holding one child, to then completely empty,l and emotionless caring another to the burn pit.

@botanical_chloride_6471 Жыл бұрын
YESS I loved that parallel of seeing how Joel has changed purely through how he holds the child, the difference between him holding Sarah vs that child perfectly highlights just how much of a toll the past 20 years has taken on him emotionally. Masterful cinematography 💯

Yeah, what was crazy was I didn't realize the kid tested positive and I got upset that they didn't sanitize the injection site when they jabbed the kid. It all made sense when I saw the shoes in the burn pit scene.

The one thing I wish they had done slightly differently was the Tess & Robert bit, she doesn’t seem to be quite as hard of a character yet. I think all the women are so strong. But I loved the bit in the game where when Joel & Tess are in their apartment & Tess had been in an alteration with roberts guys & Joel asks ‘are these assholes still with us?’ & she says ‘huh, funny’ it really shows how much of a badass she is & how she can handle her own. In the 1st episode I feel like she felt less like that because they took that bit out. But I’m excited to see her in the next episode & see if she has some badass moments then.

The writing, the acting, the directing, the SETS, the COSTUMES, THE MAKEUP I’ve never been more blown away than the scene with the infected grown into the wall that Tess and Joel find. I loved it so much. I loved being able to see beyond just Joel’s POV (and Sarah’s for the Tommy in jail thing), like Tess vs. Robert and Ellie vs. Marlene. And I loved that the circumstances for Ellie and Joel meeting were a little different, I like the guns being switched for the battery making the reward more personal than just another job. I’m also really curious about what they’re setting up with Tommy bc that’s definitely the biggest difference so far.

Another thing I really liked was that the guard specified on the radio that Sarah had an injured ankle. I can’t remember if they did that in the game or not, but it struck me as significant because it made the people on the other side of the radio think there was a high likelihood of them being infected.

In the game I believe Joel tells him he thinks Sarah’s leg is broken but the soldier only mentions to his superior that there are “civilians on the outer perimeter” then when presumably told to shoot them he says “but, there’s a little girl.” In the game, I think it’s meant to show the chaos and confusion of not yet knowing the cause of infection.

The episode was sheer perfection! I'm surprised you didn't talk about the radio code and song! The end of the episode, with the shot of the room and radio when it turned on, it was playing an 80s song. Ellie found that key for the decade in which a song was released... and 80s was marked "x"... from the hour 11 mark to about an hour and 15 minutes into the show, Ellie determined that 80s music stood for trouble. Since the radio turned on when they were leaving, it's a whole foreshadowing of the crap they're about to encounter and the ride we're going to go on with them. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! ❤️

I was waiting for this! First episode was magnificent. 😮‍💨 The performances from everyone were great but especially Pedro Pascal and Nico Parker. That opening hit just as hard as the game and maybe even harder since we got to spend much more time with Sarah in the show. The new scenes we got for more context and story mixed with scenes straight out of the game was balanced phenomenally. I had high expectations for this show and they absolutely blew past them. Safe to say my TLOU addiction has been satisfied. For now at least. 😅

The planes crashing scene - I love that they added this.. I noticed after Joel and Tommy were discussing on where to go next, sarah says “maybe it’s everywhere… maybe there’s nowhere to go..” and RIGHT after it shows the planes flying erratically past them. So I they’re confirming this statement that yes, it’s way more serious than Austin TX - it’s the entire 🌎 so fuckin scary!! Made this scene 10000x more helpless, tragic and horrifying

One thing you didn't mention that really stood out to me as absolutely TERRIFYING and SO well done was the scene where Granny gets infected just behind Sarah and just out of our FOV on-screen. i also love that the last scene we see of joel before the time skip is him holding his dead child sobbing, and the first time we see him after the skip is him emotionless as he tosses a dead child onto the burning heap. it really hammers in how cold and emotionally distant hes become after losing sara in living in this world. and that being his starting point when he meets ellie. and then the end of the episode to put him right back in the moment of losing sara and having a ptsd attack and acting without thinking to save ellie the way he wished he could have saved sara. just POETIC CINEMA

I loved the subversion of the drive through town. They extended it a bit with more turns so I was extra tense not knowing which turn was gonna result in the crash, THEN they had the car not hit them so I was even more uneasy not knowing what was going to happen to cause Sarah’s injury, only to then see the plane at that angle creeping up on them in the background growing that dread, then seeing it crash especially knowing that this now only takes place 2 years after 9/11… it was so good. Also funnily enough the first thing that made me tear up my first watch was when Sarah pulled out the Curtis & Viper 2 DVD.

I couldn't believe how much the guy playing Tommy, sounded just like him. I'm not sold on Tess yet; she was such a badass in the game, so far, not so much in the show. I wasn't sure on Bella but once she said "Mother Fcuker" and the way she said it, I was sold then and there. A lot of the game dialogue was going through my head and some of it I was sad wasn't in there and then Joel said one of Tess's lines, so it tells me I've watched the play-throughs of the first TLOU and that things are switched up a bit :) Not a fan of the replacement for the spores. one of the scenes that creeped me out the most was the one where sarah was at the neighbor’s house and the shot was focused on her with her back to the infected old woman. the old woman was out of focus, but you could see her silent spasms and contortions as the fungus was taking hold of her- fucking bone-chilling. really nice addition for the show 😅

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I only vaguely knew about TLOU, so I went into it pretty unassuming. Needless to say I’ve been knee deep in interviews, reactions, and lore. Can’t wait for the rest of the season and your input!

how did Julie miss Ellie's reaction to Joel killing the wall guard with his fists. There's so much in her reaction!

1. the director craig has said in interviews that he played the game when it came out and fell INLOVE with it and was really sad at the time that hes never get to make a tvshow/movie adaptation of this (bc video game adaptations werent rly a thing in 2013) 3. they original voice actors for the clickers returns to voice all the clickers in the show 4. all the infected are all practical affects!!!! 5. they got actors who were fans of the show to play clickers so they they understood the exact movements of the infected 6.ashley johnson and troy baker are both making guest appearances on the show, ashley as ellies mom in flashbacks and troy as james

The random pieces of yellow furniture was phenomenal, too!! I was like stunned at how on spot it was to the game.

I was really hyped for the show but brought my expectations down before the first episode because i wanted to keep an open mind about it and not constantly compare it. but it turned out really good. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season.

I'm so excited to see how they handle some of my favourite scenes later on. So far, it's amazing. I didn't watch the trailer before the show came out because I was super worried this would end up as badly as the Resident Evil tv show, but thankfully The Last of Us has exceeded my expectations and genuinely gripped me by the heart.

I watched this episode while my neighbors were being evacuated due to flooding here in Cali. There was a national guard evacuation bus parked infront of my house! It was very surreal and immersive? 😭

Glad you put this up as its own video. I'm rewatching the playthrough series in between episodes and thought you were the best streamer for this game, so I'm excited to see your thoughts on the series as it progresses. Thanks!

Uwah I was hoping to hear Julien's thoughts immediately after I finished the episode! Absolutely phenomenal, and I say this as someone who's been a hardcore fan of the games for many years and literally grew up with Ellie. I'm so excited to get to the winter chapter! I think what really surprised me was the last scene with Joel and the soldier, and then Mazin's commentary on Ellie's reaction to it. I absolutely adore seeing Joel flip from the emotionless husk hes turned into, to staring between the now-dead soldier and Ellie wondering what just happened, while Ellie is gobsmacked at not only the brutality, but that it was done for her sake. They're so mentally unwell, and I love that for them

I didn’t know this was based on a video game until after we watched the episode. I told my boyfriend when they were in the car it looked like a video game and I loved the way it was filmed. Then he told me the show is based on a game. Wild!
