The Iowa Hawkeyes have been dreadful on offense for years due to poor coaching, schematics, and nepotism. Will incoming transfers, a great running back, and returning experience on the offensive line change that, or will the consistency that holds the defense high continue to plague the offense? After 2 seasons of miserable offenses and a Covid-19 season that was riddled with varying issues, the Spencer Petras era has concluded. Petras was not able to play for most of the Nebraska game or in the Music City Bowl against Kentucky. While showing flashes of potential throughout his career, Petras never developed and was consistently one of the worst quarterbacks in the nation. His poor play, along with poor schemes and development on the offensive line, cost Iowa a Big Ten Championship appearance in 2022 and a New Year's Six bowl game in 2021. However, Kirk Ferentz made a wise decision and reach out for help via the Transfer Portal, bringing in former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara and tight end Erick All. Both were part of a roster that went 12-2 and won the Big Ten in 2021 (ironically beating Iowa in Indianapolis). The Hawkeyes also bring in star wide receiver Kaleb Brown from Iowa, who should be a day-one contributor. With consistency on defense, incoming talent on offense, and an easy schedule, I expect Iowa to be a much-improved team in 2023.

I think it is between Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to win the Big Ten West. While I think the Hawkeyes have a great chance at winning it, I think Wisconsin has a better chance and they are my pick to win the West. Do you think Iowa wins the division?

When's the last time a first year coach (outside OSU) came in and immediately started winning? What is Kirk ferentz's record against first year coaches in the big ten? Wisconsin could have trouble, especially trying to rebuild an already winning team. Like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it

If Iowa had a better offense more consistently they would be in the top fifteen every year and become a serious contender in the big ten they’re always good but they could be so much better.

I hate the attitude that, Iowa needs a miracle to make the Big 10 championship. It’s Iowa spot to lose. Last year iowa lost it and gave it to Purdue. Who els is gonna make it? People act like Luke Fickle is gonna turn Wisconsin into a 12-0 program…and Nebraska same thing Matt rhule cannot turn that dumpster fire around. Iowa has the best chance in the west, so no it’s not a miracle
@jreh3811
@jreh3811 Жыл бұрын
Fickle has the best chance at making a drastic impact compared to Neb. He already has a solid Defense, is bringing in a different offensive mindset to Madison (that may take the first couple games to hone). I say it's between Wiscy, Ill, and Iowa (only if IOwa can get the OL fixed, our Defense will do what it does).

You don't want to mention Brian? Brian had to play his Dad's qb. That's why Brian's given another green light. During the iowa state debacle's post game presser kf said not all of his coaches (note thats plural) agreed about who should be taking snaps, but that it was his call. Brian is being rewarded for trotting petras out there like a good boy. To his credit, KF has figured out the transfer portal shopping spree fairly quickly. Hawks just brought in four skill position guys they didnt have a chance of recruiting out of high school. Brian is going to look way more competent this fall.

Btw, 25 ppg would've been good for 78th in the country in 2022, and it also would've earned them a 10-2 record and a West division title. Just below mediocre is literally all Iowa needs to win 9-10 games most seasons..........but they'd rather make it as difficult as f***ing possible just because.

Iowa always has their best years when being overlooked. Petras was the worst QB and they somehow get 8 wins. They had two top receivers sit out all year. Now they have a QB and two solid receivers they didn’t have. If they score 24 points they are nearly impossible to beat with that D

Iowa one of those teams that can go 8 or 9 wins but think D magic might wear off some no way they keep up crazy stuff it was doing last couple years. So, D be slightly worse and O slightly better not like anyone on offense is a world beater. That OSU WR needs to prove himself before I buy into him either.

Before I watch, they will be better on offense because a QB like McNamara wins Super Bowls. He doesn't have to have super star talent, but that makes it easier. Phil Sims is a great example. He played nearly flawless. Montana did it 4 times. Meaning playing flawless on the biggest stage. The falsified GOAT wasn't flawless, but that is a different video. Playing mistake free will help them even though the coaching staff is a joke.

The Big Ten West runner-ups*. I have Wisconsin winning the West this year, but I think that White Out game will be huge for Penn State. Michigan won the Big Ten in 2021 despite Cade. Michigan struggled to move the ball a lot of the season and it's because the QB was the weak link on an otherwise elite team. Shea Patterson, Wilton Speight and Jake Ruddock all win the Big Ten that year.

Cade is an above average college QB. The Iowa program is built to succeed with an average QB. Generally, the last few years they have been below average. So Cade McNamara will succeed on Iowa’s terms. Whether that is enough for Iowa to succeed is a close call given the supportive offensive cast.
