The last performance of Pink Floyd with Comfortably numb at Live 8 is still one of the most emotional performances ever. Total goosebumps. I'm also going to put this out there, The Who Isle of Wight (my generation) is THE greatest rock live performance I think ever recorded. It has everything rock and roll means in one song, Power, energy, fun, noise, improvisation, broken drums, lunacy (you get the idea)

I'd have to agree that the first solo in Painkiller is easily one of the greatest ever.

Whilst I totally accept that this is entirely subjective I would have to find space for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Uli Jon Roth. Uli’s work on those 70s Scorpions albums and his first few solo albums are simply genius.

This is quite an interesting change of format and actually I like it:) Now I wonder what would be your top 15 solos!

wasn't going to comment until I saw (and agree) with the iconic shot of Eddie slinging the Frankenstrat. The shot that instantly came to my mind that captures rock n' roll--and I think you'll all know it--is the close-up of Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, only their fingers and hands absolutely shredding Working Man live in Cleveland. Not to mention that they were 90 years old at the time. And poor Alex never makes these lists. :-)

So if you want to get into Clapton, i'd suggest starting with the John Mayall (Beano) Album. Then all the stuff he did with Cream. The 60s and the mid 90s are probably his best periods. From the 90s i'd suggest the From the Cradle Album and the Live in Hyde Park Concert. From the Cradle is mostly covers of his biggest influences and imo the best Blues Guitar-sound. The Lead on the Beatles While My Guitar Gently Weeps is also played by him and it is said, that when Harrison and Clapton entered the studio, Lennon said: finally a real musician in here.

David Gilmour is my favorite on this list, but Dime is up there as well. It's so hard for me to choose a favorite solo.... I think it changes from moment to moment. Another guitarist that always plays for the song and is (in my opinion) criminally underrated, even in his own band, is Adam Jones. I'd like to see him on one of these lists sometime.

Guthrie's solo in Regret#9 is insane and deserves a mention. But these are all subjective and I can't complain - or shouldn't.

Thought about it a little. Different solos give different emotions for me, so hard to say which is "best" personally. I think I tend more toward emotions than technical greatness in a solo and for me Steven Rothery consistently gives me the most goosebumps. I tear up without fail during his solo in "Jigsaw".

Lets face it, it'd be rare to get 2 guitarists to agree on more than like, 5 songs in a top 15 list of solos. Just so personal, so based on what time period you listened, what style you're into, how much you value ingenuity over technicals, how much you value influence... etc etc. So its just fun to debate, knowing in the end, past a certain point, it's just personal taste.

I think that is because it seems that he got to a certain point and either got lazy or lost his enthusiasm to challenge himself. Having seen Metallica live quite a bit, his live performances certainly leave a LOT to be desired. A bit like his drumming colleague who was good to begin with but clearly doesn't have a passion to be anything more than he feels he needs to be.

When I listen to the guitar playing on your intro to your YT-channel, it sounds to me like this guy is majorly influenced by John Petrucci from DT?

Funny how a lot of these "greatest" lists have me shaking my head more than anything else everytime I listen to them haha...Larry Carlton on Steely Dan's Kid charlamagne is a stand out for me, but although I'm not a Dream Theatre fan, Lines in the sand is one of the best solo's I've heard...maybe because it gives me Pink Floyd vibes...I'm a huge Gilmour fan.

Yeah, I'm disappointed Jeff Beck didn't make this list, but not surprised. Elements of the solo in"One" by Metallica I believe were inspired by Jeff's solo in The Yardbird's "Happenings Ten Years Ago". I'd love to see "Shapes of Things" in that list. The Yardbirds' version was groundbreaking for its time. Jeff redid the song when he formed the Jeff Beck Group, and that solo inspired Gary Moore's cover in the '80s.

Good watch - was curious myself to see the list itself and this watch was also my first look at the list. Nice to see some deeper cuts or different choices from bands perhaps shaking up the list from the obvious ones. The recorded highway star one is much better - I don’t know why they chose that version!? Maybe loudwire are risking copyright too!? Lol a lot of live versions they are putting in.

I don't expect "Loudwire" to know true legends but they left out a lot. How about John McLaughlin's work on "Birds of Fire", Al Di Meola & like JW said Jeff Beck.

I don't really like solos, it's just not a sound i like listening to in most cases, technically very impressive but i prefer the rhythm and the groove of songs more. I do have 3 that i'm alright with, the one in Hellraiser is really short and fits the song super well, Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me has a really good one that ties back into the song perfectly, and i have to mention one of my favourite guitarists Rabea Massaad, the Aeromancy solo is very cool, i just love his note choices. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZPapaV-aKqEm7c

it would be cool if you could do a response with your picks of great guitar solos to Loudwire's call, maybe not necessarily other songs by the same artists Loudwire selected but ones that were completely left off such as Jeff Beck like you mentioned... i was a bit surprised that Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits was left off, not that i completely agree with but respectfully understand

Most solos I find boring and want to get the rhythm back, why I always enjoyed Killing Joke. For me tho, Revelation Mother Earth and Crazy Train by Randy I actually look fwd to. Jake E Lees Bark At The Moon solo is also great. Anathema also have beautiful solos, not technical, just the right tone and pace.

I hate that Vai isn't on here, because not all of the songs were mainstream or well known. How do you put Malmsteen on and not Vai or Satriani? No SRV, Paul Gilbert, Petrucci, Buckethead, and other amazing wankers? I can name one of the best solos I've ever heard and it's a Djent Latin Jazz Prog band called Vitalism from South America. Check out their video for "Pagan 2," and if you haven't heard it before, prepare to have your face completely peeled off.

I was going to be pissed if they didn't have at least one Dimebag solo. Floods is a great song with a great solo, but I think the craziest shit I ever heard Dimebag play was the solo on Throes of Rejection. I listened to a lot of Pantera and every solo I ever heard sounded like it was Dimebag playing it. However, Throes of Rejection sounded nothing like his previous playing in my opinion. It honestly sounds like a different guitar player to me. Definitely give it a listen if you haven't heard it. Tell me what you think.
