Its humbling to see honest acts of humility and acknowledgement of ones flaws. I admit I have given Islam more shit then it probably deserved for the actions committed in it's name but after learning more about it I apologise for the prejudges I have held in the past. Judging Islam by extremists is like judging Christians by the KKK or west-borrow baptist church.

Quite often the most difficult part is opening up to alternative opinion. One of the reasons why so many people hate/dislike Islam is because they are unwilling to even open the Qur'an (including us Muslims), or watch/hear someone/something remotely positive about the religion. And that stems from ignorance and arrogance. The fact that you have analysed your own thoughts and have corrected it, show's you are mature person. May Allah protect you and me from ignorance and arrogance and may He give us the patience and genuine love to deal with people who carry those attitudes.

TechSyndrome Indeed you are correct, I am not religious and it is unlikely that I will ever be. however I know the importance of respect and giving people a fair hearing. There are so many terrible things said about Islam that people find it hard to remember that Muslims are just people. They get up, go shopping, watch terrible TV. This may sound stupid but where I am from there are so many who fear and hate Islam because of hate groups who call themselves Muslims.

RDDlegacy We’re allowing outside sources to dictate our thoughts and that’s a big problem. I no longer watch broadcast television - it’s poison. So much so, that when I blocked news websites from my computer a few months back, I was constantly typing in news.bbc.co.uk etc even though I knew it was blocked. Now, that is in part due to habit. But there was something much deeper. I felt that the news was somehow contributing to me intellectually and that I was missing out without it. But the opposite is true. I now study more, and have developed intellectually more than I ever done in any stage of my life and that’s no coincidence. I could go into detail but I don’t have the time. If you haven’t already, I would strongly recommend that you subscribe to Russell Brand’s news channel ‘The Trews’, where he regularly talks about the poison spread by the media inc. the recent Paris events. And if you want to see a Muslim's perspective of these events (sad, but I'm also referring to inevitable future events), then I would keep an eye on Bayyinah TV, NAKCollection and Hamza Yusuf Hanson from Zaytuna Institute. As for religion, in Islam, Muslim's believe that Allah (SWT) gives hidayah (guidance) alone. Not me nor any Muslim has control over that. If you accept religion, then you are my brother, if you don’t accept religion, you are still my brother in humanity. Peace, brother.

I have subscribed to Russell Brand's channel as some of you recommended, thank you for the intelligent conversation. Whether or not we share the same religion or faith we are still human beings who above all our faults are logical, loving and reasonable.

They don't allow clever knowledgeable Muslims to go onto mainstream media, they would rather poison minds by using fake Muslims and posers/imposters and other "modern", "cool" and so called "moderate Muslims". They use fake/not very knowledgeable Muslims on media to talk rubbish, assume the staged hoax act was real.

I don't judge a group of people by a few of them making bad decisions. I think that is awful to do and completely unfair!!! thanks again

As an atheist, I need to pay my respects to this gentleman. All that he said may be be applied to Islam as to Christianity or any other religion. For me, this is what religion was supposed to be, and even though I'm an atheist, I truly believe that this type of speech, really searches to maximize quality life! So although we do not share the same way of looking at the world, I'm absolute convinced we search the same purpose. You have my respect Mr. Nouman!

Firstly Im not a muslim but a practising Christian This video simply confirms what I already know about Nounan Ali Khan, he is a True man of God and one of THE GREATEST preachers of our day. His words apply as much to me because he speaks truth. I realise that Islam is inthe spotlight but history shows that christianity has had its fair share of issues to. Reacting is simply playinf into the hands of those who despise you and despise god. When things like this happen it is bad press for all people of the book. Nounan is correct people have got to show they are different by the way they act, when someone insults you far better to not play. Their game. There is q very powerful message for us all in his sermon, muslims and christians alike. We are called to be in the world and not of the world. Even Jesus said people will insult you because of me. Some may remember the film Thexlife of Brian, it made axmoxkerycof Jesus, and for me Idont think Ineed to defend him, they will have thier day in court c with God and no fancy barrister is going to save them . For men such as Nounan I say Alhamdulilah. Wa alieakum salaam

This is one of the most inspiring speeches I have ever come across. However, reading some of the comments below of my fellow Muslim brothers and sisters made me think if they actually had followed this lecture thoroughly. We, as Muslims, should start looking at the mirror before we go out and debate others. We need to stop blaming westerners, media, non Muslims and start asking if have become the best of ourselves. The reason we are in this situation is a result of our own actions and deviations. If we can't lead the society with our morals, intelligence, kindness, and actions, then we haven't reach the point to expect help from Allah. May Allah help all the Muslims to to be leaders of science, education, politics, and finances again. And May Allah help the non Muslims be more patient with us.

O please brother. If you have some knowledge of Islamic history, even during the time of sahaba there was much fitna that resulted in bloodshed because there is always evil that never rests. And whose morality in Islam that is comparable to the sahaba? If we follow logic similiar as yours then the sahaba, too, falls short of character which is totally false. This worlld is a battle ground between good and evil.so we must not only be contented with fighting evil within ourselves but also be prepared to face a greater evil that is rearing its head today.

Quran narrates us the stories of previous Prophets and how patient they were against disbelievers. Their religion and themselves were insulted at least for tens of years. Do you know any Prophet that killed whoever insulted him? If we had a right to kill every insulter, then what would be the point of patience? If 100,000 people used to hate Islam because of that filthy Charlie Hebdo magazine, now 6 billion people hate Islam because of that stupid attack. "And the (faithful) slaves of the Most Gracious (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and sedateness, and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness. (Quran 25:63)"

Caly H ali sina from faithfreedom.org is iranian ex-muslim, from the family of mahomed, who in his youth studied islam in profundity and came very close to become a fundamentalist, but using logic and common sense find out the true behind islam and mohamed and left islam. I recomend his site as a source of information on islam over the tipical "sales pitch" aproach of many imans, they probably tell you to convert (or "revert") now and work the details afterwards. any wrong information you can get from him you can easily refute in the mosque if wrong

Not only that they will gain respect as they speak out against those that transgress others by senseless acts of terror. Yes, it does start in the home, no matter what religious belief you may have. There is only one God, but there are many messengers, and some men have been false prophets in their religious teachings. Everyone here is misunderstanding what Nouman meant by collective responsibility. He meant that, as an ummah, we Muslims must do our part in showing people what true Islam is through our character and response. It is not to apologize on behalf of the criminals. If our religion has been falsely portrayed, we have a responsibility, as a community, to clear the false portrayal from the public through our own actions.

What he said was spot on. We should look at ourselves. I also feel that it's not only western Muslims but at the major Muslim countries also. They are just sitting around on their rich oil money while the rest of the Muslim world suffers. Also correct was his comment of us Muslims not studying the Qur'an properly and PRACTICING the sunnah properly. We are quick to judge others but don't look at ourselves. Just look at the backward mentality of people back in India and Pakistan or Africa.

I have been watching a lot of his videos and realised that he is a very opinionated guy I must admit. It seems to me that he spends more time defending the People who are attacking Islam and the prophet more than Muslims. You're telling the people who speak against the non believers to look at themselves in the mirror, he needs to do that more than anyone else. Just because he gained a lot of knowledge on Islam and able to provide Ayaa from the Quran and Hadith doesn't mean that we should listen to him. Millions of Muslims are being killed and all he can say is that have Taqwa. How else and how long do the Muslims needs to suffer to get it through to your head? What would the prophet and his companion would say if they saw the state of the Muslims now. I am not saying let's become extremist but don't you think that a well known person like you need to tell the Haq. Remember one of the first people that will enter Jahannam is an well known scholar. Whatever makes you fall asleep at night.

Shut up. You can't validate your view point automatically by making a reference to a misguided scholar. Nouman is obviously talking in the context of Muslims reacting to little things; when there's a lack of provocation - that's result of the state of Muslims now. Muslims have part to blame - and that's what he addresses.

Although I have been unable to find the open minded tolerance Mr. Ali Khan finds in the Koran, I do appreciate his voicing the criticisms non muslims have of Islam and his call for muslims to look within to address these problems. His stance is a refreshing change from the usual anger, denial, and blame one encounters when querying muslims re islam.

there are more of him in the muslim community than they are extremists and many live peacefully, fully integrated into the society practicing much self reflection, looking into thyself before doing any finger pointing. Not to mention, because we have different understanding and approach, even our muslim brothers and sisters(of extreme understandings), judged us. Hence most of us practiced our faith in silence and more in acts of generosity, charity, kindness and love. The way we are taught by our Prophet (SAW). i dont care what another muslim speaks of me. We are not in the Makkan period. That was to show the world Islam. We are in the Madina period and thus we act according to the actions of Rasul Allah SAW and the sahaba in the Madina period. It's not as if the world does not know what Islam is. There are times to be hard and times to be soft. You are right that the Ummah needs to become something worth respecting, but that's the only right thing you've said. Clearly, you don't know much about Umar RA. We need a balance. Sorry, but I can't help but feel angry after watching this video. I feel like all Nouman does is offer a hippie feel-good reinterpretation of Islam that doesn't stand-up to the historic record of the Prophet and Sabaha's behavior. There are plenty of sahih examples other than the one Nouman addressed about Abu Afak where the early Muslims killed those that criticized or ridiculed the prophet. For example, the blind man that killed his wife for mocking the prophet (Abu Dawud 19:2996). Then there's the fact that "those who mocked Muhammad at Mecca were killed after he had retaken the city and asserted his authority" (Bukhari 4:241). This includes an old man that was killed because he didn't want to prostrate with the prophet (Bukhari 19:173). So although I agree with Nouman's overall message and find it to be a beautiful message, I find him disingenuous. Sorry.

9:111 - Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties [in exchange] for that they will have Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah , so they kill and are killed. [It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah ? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And it is that which is the great attainment. Basically the Qur'an says to not place your sights on worldly riches or wealth as the greater reward is Hereafter. What Allah will give to believers in the Hereafter is more precious and great than anything in this world. Like I said. Those "radicals" are only doing what is instructed by Allah.

My question is why does it seem muslims are more offended by when the Prophet Muhammad gets slandered or drawn however the same outcry does not apply to Jesus Christ? He is a prophet as well. It seems that muslims have an ethnocentric view, imo. And btw I'm not of any religious sect. In regards to the video I think its a great step forward and hopefully more people share this view. I've had a few convos with some of my muslim friends and sadly they don't share the same views of this man.

We Turkish Muslims, we don't speak Arabic nor read anymore. So, I asked one woman Mescid in Ohio. I said " why Allah discriminate women to cover our hair "? She did not answer & gave me dirty look. See, I cannot even ask simple Islam, we Muslims have been throw out or looked at as kafir because we want it to know, why Allah force Islam on women? Allah does not force Islam on women at all, Muslim women are free any other non-Muslim women, but we are told, if we don't obey Islam, Allah will burn us. This is child abuse & mental abuse. Allah does not burn or strike lighting at Muslims or Muslims women, because I choose not to cover my hair. When I read Holy Qur'an in Turkish translation, I was shocked! Allah is not iron fist violent & mean Allah!. Allah is loving & gives freedom on any human beings, especially on all women. I hated Muslims so bad, I looked at them ignorant. yes, they are, yes we are the worse closed minded people on earth!. My daughter, even she felt when she was 8 years old, she tried to learn Islam in Ohio Mosques, she even felt the hatred look & discrimination from other Muslim girls, because she looked American, she is half American. The way Muslims look at other race & Muslims, we felt hatred. My daughter never went on that Mosques again.Even today, my children & I we don't like Muslims, we feel hate & not wanted there.. Muslim women are treated like second class from all Muslim men, we are forced to sit separate from men even in the Mosques. Prophet Mohammad never did that, he made women to sit in same room but women sit behind the men, men sit front row, all women behind row, because women breast fed their children & men should not look at women breasts while we breast feed, this is the reason he said, women should be behind the men for their privacy. He never told to Muslim men to put a wall between women & men or build upstairs separate women. Muslims men today, they have hatred & they do look down on women. Muslim men, they will deny that they discriminate Muslim women. Then came Palestine issue, Muslims Mosques became political debate, damn, we cannot even just pray any where, we have to argue about Palestine in mescids as well. I remember in Ohio, one day I went to pray Fridays pray, one black American convert Muslim woman, her face was covered in black, her whole body covered in black even her hands, she was asking other Muslim women, if they would go to downtown to protest for Palestine? I had no idea, why & what is about, she was asking to go downtown? I asked her why? She got so angry, she closed her eyes started yelling & she want it to bet me up.She is black American from ghetto , I could tell her attitude. she was a fighter! I told her why are you angry at me, all I asked is why? I told her she is not a good Muslim, just because you became Muslims yesterday, you think you are better Muslim then me? Her attitude was very nasty, I mean real ghetto bitch, I told her, you are better Muslim because you are standing up for Palestine? She said to me, ( in rage), let s go outside, I will take care of you right now outside.. Other Muslim women did not say anything to stop her, they all were silence they were ashamed what was happening. Then, when prayers were announced to up stairs to women be ready for prayers, from down stares by Muslim imam, this ghetto black Muslim went on praying, like nothing happened.. I got so angry, I was shaking up, never seen this type of Muslim ignorance never ever before in my whole life., I left that Mosques without Friday praying. Never went that Mosques ever again. since then I hated American black Muslims as well. Muslims are violent, our mentality is violent, even towards on other Muslims. I hate Muslims, I cannot even ask freaking word about Islam. I don't talk to Muslims from other countries anymore because of this, not even the Turkish Muslim because Muslims, we all became very disturbing to Muslims & all humanity. Our ignorance is toxic. I never hated Muslims when I was a child in Germany. Now, I know true Islam! Muslims are sick in the head. Yes, our thinking, our narrow mind, our closed mind, our ignorance, our stupidity, very very, sick & sick. We are like Zombies! :))) Even the Islam it self, is scared of intolerant Muslims! :))))

When I asked why people think like that and do that, I will always get the respond we don't know. I have always been a person who try to not lie and help anyone with all I can, and yet I've heard from other Muslims. That I was a fool, that I let people walk all over me. Even though I have experienced much pain, from people whom I've been good to, Allah have given me a heart that forgive easily. The Qur'an is crystal clear about Charlie Hebdo. There is no misunderstanding. Charlie Hebdo has been attacking Islam for years. And have been warned again & again. The excuses that Nouman Khan quotes about verballing the prophet relate to the time before hijira & the creation of the Islamic State (Medina). The final portion of the Qur'an was revealed & included the following Qur'anic verse which is the justification that supports the hadiths of "Kill whoever insults the Messenger". And Alhamdulillaah, we again have a Caliph to defend the Prophet's honor: *And if they break their oaths after their treaty and DEFAME YOUR RELIGION, THEN FIGHT THE LEADERS OF DISBELIEF, for indeed, there are no oaths (sacred) to them; (fight them that) they might cease.* 9:12

But they didnt kill the cartoonists, they killed innocent civillians in their way, one of whom was a muslim.

Why now 'innocent civilians'? Surely NATO's official line for years has been "collateral damage" when slaughtering innocent muslim civvies. Why change the terminology for Paris?

I think you took that ayah out of context. That ayah came down after the quraish had broken the treaty. Even then, the prophet marched on to Makkah and there was no fighting. Forgive me if I am wrong.

The day Makkah was opened was the day the guilty ones who mocked the Messenger by way of poems & songs were executed: In the Sunnah, Abu Dawood (2683) narrated that Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqaas said: “On the Day of the Conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) granted safety to the people except for four men and two women, and he named them, and Ibn Abi Sarh… As for Ibn Abi Sarh, he hid with ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan, and when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) called the people to give their allegiance to him, he brought him to stand before the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He said, “O Prophet of Allaah, accept the allegiance of ‘Abd-Allaah.” He raised his head and looked at him three times, refusing him, then he accepted his allegiance after the third time. Then he turned to his companions and said: “Was there not among you any smart man who could have got up and killed this person when he saw me refusing to give him my hand and accept his allegiance?” They said, “We do not know what is in your heart, O Messenger of Allaah. Why did you not gesture to us with your eyes?” He said, “It is not befitting for a Prophet to betray a person with a gesture of his eyes.” (Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 2334)

Adam Maher Stop quoting things out of context brother. All the scholars agree that it's impermissible to take the law into your own hands, whatever your opinion on blasphemy in Shariah is.

Mashallah, great khutbah. Thanks for helping us understand the situation and suggesting alternative responses to the problem. Whenever the Prophet (SAW) used to face ridicule or hardship by disbelievers, he used to pray to Allah for their guidance. After seeing the cartoon, if Muslims had gathered to make dua collectively and speak out against it, I think that would've been a better response than what actually transpired.

And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, "Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance." If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper. (Sura Bakarah -120)

And let the race begin between bigots and the ignorant who don't wanna understand their own faith. There will be many who will say ahh we don't care what he has to say as Islam is the violent religion and blah blah blah and then there will be who will be like nouman is kafir or how much they don't like him anymore just because either they didn't listen to whole lecture or their mind was blocked before the lecture started as they could only hear what they wanted to hear. What Quran has to say doesn't matter to them and they still will be like those three were martyred because they were protecting the honor of prophet. Like seriously? who you think you or those three were? You think Allah and the Best Man who ever walked on the surface of the earth needs you to protect their honor. what you and those three tried to do was dishonor Him. The Man (S.A.W) was the best example of moral, ethics and mercy. Those three violated His teachings and people are protecting them and attacking brother Nouman? Their actions actually spread the fitnah and problems for Muslims all over the world and let me tell you how: Nobody knew about the scumbag charlie hebdo, except his own cousins probably. But guess what! now everyone who has access to media knows their name. Suddenly nobody became everybody. The cartoons which i had no idea existed are now published in every single news paper. The cheap attention seekers now became the heros of so called freedom of speech. Muslims all over the world getting attacked by the bigots and islamophobes who were waiting for an excuse to do so but guess what? Those three gave them that REASON because now they know people will support the hate against Muslims because everyone is emotional. And what about muslim police man? He wasn't muslim? All of you who are supporting those three criminals needs to straighten up their Qibla. Those three and charlie are probably at the same place. Don't dishonor the martyrs by calling those three martyrs.

A highly commendable speech by Nouman, but I think his message is likely to fall on deaf ears if his words are intended to be heard and absorbed by the fundamentalist community. The problem is, by far the vast majority of the Islamic community are Eastern and not Western. Islam may therefore reform in the West, but it is not going to ever come close to any reformation in the East. This is where I think it will become difficult to reform in any manner really. Almost impossible without the express assistance of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Qatar, Egypt, Yemen, etcetera. Nouman's message is in essence the right one, but it's bordering on a pointless exercise unless we all do a similar self-flagellation exercise with him. We all must wake up and come together to rid the world of the menace of terror in the name of religion. We can all do much better! Peace. Craig

Masya Allah, even today in light of the recent Paris tragedy this khutbah is still relevant, brother. We do have to look in the mirror and ask within ourselves whether we actually do know Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم and the message he carries from Allah تعالى or not. May Allah's mercy and blessings fall upon you like an endless heavy rain and may He always guard you and continue to allow His guidance to come through you.
