To me, this is a type of program that should be required in High School. If every person in this country had to learn this before getting their diploma then maybe people would not be so freaked out about other problems that pop up in everyday life.

As a CERT instructor I want to caution you about the first aid equipment particularly medication. You are NOT authorized to give out medication. No aspirin, liquid allergy medication etc when you are functioning as a CERT member. You can give topical antiseptic. Caution, some people are allergic to triple antibiotic ointment. Bactracin , I might have miss-spelled that, is a better option. You can't give someone an epipen. California is way more restrictive than Oregon, where I am, so please, please review your scope of practice permissions. You can get in trouble easily by straying outside of your "CERT Box". CERT is still viewed by some jurisdictions as a necessary evil to be tolerated. We, as CERT volunteers, have to make sure that we always behave in a professional manner and follow all the rules. Eventually we will be seen in a different light, but only if we all work together to be as professional as possible. Other than that, good video, and you also covered many of the same points about equipment that I cover as well.

It’s worth noting that CERT was basically invested by Los Angeles’ Fire Department in the mid-80s, and is quite common and well respected in LA and California generally. I’ll echo your comments on drugs though: even as an EMT I can’t give out things like Advil. That’s limited to paramedics, and even they have standing orders they have to follow.

I have been a CERT member for several years and have been activated in several disasters. I have some advice for you, keep both the leather and the mechanic's type gloves in your bag. There are situations where each type of glove is better than the other. Most CERT members will have both types of gloves in their bags.

In our CERT classes we also teach that it is advisable to wear nitrile gloves under your leather gloves so you can easily transition from search to first aid. You don't want to contaminate your work gloves with blood of you come upon a victim during search phase.

About the 3-7 day rule. One example I like to give is the F5 tornado that went through Plainfield, IL (not far from where our class is held). Over 1000 homes were destroyed. With a household average of 2.5 people there would potentially be 2,500 people in need of attention. There are only 60 Paramedics on staff in that town. It's going to take a LONG time for 60 paramedics to get to 2500 people. Being able to help your household and your neighbors is crucial. Even minor injuries left unattended to can become very serious. Just being there to help reduce people's anxiety is a big help. People can make strange choices when in panic mode.

Very good summary. Common sense is over-rated by some. We aren't born with much except nursing, pooping and urinating. We learn as we live, IF we pay attention, and even that depends on our environment: hot, cold, urban, rural, etc. Unfortunately, humans tend to seek knowledge after they need it. Keep up your postings and thank you.

Surgical masks are good for preventing fluid transfer (blood, breath and sneezes), but are pretty useless for dust/particulates. N95 masks seal to your face and filter out all but the tiniest of particles (They do nothing against biologicals and chemicals). Surgical masks do not seal, so even if they did stop particulates, they don't stop them from simply going around the mask. If you're going to carry surgical masks, only give them to folks you meet along the way to make them feel better.

After Hurricane IKE we did 14 days without power. And yes - I saw people in the convenience / grocery store stugging it out over a bag of Cheetos. We stood in line for hours just to be able to buy 5 gallons of gas for cars or generators. We had looters in the streets at night surveying and probing homes. There was no phone service and cell phones were spotty at best. So no 911. I think it is totally irresponsible for any citizen (except elderly and medically compromised) to not be able to self suffice for at least two weeks. Great vid. Probably my 2nd fave next to your Em-Comm Disaster Communication Part 1 vid. I'm eager to learn more.

eSk8er, yes & hardhats are very adjustable. On the safety goggles, I found a better set that was OSHA approved that fit over my glasses so much better, then put the ones I was issued in a ziplock plastic bag to stash in case someone on my team arrives without eye protection. Did the same for the work gloves that came in the CERT pack & replaced with better fitting gloves.

So now it is 2022. I started CERT a few months ago, and it drove me to ham radio; and some CERT members are in the ham club. Before I was licensed, we did a radio exercise. It went poorly. The radios were not programmed right and we lost time until it was fixed (my team's radio was set to TX on 400Mhz. Yikes). Next time was better.

I recommend getting an amateur radio license and include a hand-held ham radio. I would also add energy bars, sunscreen, and insect repellent - you need to take care of yourself. Knee pads are very helpful if you are crawling through rubble.

In NYC, government agencies only seek communication help from registered license holders. they used to just get anyone, but it turned really bad really fast. since 911, anyone helping with communications for government agencies MUST hold a license, otherwise you will be told to leave the premises and be either escorted to a safe zone / building, or escorted to the nearest exit and told not to return, depending on the event at hand. ooh and for those that dont live in large apartment complexes. when a major disaster happens, be very careful around apartment complexes a.k.a (projects). it can get extremely dangerous really fast since they know 911 is not around and wont get to the complex any time soon. it will turn into no mans land really quick. If you dont live there, dont be around them.

They don't recommend we do CPR because you'd have to continue doing it until someone else could take over. That means one or more people would be out of commission as far as CERT duties -- not able to help other people in need. It goes back to helping the most people in the shortest amount of time. Yep, it would be hard to pass that person by. it's great you've had that training, though -- good on you.
@WH6FQE
@WH6FQE 6 жыл бұрын
They no longer even talk about CPR in the recent CERT class I did this month as a refresher. The only thing now is to attempt to open the airway twice, and if breathing does not start spontaneously on its own, tag them black and move on. I countered with "unless it's your team member, then do CPR, especially if it's me laying there".
@kilodeltaeight
@kilodeltaeight 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, when you’re doing austere care things like CPR are out. If you’re so sick your heart isn’t beating on it’s own, abs there’s been a major disaster, there’s no way we’re gonna be able to get you to definitive care quickly enough (if at all) to save your life. It’d almost guaranteed be a waste of several responders who cooks help more people and keep them from getting too sick to save. Plus, CPR is *exhausting*, which means now you’re too tired to help. Does it suck? Yes. One of the hardest things to do in CERT training is to convey the reality that, as a responder in a major disaster, you’re probably gonna have to make HORRIBLE choices and see things that will stick with you for a *long* time. You’ll save a lot of lives, but it’s not without some cost.

Can you take just the communications part out of the CERT book, and adapt it for "people?" Ordinary people will do dumb things thinking they will get instant help, but they really need to know the protocols, and that you can even use radios other than ham for Intel or communication.

Everyone forgets the $500 Epipen is no different than any $25 preloaded epinephrine syringe, except for one being automatic and way more expensive. So cost is not a big issue if you buy the right product. But as others have said, the program rules say DO NOT EXCEED YOUR TRAINING and do not give out any meds. If you do that, you become personally liable. If you disagree with the program, respond as an individual, not a CERT team member. CERT teams largely conform to the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS) so that we all can respond to any mutual aid call, on any scale, and still mesh smoothly even if we are all strangers. Exceeding those basics varies with your team sponsor, which must be a formal emergency ageny.

hoshnasi the more training the better, pretty much maxipads and a ace wrap or coband/vet wrap is a substitute for a Israeli bandage, a grocery bag with tape on three sides, with on flap open can be put over a sucking chest wound if u dont have a asherman chest seal or a halo chest seal. Bungee cord can be used if u dont have a rats tourniquet. Sugar and iodine "sugardyne" is good for open wounds even herbs to plants can used. U can use leeches and maggots to heal wounds, sandwhich bags with saline, the list goes on
@hahmtae-jin4142

I can't agree more with el dork pistolero. Maxipads are the best when it comes to bleeding---with obvious reason. I have never used the more modern thin ones, preferring the old school ones now called by the descriptors "overnight", "Hospital", "Obstetrical" to name a few. Only because I know they work through having used them on more than one occasion. They will tolerate lots of pressure, can be stacked if needed. They can be held on as noted by pistolero. The lack of sterility is a moot point. Someone at the hospital ER will deal with that, the casualty has to get there alive.

CERT wants you to build up your gear to the level you are comfortable with and the to the level of involvement you wish to do. Many just want some basic, OH GOSH WHAT DO I DO NOW type training but DO NOT want to be involved in the month to month activities of the CERT group in an area. Then even if you are involved maybe you only have an interest in one aspect, say your old and can't get down on the ground to do the medical stuff easily--so maybe you become a wiz at IC or Radio, so you play those items up and minimize the others.The Cerritos group actually provided at lot to hoshnasi, our group just provides helmet, vest, gloves, goggles, we have a lot of the first type who just want info. There are very cheap plastic clips you can buy to keep a headlight on one of these helmets. My Amazon order history says I got 60 of the puppies for around $25--They come in packs of 30 got a lot cause they're cheap and if they break I have replacements. I also have 3 different helmets tasked to three different groups--CERT; SARS; and working around the yard. Sorry I come to these kind of threads years late, but post anyway

I know its been a year - however - don't put medicines in your cert bag. If you're going to carry it - keep it in a separate bag. Some Certs (myself included) have 3 bags carried during drills. Yes, they are important to practice with. 1) regular cert stuff, 2) medic kit for first aid & stuff, and 3) Communications - radios, batteries & separate both the radio & the batteries. Do NOT rubberband them. Add to your bag - food, water (water filters can be a pain in an emergency), More N95 face masks, ditch your medical masks to your medicine chest at home. Don't forget fun things too - like hard candy, bubble gum, anything to build saliva. Food stuffs to avoid for those reading this comment: Trail mix, salted nuts, anything that will be salty for that matter. In an emergency you should not be eating anything that will require extra water. Water will be at a scarce level - treat it that way. For those who are water drinkers - get a grip buttercup your water bottle will be empty in about 20 minutes in an emergency and you will not be allowed to refill it. Think about it.
