tbh i literally couldn't care what books people are talking about (aside from if its something in the realm of what i read), i am so out of the loop of what is new lol, but its how people talk about it. I remember back in 2015/16 everyone use to just read the newest stuff and that was all they talked about but they didnt really say anything about any of the books, they use to just say stuff like "it was so good", "i loved it", "you need to read it", shallow, surface level stuff. It was so rare to hear about why someone thaught it was a good book.

I certainly don’t have FOMO, but it’s always so annoying when the only recommendations in many fb book groups are the same over and over again and they get hundreds of comments. It seems that a lot of folks suffer massively from it and are fearful to read outside of their norm. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks for this post.

Just subscribed after you mentioned Mitch Albom, I haven't heard anyone on booktube mention anyone like him and he wrote my favorite book of all time "Tuesdays With Morrie". I started my channel about a month ago now, I'm currently editing a video that should be up by today but I always get distracted with Booktube. I think that could be added on to your list. When I tell non-bookish people that I run a BookTube channel and explain it to them, they usually go, "Oh yes. I see. That makes sense." Because I literally talk about books ALL the time to everyone, so making videos about books is just another extension of my personality. So people's reaction is usually, "Ah yes. She talks about books ALL the time, in every conversation, and every time I have seen her she's holding a book. Makes sense that she talks about books on the internet too. Yep. That's her. Book girl."

I just sat here watching this video and nodding the entire time. My comments aren't quite as inflammatory as yours, but I do get this one person who simply writes "hi" on every single video. I used to write and a nice message back in the hopes that they actually say something book related, but nope. I just ignore all the "hi"s. I also got a VERY explicit sexual comment once and felt rather violated. I deleted that immediately. And one time I got a comment saying that Jane Austen is a hoax and that someone else wrote all her books. It's a whole paragraph long. It's hysterical and remains in my unpublished section. I too am sick of people asking me to review their books. It very clearly states on my page that I will only accept reviews from publishers (not that any of them are knocking down my door). But I'm sorry random person, what about my channel makes you think I'm interested in a middle grade sci-fi book? The sad part is this particular person somehow thought my review of The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock means I would be interested in middle grade sci-fi. How? How do you even make that leap?? I do have very very strong FOMO. I struggle with whether to read new releases as well. I've realized that I get more satisfaction from reading older works because newer books have so much hype surrounding them. It's so tempting to pick them up though! I read the first few pages of The Testaments in a bookstore and I can't figure out if I even want to read it. And yes, book people are the best! If you ever want to take a trip to NY let me know! Thankyou for this video. I started posting book reviews as a fun way of sharing my thoughts about diversity in children’s books, I didn’t even realise there was such a community.

Lol that comment you read at 3:05 . The way it’s written is so strange. Like it’s written by someone’s senile grandma who loves to berate on younger people, her daughter in law, her kids whatever. That or someone whose first language isn’t English who just learned about the internet.

I'm sorry, but that comment is hilarious 😂 you're absolutely right, what kind of person would have a thought like that AND then decide to comment it? The FOMO thing is so weird, I just made a short recently asking if it's just me who doesn't much like the term "backlist" 😅

I've read so many more books and expanded my horizons a lot since I started my channel - I'm very happy about that. Another thing I didn't expect was that I hate my face a lot less than I used to. My self esteem has been really terrible for a long time and I've been avoiding mirrors for just as long. But with my channel, I have to look at my face quite a lot and also listen to my voice while I edit. This was really painful for me for probably the first six months I was making videos, but very gradually, so that I didn't notice until it had already happened, I got used to it. I no longer hated either my face or my voice. Didn't love them, but they were more a neutral thing than something to cringe at. I even occasionally thought I looked nice, like when I would smile about a book I really loved (hence getting a screenshot of that for all my profile pictures). Plus I've met a load of feminists, which I was severely lacking in non-internet life, and it is such a relief to be able to talk among ourselves, and unload a bit.

Wow, I hadn't even thought about the effect on self esteem and body confidence. It's definitely had the same effect on me. Maybe everyone should be forced to look at their face for several hours a week :D Thank you for sharing your experiences. Also your profile picture is lovely.

Thanks for some helpful warnings. I am thinking of starting a book channel, or rather talking about books on a channel that already exists. The trolling comments are beyond belief, aren't they? If it is not revealing too much, what is your PhD about, please? (I will understand, if you don't want to disclose personal information.)

Thanks for making this! I'm hoping to improve in speaking and comprehension skills as a result of needing to speak about books after I read them and describe why I liked them.

9:43 This. Yes. Explaining what you do to people who clearly aren’t interested 😂 I just got started, and I have done it 4xs. I was relating to my husband that someone I spoke to didn’t know what a TBR was, and he said, “Honestly? I don’t know either.” 🤦🏻‍♀️

Oh wow. That Jane Austen comment ... it just ... wow. And I agree with the public speaking skills! I LOATHE public speaking. Talking to a camera was so weird at first, and I still feel super awkward filming in front of my husband, but I'm getting much better and slowly feeling less self-conscious.

I have considered making video reviews for books that I have read, but it would be more like a video journal collection for my self. Views is not my concern. And mostly film my hands and the book and a table cloth background. Nothing hard hitting, and more academic. That’s how I would do it. Or figure out how to record on Minecraft.

Starting my own booktube channel and just wanted to basically 'read the reviews' before I buy (just like a book). So far, I just feel bad that you had to read that one comment (about the hair and Jane Austen). What was wrong with them??

You get racist comments? How? Why?! I'm mixed race and I've never had a racist comment on my channel, but that might be because nobody knows I exist... Hahaha! My channel is too small to attract trolls! lol I can't believe how rude people are being! You're such a LOVELY person! You shouldn't have to go through that! Yes! So many positive points! Hold on! There's a booktube meet up in London?! How did I not know about that?! Haha! You can come and visit me in Northern Ireland anytime :D Brilliant video! :D

People sometimes assume that I'm Jewish/Middle Eastern/Asian. I tend to delete those comments straight away. And yes, there is an annual booktube meet up in London apparently! I knew about it for this year, but going to London for a day is just not within my budget unfortunately.

It sounds like the positive things outweigh the negatives! My channel is still small as I only started it a few months ago but so far it's been an overwhelmingly positive experience because of some of the things you highlight in your video. And it just gets better. May it long continue! Thanks for making such an honest video!

I love this video idea! I haven't gotten any hateful or creepy comments yet. lol, I'm not that popular yet! I bet when I get the first I feel glad that I have crossed that bridge as a sign of popularity. lol. I love reacting to comments videos. The thing I struggle with the most is consistent content. I also feel like I'm still in the experimental phase trying to find the way to do wrap ups the best way for me. I will go through spurts of filming and editing and then I get burnt out. The time it takes to film and edit. I also struggle with staying organized. I have a system that I keep tweaking and trying to make it more efficient. I would love to see how other booktubers organize their desktop and folders and organize video projects, theres ones that are instant and others that are more complicated and require multiple clips and files, and others still that are long term projects. Oh yes, public speaking is a really good one, I have always been horrible at it, i still am, in a camera is way different than in a camera. When My husband is home or in public places I freeze up still. I also script a lot of my videos, but I suppose it is loads better, I don't have to script as much or as meticulously.
@SpinstersLibrary

I don't think consistency in terms of content is particularly important - I've come to terms with the fact that, while I mostly talk about book, I also want to make videos about other things. Keep experimenting!
