I was initially disappointed with the reveal, but aftet digesting it for a while the fact that Nightreign can be played solo and provides a fresh 45 minute experience with randomised terrain, monsters, bosses is actually pretty exciting to me, since I'm a player who doesn't really do 2nd playthroughs and just kind of aimlessly wanders around after I've beaten a big RPG. I wanted a boss rush mode or menu in Elden Ring but this might be even better since it's adding new innovations to combat (see: that character at 9:20 breaking enemy posture with a deflect like in Sekiro, you can't do that with the deflect tear in ER), always a new environment and in bite-sized chunks, not like a playthrough of 100ish hours where you know where everything is and nothing is a surprise. All in all, I actually quite like it as a souls vet, the narrative and atmosphere of a game is nice but it's only new once. Combat can be infinitely interesting, that's why people load up counterstrike and similiar games for like literally 10,000 hours and not get bored. Nice little release to tide us over before the actual Miyazaki and A-team directed masterpiece, even though I do understand people's concerns about repackaging assets and selling it as a new game, and the borrowing of mechanics from cashgrab type battle royale games might make it seem like Fromsoft is turning towards the dark side. (Even though I don't think they are.)

Personally I never played the souls games for the combat since thats the weakest part of the games. I did play it for the unique bosses (old monk, Maiden Astrea) and interconnected world. With Elden ring Nightreign it looks like Fromsoft went: what is popular right now? Battle royale’s and Roguelites! Lets combine that and put in nostalgia bait bosses explained away by Multiverses

@@DionPanday If it was a game made by Miyazaki and the A-team, and not a project for a new developer (Junya Ishizaki) to cut his teeth on I'd be more concerned. Re: the combat stuff, I defo appreciate both the world design and atmosphere of souls as well, I just see this as a way for Fromsoft to refine their combat in a low-risk, low-budget game. Experimenting with adding true sekiro style deflects, the grappling hook from one of the chars, probably a decent bunch of combat innovations in the chars not shown in the playtests either. I recently went back and beat Bloodborne (long time coming) and the world and general vibe was fantastic, but I was so used to faster and more complex combat from the more recent entries that I steamrolled most bosses in a couple tries. I think a game is just so much more enhanced when it depicts a hostile, decaying world and it genuinely challenges you mechanically as well, and it seems like SOTE has shown how creaky the combat is now when faced vs. bosses like Consort Radahn - the next big entry needs to innovate imo. (Also, no shade on Bloodborne intended, love that game.)

@@YakuzaGoon i mean Elden ring combat even in shadow of the erdtree is still miles behind games like Bayonetta, Metal hear rising, God hand , Devil may cry and Ninja Gaiden. And that was fine because the combat was never the focus of the series. It was about actually thinking about your approach to tackle a certain situation or a boss instead of just pressing the dodge button a few hundred times. Its like if Mario games started to focus on really big epic plotlines and super intricate lore. Never did I think fromsoft fans would defend an obvious cash grab that chases current trends but here we are. Wouldnt it be better if the resources that were spent on this game were actually used to make the real games and dlc better?
@YakuzaGoon21 сағат бұрын
@@DionPanday I'm not as excited for Nightreign as I would be a proper fromsoft IP, I'm simply saying it's an experiment to sharpen up a core part of the games, Miyazaki is likely working on the next big entry, and I don't mind having smaller entries in the years where they don't release anything. The team that made this is very likely not the team that'd be working on the next big Fromsoft game. It's obviously not as cool as say, a Bloodborne 2 or Sekiro 2 announcement which are games with alot of cool aspects beyond combat. In regards to the combat not being a main focus, combat is how the player character primarily interacts with the world, it's not like you could convince Miquella that you wouldn't obstruct this plans to become Lord via dialogue or something in SOTE, and various other major plot points where there should be other ways to deal with the situation other than combat. I don't disagree that Fromsoft games are about more than the combat nor do I not value atmosphere and narrative - my favourite games are the Yakuza entries by RGG studio which have pretty easy combat but fantastic characters and themes - but combat is a very core ingredient and it needs to be sharp. It's also about linking the narrative and the gameplay together. Let's think of a game about a dangerous, post-apocalyptic world and the primary way the player interacted with it was via combat, but imagine if the combat was pressing 1 button to kill any enemy and they did no damage to you - would you really be convinced that the world was dangerous, would you really feel it? Sure, you could be told via narrative means, but it wouldn't be as emotionally compelling as if every enemy could wreck you. Re: the ER combat being worse than those mentioned games and barely more advanced than the combat in demon's souls is precisely why I hope they'll be improving it with the experimentation in this entry that should have knock-on effects on their games in development - there's more than one way to make the actual entries better. They also did similiar experimentation with armored core entries like AC: Nine Breaker that focused more on arena mode.

@@DionPanday But what if I don't like the combat style of games like Bayonetta, DMC etc. ? Elden Ring combat goes in a different direction. It doesn't have to be like these games at all to be really good. ERs combat is confined but complex with a high skill ceiling. You can't really compare the two though because they're very different. One combat system is player focused (DMC) one is enemy focused. There's not a dozen different ways to initiate an air combo or something but I wouldn't want that at all either. What I want is something like the Beastclaw R2, that makes me duck an attack and simultaneously attack and like a dozen other options that can be used for other things, because that's what makes this game so great and why I personally prefer it over the games you describe.

Elden ring is my favorite game of all time, and I was glued to the game while waiting for their dlc announcement, and then after the long final stretch to the release, I hated it. It wasn't peak elden ring, it was something else, awkwardly attached to elden ring. I'm just not really fond of playing pre-made characters, that's the only bit that really bothers me, I really enjoy character creators and builds it's why I couldn't get into Sekiro(katana only, really?) in terms of Souls games, even Bloodborne kind of forces you to play a certain way(gun in left hand, trick weapon in the other) so if the new pre-made characters have proficiencies in certain weapon types what is the point in trying out other weapons ones through the match? Assuming there are new weapons. From Software are no stranger to reused assets and what can sometimes seem original isn't if you do a bit of digging so that part is fine by me(Vengarl is Radhan for example lol). The cynic in me wonders if they'll keep adding new characters post-launch and introduce a gatcha mechanic, It's happening to the BotW/Genshin type Monster Hunter game it can happen here. One hope is that they figure out how to make casual-friendly multiplayer. My personal experience was that Dark Souls and even Elden Ring multiplayer was too clunky to convince most of the people to engage with it. You would think that for the explicitly co-op version of their game, they would figure out lobbies, friend lists, or something else to make the procedure of queuing up with your friends or random strangers efficient and straightforward. From the dev interviews so far, it seems we're still using the password system, at least. Another thing I am skeptical about is the bosses. Bosses always lose their challenge when played with a summon, whether it's a quest npc summon, spirit ashes, or an online player. This is why people keep trying to beat the bosses solo: it's not as fun when the boss switches to the other character, and you just do whatever you want. Most of the attacks are designed to catch one character off-guard, the other ones just catch strays sometimes. Most of the time, one guy tanks the attacks (by dodging or blocking), and other people poke the boss with impunity. To make it more fun than that, you would have to adjust the boss behaviors, add new attacks, probably rework their scripting in a fundamental way. I am skeptical whether we'll see the next evolution of the boss design for fromsoft games in this new title.

I did not know they were still going to use the password system? Have you watched VaatiVidya’s video? He covers a lot on the information we got about the game. My hopes was that they were going to create a better multiplayer experience because I certainly agree with you, it’s a hassle. Another thing Vaati covers is the bosses, his take on the trailer and information we received is that the bosses will have a multi-targeted system that will probably provide a much better multiplayer experience. But we won’t know all things until we receive the game.
@unrighteous874512 сағат бұрын
@@steven__bills1011 The PC Gamer video that Vaati is referencing mentions that multiplayer is password based, but who knows if it's been improved at all. From the trailer, the new wolf boss seems to have huge sweeping attacks, which should help challenge multiple players. However, with how many re-used assets there may be, I do worry about the challenge presented there. Elden Ring DLC AI has the bosses whipping around mid-combo to target other players, and I seriously hope they don't repeat that for Nightreign, but that's probably what's going to happen.

What other soulslike has a roguelike element? There’s a few stand alone games (that are mid at best) but this is genuinely innovative and you’re selling it as the series being dead for not innovating. How can this simultaneously be a huge departure for Fromsoft and them refusing to innovate or create something new. Honestly? This is exactly the game I wanted them to make. The combat of a souls game, but in smaller playable chunks I can tackle with friends. And it’s being marketed that why by being a stand alone game at a lower price. What an unserious person. “Astro bot won game of the year, and I wanted shadow to win but also it’s bad”. Seriously this is some goof shit. Everything from Dark Souls 2's leveling system to DS3's map design to Elden Ring's empty areas. If you really want to look at the "B-Team," Armored Core 6 was made during the production of Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree with only initial involvement from Miyakazi. It had a different director and is as far from the Souls formula as FromSoft has been in 12 years, and AC6 is a very solid, well-polished and compelling game. "B-Team" just an excuse. @soyborne I’m on NG+9 and I’m still having a blast. Some players like you have found ways to basically make the game a boss rush but that’s that doesn’t appeal to me really. I like having fun with the different builds that I come up with, testing the builds out in the field so that I can get accustomed to the attack timings, and the ultimately test out the build against the bosses. The game has so much variety that it’s pretty easy to get carried away with how many builds you can try out. But everyone can find multiple ways to enjoy Elden Ring which is why is such a great game.

@@AstonishingRed Lol I did sort of turn it into a boss rush game haha. But hey I can still explore and stuff which I still do from time to time. That's what's great about elden ring. Sure 80% of the game isn't worth revisiting very much haha. But that 20% is FIRE and I don't mind re experiencing that 80% if I haven't done it in months. Game is so huge that I str8 up forget what a lot of the more meh areas were like. So re experiencing them almost feels new and fresh. And moving about in the game world feels sooo good that I kind of don't mind exploring, even when it's the less interesting areas of the game. One thing I gotta say though about my scum saves that I REALLY love. Grinding for stuff like golden vow craftables or worse, the radiant baldachins blessing which there's only 1 of per playthrough and once you use it, it's gone! I'm able to abuse the crap out of these items now without fear of running out lol. It kind of feels like cheating haha. Wait did you say ng plus 9? Lol brother... I'm on new game plus 200 something and I'm max level and that's just one of my accounts. So you can see why I got bored of horse riding around every freakin place hahahahahaha.

What if Fromsoft had a plan with Elden Ring. What if they made this new IP to lure in all the casual gamers only to then crap out lower quality cash grab slop that these casuals are already accustomed to purchasing time and time again. The same people who buy every trendy game and the yearly cod.

@@OknahidwinYes souls was very niche when it first released with Demons souls, wich is why it gained a cult following, because it released during a time when games held the players hand and Demons souls broke the mold.

@DionPanday wrong it never was. Demon souls isn't even a good game 💀. The future games are far far better and they have a much bigger following. None of these games are difficult

@@Oknahidwin I agree Sekiro , Bloodborne and Elden ring are all fairly easy games. Im just saying that Demons souls released during a time when games were so easy that it made it seem like Demon souls was harder than it actually is (Arkham asylum, Assasins creed 2, Modern warfare 2 etc.) and yes the future games had a bigger following because the games started out niche with Demons souls.

Or maybe we can acknowledge that there are people who like multiplayer roguelite games? Y'all call it a low quality cash grab because it isn't exactly what YOU want. Is this what the word brat means?
@unrighteous874518 сағат бұрын
I was initially very skeptical about this, but I think it could be fun. I rolled my eyes when I saw the Nameless King, but honestly more variety is probably good for this type of game as long as they put a good amount of effort into creating new bosses and enemies too. If it's 90% repeats, I'm going to be disappointed. I want new gameplay. Other than that, my biggest worry is that multiplayer will be the usual garbage implementation. Multiplayer will carry this game, and if it doesn't work the game WILL suck. Seeing that it's either 1 or 3 players doesn't give me much hope. Seamless co-op is up to 6 players, and completely opens up Elden Ring by removing invisible walls and enabling Torrent for everyone. Why is a single modder capable of making multiplayer 100x more fun that what FromSoft can do?
@jesterofjuice513213 сағат бұрын
Exactly, all these strange little switch ups just put me on edge. I still think it's going to be fun, but there's also something cheap looking about it, which is why I chose to describe it as concerning rn

I'm reminded of the scene from Rocky 5 where Rocky tries to convince Tommy to not sell out begging him not to go with the shady manager. Here we are in a similar predicament, begging fromsoft not to go with sony. Not to chase after the money but it may just be too late.

This release gives the impression of a $40 asset flip whch was made to chase the rougelike trend that has been getting steadily oversaturated in recent years whilst also simutaneously mooching of the success of the Elden Ring IP.

However Nightreign itself shakes out I think it's a good thing that From is at least confident enough to try some wildly divergent spins on the souls formula. "Classic souls, but more and bigger" is tapped out, continuing to increase the scale past the already massive elden ring is not feasible and "elden ring, again" isn't gonna fly even if they could climb that massive budget and development hill again - the game's own DLC fails to bottle this lightning a second time. As a roguelike-liker Nightrein's concept is intriguing and even if it falls flat it may be laying the groundwork for a future game. As far as refining the classic formula goes my money is on Round8 & Neowiz now. A smaller scoped project like Lies of P can focus in on refining and innovating a handful of core mechanics in a way From as a victim of their own success probably no longer can, as anything they put out in this back-to-basics vein is going to be compared unfavourably and perhaps unfairly to elden ring

"they've gone from saying Elden Ring won't be getting any more content" No one at FromSoftware ever said that. Miyazaki said the Shadow of the Erdtree would be the only Elden RIng DLC, and that there are no plans for an Elden Ring sequel. He did say “However, this does not mean that we are denying the development of the IP.”

Yeah, he also has attacks with jump punishes much like every single other SOTE boss except maybe Metyr. I remember him lamenting the lack of that in his original video, when it was really all there. And it's sad to see, because he has now formed this B-team opinion based on his first playthrough when the amount of learning the community has done since then could easily fix that.
@Виктор-ч7х1щ22 сағат бұрын
@@Sinhsseax What are his jump punishes? I kinda only found low profile and strafe punishes. Also you can jump over Metyr's side finger thrust. Yeah it was one of the saddest videos unironically especially the final part where he says he want from to milk ER forever with micro dlcs. Also wild that he called Rellana miniboss I can just imagine fighting 2 of them or her in 2nd phase and a bunch of black knights
@Sinhsseax20 сағат бұрын
@@Виктор-ч7х1щ There's his stomp of course. He has two variants: 1)The one that's the starter for his main combo. It can't be punished with slow weapons. (Much like Godfrey's) But it can be jumped in both phases and combined with the strafing can maybe allow for a no roll of his main combo even in phase 2. 2)A singular stomp that he does after his repositioning run. It can be punished with slow weapons, but it's rare. Allegedly he can also combo it into more stomps, which I couldn’t confirm. Both have to be jumped extremely early, but it's important that his foot itself has no hitbox so it's safe at all distances. Then there's his sideways uppercut. It can be jumped after moving a slight distance away and only be punished by longer / ranged weapons. In second phase you need to jump it sideways to avoid the pillars of light, but it works surprisingly well. Thanks for the info on Metyr. I might try that soon. It's very nice to have such an exchange of experience.
