You make a great point, but Fromsoft is also known for their deep lore that can take years to untangle or even just properly explore, so comparing them to Nintendo which doesn't really care about the lore for their games is a bit of an unfair example to use. I fear that a lot of people are going to simply dislike the game due to it not being a traditional FSW experience, since the studio built up a reputation for their games being a complete package.

Yeah, the "circle closing in" seems to just be a necessity to herd players and not let them hoard equipment too easily. It gives you a sense of urgency and forces you to be more tactical about where you want to loot the random equipment. In a Battle Royale the circle enforces player interactions and fights. I would almost call the comparison superficial but it's not exactly that clean cut either. They have pretty different functions and end goal, but their practical effect is similar, player urgency.

@dr17719 People sometimes use the terms more interchangeably, but realistically this would be more of a rogue-lite than like. I have seen some people also accept "like" if a game otherwise adheres more strictly to the formula even without a perma death, but more commonly perma death is one of the main distinctions between lite and like.

The thing is, I am not very worried, for a few reasons. So, for one, even though this is not being directed by Miyazaki, the person who is directing it, Junya Ichizaki, was a level designer for DS1, and a combat designer for both Bloodborne and Elden Ring. He has been at Fromsoftware for a bit, so he knows what he is doing, at the very least. And as a combat designer, he will certainly know how to make the combat feel good. He has that kind of expertise, and from what we have seen, he has done exactly that. Made the combat more fluid, and the movement more fluid, while making it flashy as well. It looks good, and looks like it feels good. Secondly, this is a spin-off game. I feel like a lot of people that are worried are worried because they are expected a main series kinda game. This isn't really that. How I am thinking about it is that it is the Monster Hunter Rise of Elden Ring. Part of the Elden Ring series (Just as Rise is a part of the Monster Hunter series), but not a mainline game. A offshoot that takes more risks. And of course, this game does take more risks. It isn't a traditional souls-like, it is a survival co-op game, after all. Not to mention not having a character creator, and having Heroes instead. It is all a risk, and Fromsoft needs to take those kinds of risks to stay afloat as a company. I am not worried about the crossover, either, for a few reasons. One, I think this gives old DS bosses an amazing chance to be remade, and updated, for a modern audience. We have already seen that Centipede Demon was updated to focus more on splitting apart and trying to overwhelm the player. That sounds much more fun than what he was previously, and assumedly that kind of treatment will be given to all the Dark Souls bosses being brought over. And the lore implications don't really matter too much, because of the fact that it is a divergent timeline, from the time of the shattering. I am sure that the game will be fun, and will hold us over as more and more Fromsoft games come out. Thanks for reading.

The director said the dark souls bosses will be present due to the influences of the night lord and they helped create a sense of confusion and panic reflecting the intimidating encroachment of night. Which is one of the characteristics of the game. As night draws in these beings from another world showing up would help create that ironically new feeling the night tide provides. He also asked Miyazaki and Tanimura for permission to use them, so they are 100% supposed to be dark souls characters, not a reskin. He did also say only a few will be present. We'll have to wait and see which other bosses end up in there. Funnily enough something like curse rotted great wood might actually end up being a good boss with a dedicated coop system.

"Re-used Assets" is a stupid argument, ever made by those people. I don't see them complaining when Pokemon models are re-used over and over and over again with their favourites. I don't see them complaining about Monster Hunter's own Monsters being re-used. I don't see them complaining about guns, sound designs, Objects and Obstacles, being re-used in their COD games. So those complaints are not valid. It depends on how they're used. Yes, Elden Ring did pad them out too much but still there is a lot more content to offer than just those as well. Those are flaws, yes. However, those flaws doesn't necessarily outweigh the positives. Hence why people can overlook it. If you can't, that's your problem to me. It's how it is handled and if it does better than most, I'm more than happy with it. Some people want to see them again in newer versions of the games. That's all there is. Plus it saves time. That's still their asset.

@xxephonАй бұрын
but they'd never actually implement the success of seamless coop into the mainline games. i dont think the souls games needed a dedicated coop system, but elden ring really did. the game was massive and focused on exploration, it should've been much simpler to coop. not only that, but making torrent unusable during coop? so stupid, it made it so much more tedious to explore as a group. if they're going to stick to larger open world exploration games, they need a proper multiplayer system. for more linear, smaller worlds like the souls games, then their current system is justifiable (even if most players wouldn't like it)
@Asriel_CypherАй бұрын
@@fishman21-f5b That depends on who you're looking at. I don't think FromSoft was ever interested in telling full stories and just like to confuses people. Hence why none of their stories and lore are ever completed when it needs to. They never answered full lore questions either. Only add some here and there. Left the mysteries to pile up. That's like their M.O here. Plus Nightrein is a spin-off. So it isn't canon. Nothing to worry there either. It's just that FromSoft while like to build worlds, all of their stories that leads to somewhere, often doesn't have a conclusive end. It's just how it is. So putting a random boss from their previous games is definitely isn't going to answer anything in Lore. They also never answered what players have asked before in videos. No point asking about Lore when the Dev themselves won't answer you.

@xxephon I think Elden Ring saw the potential in Seamless Co-Op mod, and decided to try something like that. I'm glad that they saw that many people wanted a Co-Op adventure Elden Ring type game. Now that they added more fluidity to the game, it might evolve or grow from their usual sluggish movement design. We don't know yet though. We know that there's charms in these types of sluggish movements in combat, sure. However, I think they wanted to be more cinematic types too. Hence they added so much cool and stylish combat arts as shown in the trailer. I hope they add little things at at time and see where it goes.

I'm excited for something so different. I'm glad Miyazaki is encouraging new ideas. Its a spin off where they can try weird stuff without the story holding it back. I will also point out that the different set characters have different playstyles that will appeal to different people. Whether it be ranged play, Sekiro style deflecting, Bloodborne fast dashes, big tanky guy, well rounded knight, complex sorcerer, summoner and more. All have a fast pace to them and the experience will end up familiar but fresh compared to the original Elden Ring. That experience of quickly clearing an area and having to make do with the gear you get is quite rewarding. Also team play will be much greater with actual synergy between characters, which is another strength of the predefined character system.

After looking up for information, I think that my biggest gripe is this to be called "Elden Ring" , when is evident this is gonna be a crossover, because I ve seen a lot of reusing bosses accusations when that is actually the point, to use every stuff for the games prior; characters, bosses, mechanics, etc etc. Probably it would had be seen with better eyes if it was just called "Nightreign", to confirm this has little relation with the Elden Ring we loved. This game is quite unique for what Fromsoftware does, so the name does indeed seems weird.

The team involved here has access to the same lore bible that GRR Martin wrote for Elden Ring and, even without Miyazaki, they're almost certainly going to follow it. The events of Nightreign won't be canon to the main Elden Ring story, but the setting and universe should be the same because most of it happened before the timeline split. Margit may have a different fate in the spinoff, but he should have the same motivations, values and attitudes. While I don't expect it to be lore heavy, I still think we may get some additional details that help clarify the backstory and setting. Without Miyazaki's stingy approach to lore, we may even get some bombshells.

It's Monster Hunter. The more I read about it the less I think its a roguelike and the more I think it's just Fromsoft's take on monster hunter. You have a central hub, small maps suitable 45 minute missions where you collect consumables and target a big main boss balanced around small group co-op or single player, character classes with locked in weapon arts/movesets, you have no levels or skill points and your only way for character progression is through some sort of gear progression with tokens you get from defeating bosses. I'm not a fan of roguelikes, but I would be in absolute love with a mh style souls game. I got into monster hunter because I enjoyed fighting souls bosses so much, and monster hunter basically is nothing but my favorite part of dark souls set in a different environment. This plus MH Wilds basically means I won't be playing any other games in 2025. Hopefully we're destined to finally get a From x Monster Hunter collaboration with the two releases in the same year!

I think the idea that the universes of the base game and Nightrein became parallel from the shattering is really interesting. If everything before the shattering is the same, this should mean that we might learn parts of the puzzle that were otherwise hidden by Marika/Radigon or lost to time. Especially about the Nox. The part in the trailer where the player character climbs up a wall seems to depict an eternal city above ground, with similar architecture and blue flame torches. This I think heavily favors the idea that the night lord is the lord of night discussed in the base game. If so, this could be a world in which Ranni continued to work with the eternal cities after the night of the black knives instead of betraying them.

Fromsoft has more than earned my full support and trust. I honestly want to have more novel and experimental games but so many companies have let me down that more often than not I’m hesitant. Fromsoft is one of the few exceptions. Armored Core 6 showed me they have so much potential beyond their famous Dark Souls formula and seeing them tapping into it so readily is so gratifying to me. I want them to wow and surprise me with new ideas while still respecting and building off their past accomplishments. Ofc if they still release more traditional souls like titles I’m here for it, but I’m also very intrigued with their more niche or novel experiences. My exact same thoughts on what the boss design will probably be, if we’re getting old bosses back, then that means that they’re probably gonna revamp them to some extent. Bosses like Nameless King were you know, designed for DS3’s combat, DS3 didn’t have guard counters, or jump attacks, and while they could work with co-op, not to the extent Nightreign seems to be pushing. This means that if they want these bosses to have as much impact as in their original games, they’re gonna have to make some adjustments I think (especially considering how Nightreing seems to have changed some core game aspects like running speed and such). We’re basically getting Inner bosses like with Sekiro, **we’re getting fucking Inner Nameless King bro do you understand?**
@sleep_enjoyer13Ай бұрын
Although this may be true, I don't think these return bosses will be as well designed for coop as the new ones they designed from the ground up. The main bosses will likely all be entirely unique to nightreign such as the Cerberus lookalike and I'm thinking maybe the centaur boss is another main encounter. I'm referring to the end boss of the three day cycle as a 'main boss'.
@rily2885Ай бұрын
not to mention the creative potential for encounters, we asked for prime Radhan for a while and we had to wait for a big DLC to even consider it, even as it is now people are disatisfied with his role in the story, having this wacky alternative universe premise may allow us to see some really interesting encounters without needing to tackle a story that makes it possible, like fighting Cal as an inquisitor in star wars fallen order, we could get some non canon variations of fights that may be straight up fan service, but the last time we had that was probably in DS3 so why not?

This feels like the kind of thing you'd see from game devs in the 90s or early 00s. Nightreign is to Elden Ring as Counter Strike was to Half Life or Mavel vs Capcom was to Street Fighter. Trust in Ratatoskr to speak some sense. Honestly though, I said the exact same thing last night; this game is a younger cousin to Elden Ring, the Hyrule Warrior of FromSoft. More risks, more attempts at trying new things (which may succeed or not), but I like that they are taking this approach going forward. Let’s not forget that FS has a tendency to showcase and implement mechanics into their games, only to reinsert them in later installment after being polished and perfected. In this case, it does seem like co-op experiences is the focus. Now we will get a mainly co-op action game with a fast environment, this will allow FS to experiment on new things for the next mainline game. As someone else said in a comment, this will be Monster Hunter Rise for Elden Ring. I have high faith in what we will be given in 2025.

I think it's easy to forget that many franchises that are now notorious for being repetitive and formulaic used to be innovative and ground-breaking. Modern Warfare was a revolutionary title amongst a sea of WWII shooter clones at its time of release, and even Pokemon managed to capitalize on people's attachment for their creatures to become the largest media franchise in the world. But both of them are now just seen as the mandatory copy-paste slop release every 1-2 years. I'm glad that Fromsoft isn't just resting on their laurels even if it would be safer to do, because with SotE's release I've even felt the formula started to wear thin. "Just as still waters turn foul, stagnation leads to decay. Warriors must remain ever-drifting." - Blue Cloth Cowl item description.

I like to think of the From Soft Worlds as parallel universes, which all existed isolated from each other but there can still be some kind of bleed-over as they are all centered around these world-trees we can see in all of the Souls-Games, the Bloodborne Hub and the Elden Beast Boss fight area. This seems to be similar to what Stephen King did in his Dark Tower novels, where the Tower is like the centerpiece of all his novels and sometimes there is some contact made between them, but they are all they separate, self-contained stories.

My perspective is very simple: my reasoning for not liking Nightreign is the game mechanics. I believe Fromsoft will make the game great. I believe they will make it very engaging. But I just don't like the genre of this game. Rouge-like, time survival, no character creation(determine hero class), coop, multiverse story... Everything here I don't like. It's not bad but I just don't play this genre of games. I don't mind if Fromsoft wants to make a game like this in a different setting but because it's in Elden Ring world so there will be lore implications that I just don't want to miss. So even though I don't like the genre, I still have to play it if suddenly a boss like Godwyn appears. I'm fine with reused assets but doing it this much makes Nightreign feel more like a DLC than a new game. Even though you can play solo, I believe the game now balances for coop so I don't know if it's fun playing solo. I know I'm being "SILLY" and I just don't need to play it if I don't like it but feeling left out of a new Fromsoft game is very depressing for me. I trust fromsoft, I know the game will be great but I don't know if the game will be great for me. This uncertainty just makes me doubt everything. Tell me I'm stupid, tell me I'm being silly but this is just what I'm feeling and I hate that I'm feeling this way.

I'm a doomer about with nearly everything but Fromsoft is the only one I can't be a doomer for until now and that's depressing for me. Still in the beginning I also didn't like Sekiro, I didn't even like Dark Souls the first time I played them but when I learned how truly to play, these games became my favorite. I maybe can try to learn to like Nightreign but still, the GENRE is a really tall wall to climb as I never like any of them. I know Fromsoft wants to experiment but this just feels cheap... Now I even wonder why wasting time making this and not filling in the empty spaces in the Shadow of the Erdtree?
