This would have worked a whole lot more as a 90 minute samurai film with a bit of supernatural elements rather than a Onimusha anime. I theorized that the Oni gauntlet in this anime is the same gauntlet used to seal Nobunaga and has debilitating effects to whomever uses it that is not a true Onimusha or a reincarnated Oni.

Remember that at the beginning of dawn of dreams said that after Nobunaga's defeat, the massive army of genma that plagued that land vanished? I'm impressed that they're even around after their God was defeated.
@Xanqiev Жыл бұрын
I was expecting to have some explanation about how they returned, but yeah, the show was not worried about explaining that
@Blaxzero Жыл бұрын
Truth. I figure since soki sacrificed himself to destroy the omen star, tenkai sealed the gauntlet and akane defeats munenori in the sekigahara post dawn of dreams. I drew the conclusion most of the genma are small remnants from the past games feeding off of human greed for gold as seen in the anime

Ahhhh! Good music choice brother. Love DoD score. I wasn't feeling the "loosing your humanity" Plot, but I get why they went that route, otherwise Mushashi would just steamroller everything. Not a bad adaptation overall.

Maybe Miyamoto Musashi in anime is same person in dawn of dream, he has officially appears on Manga "Night of Genesis" the prequel to the (Shin) Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams video game before that has manga twilight of desire and Novel
@DanishThePenguin Жыл бұрын
I don't think he appears in Twilight of Desire, but he does appear in volume 2 of Night of Genesis. The problem here is that there's nothing referencing those events and he even acts in contrary to what we see in his manga appearance, so I consider this anime to be non-canon as of right now
@VGarcia1984 Жыл бұрын
@@DanishThePenguinexactly i was thinking that too bcoz if not mistakened Akane meet a younger Musashi in the manga and in the anime for him to not completely mentions any events that happened in the manga only gives me the conclusion that the anime was non canon💁🏻♀️💯🙅🏻♀️ its impossible for Musashi in the manga to forget his journey with Akane Jubei

The only compliment i could give for this series is that at least Capcom REMEMBERS this franchises exists and now more people are starting to get into the franchise thanks to this. Still never get over the fact the there is no Proper HD collection and Yes while we have Warlords HD i feel like the rest deserves the same treatment. Maybe and hopefully after this anime, we'll get something out of this franchise. Be it a remasters of the rest of the games or a new game, I mean,like you mentioned we are getting a new Dragon Dogma so who's to say we won't be get a new Onimusha game ? I can only hope i guess.

Great video. I'm kind of worried what the future holds if they decide to go further with the series and introduce new games/remakes. Most of the people who worked on the Onimusha games (especially the writers) have probably left Capcom a long time ago. It's kind of like the issue I have with the recent RE remakes, inconsistencies with the story and the retcons to the lore.

Who better to watch a review than the what if onimusha series creator!!!
@Jacob1451_Kapnobatai Жыл бұрын
I've felt the same. Don't mind the character of Musashi. An Onimusha 5 based on the anime could be really good. Series was too fast paced without enough time to grow attached to the character. Action is decent. Don't really like most of the lore changes. Disappointingly average, and I was really excited. They could salvage this series by making future seasons 1:1 retellings of the games easily. You put all my thoughts into this review.
@DanishThePenguin Жыл бұрын
I don't think a full re-telling of the games would be necessary, but it would need to fit in with the rest of the canon of Onimusha. Perhaps, given how much I've been dabbling in creative writing with my What Ifs lately, I could try my hand at my own rewrite for the series

OK so as someone who watched the anime and also played the games, I feel like it completely shit on Musashi Miyamoto. I understand that the franchise took liberty with the other protagonist, but at the same time, the fact that he struggled with controlling the gauntlet and the Oni powers(yes, I understand. He was older, but still) is crazy.
@gwyneveresunlightblade5962 Жыл бұрын
If they had kept some of the music and characters from the game, I would have liked it a lot more. Would not hold up to rewatches for me. I totally agree about not regarding it as canon. 😢
@anmanarrative Жыл бұрын
I don't really have anything to add because you basically addressed all the same issues I had with the series. I really think this could have been good if it was it's own original thing, or go the other way and make more elements faithful to the games. It was a very disappointing watch. I didn't know Musashi was in the manga, now I'm even more sad nothing from the games stories was utilised here. One thing I will say is that I liked Alfred. I liked how hammy he was because he reminded me of the more hammy Genma villains, especially my favourite Guildenstern. In fact with the talk of laboratories, the creation of the centaur warrior and just how out of place he was (seriously I have no idea how he came to join Iemon at all), I was hoping it would be revealed that he was a proper high ranking Genma in disguise (a lot of them do have western names after all). That he was the one who gave Iemon the power and that he would reveal his true form for the final battle. But that was too much to hope for.

Great video I didn't like how they change the Oni, but I think I can understand why they change the Genma. After all, their top guys were killed and probably hunted in the aftermath Dawn of Dreams so the ones that are in the anime are not the cream of the crop so they look nothing more than mutated humans because they no longer have the expertise and capability to resurrect and turn humans into Genma we know, likely the weaker ones that require less to survive. Which is also maybe why they didn't resurrect any known historically big players of the Sengoku period. I don't think any mention of named Genma would have changed much, the current generation of humans would not have known them anyway. I think the time period makes it hard to include Genma in. Assuming Musashi doesn't make it out and his historical year of death is 1645. The anime may have taken place in 1645, 63 years after Nobunaga's death, 40 years after the battle of Sekigahara, 30 years after the last major armed opposition to the Tokugawa shogunate, there is no way for a major Genma come back with no conflicts and they are definitely not gonna show Tokugawa shogunate allying with the Genma early in its reign, maybe near the end of it would have been better.
@DanishThePenguin Жыл бұрын
Due to a particular context clue, I'm actually of the belief that this anime takes place in 1624. Musashi mentions having met a character 20 years beforehand, and looking at the year of said character's historical death labels said death to have occured in 1604, so I'm fairly certain that 1624 is fairly accurate

Didn’t really give a shit about issens. Pretty dime-a-dozen anime move. But yeah, it bothered me a lot that 90% of the “genma” were just veiny humans with long/extra arms.

Such a disappointment as an onimusha series. I'm not sure why they didn't focus on any of the main characters from the games. The scene where Musashi absrobed the souls felt very fan servicey. Also he removed the gauntlet!? Not sure why there were no oni weapons, or enemies from the games except the most basic genma. 5/10 as an anime , 3/10 as an onimusha series.
@icchampion5 Жыл бұрын
I was anticipating this, and share your sentiments. Iemon was a weak villain. It would've better shown how he got access to create the Genmna, or why he never became a Genma himself. I think this was better off as a movie than a series.
@viktor-rp7xl6 ай бұрын
I think toshiros yojimbo is a more relatable character than his musashi which is kind of more fantasy than yojiro who is a regular man and the story of getting old and pushing on is real. There was no genma bosses or lore nothing. Really was like a terrible ninja scroll. It’s not rewatchable and really sucked. The same musashi story all over again. I guess they were trying to copy 2 w the gold mine and forest settings but it was the Genma and background how they appeared that made it interesting.

if i was kind enough the anime was mild, it was overhype for big onimusha fans even myself. Animation and art good, story wasn't what i hope didn't feel like onimusha, felt like the last samurai movie. Don't know why they made the oni clan like some monsters or bad guys, i get that Musashi would be scare to become onimusha like the first time Samanosuke transform but Samanosuke was able to control and accept it. No reference maybe one or two like. More than 10 years finally a onimusha anime, Musashi as a main from historical is good and they motion capture him like Samanosuke, Jubei, and Jacques, it just didn't deserve to be onimusha they didn't do better.
