As an American truck driver and a coe lover I find your equipment very interesting. Here in the USA the coe is gone American drivers won't drive them it's why the market died. Our trucks would never work where your at. Our standard trailer length is 53ft long my freightliner wheel base 250 inches long total combined length is 70ft. Gross vehicle weight is no more than 40tons. As we say here in the states keep the rubber side down in the shiny side up and see you on the flip side.

Tag axle all day, We used to have a 9m long twin axle and with the tag you could get it almost anywhere you wanted. You need to live with one for 6 months before you choose a tag over a mid lift.

@@ScottAndrews I know, But my point still stands Scott. You will never pick a mid over a tag.
@multiManchoo5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely 👍🏻. Mid is just a cost saving idea that came out due to changes in the law and weights increase. Mid are rubbish on turning circles and reversing, never mind traction. Tag all day long, I’ve had them on heavy haulage and low loaders for 18 years. Only thing mid lifts are good for is straight line motorway wood that’s it. Drivers have to spend time with tags and have there driving pushed to the limits in traction and access with weight, once you have you’ll never go back to cheap mid lifts. I still driver a 2016 Scania 520 V8 stick shift because old school stands the test of time 👍🏻😁

Tags might be alright where your weight distribution is fixed but we have a 65 plate 460 XF tag on bulk milk tanker work and for 95% of the work it's a hindrance as we can't get any traction on farm roads in the wet when on any sort of incline. As you'll know, you can't raise the tag when loaded so the only thing you have available is the diff lock or dumping the air. The latter works to get you going, but it takes about 2 mins for the suspension to reset itself and you can't override it. While the air is dumped you can't drive either as the mud guards are sat touching the top of the drive axle and tag tyres, so the function is basically useless. Also, when reversing into a tight yard, the tag tyre scrub is absolutely horrific as you're essentially forcing the tyre sidewards with 44 tonne sat on it. The only time the tag is useful is in one of farms where we have a stand trailer. It would normally be a long reverse for half a mile up his track but you drive in, drop your lines, push in the shunt button and screw it round in one go without the unit or trailer fouling on anything. When the DAF is in for service and we have to take the Actros (6x2/2) mid lift, you can't screw it round because of the length of the wheelbase and you can't do shunts either because you have to jack through more than 90 degrees and that means that the trailer is moving backwards at the same time it's pivoting on its bogey, resulting in the rear underrun bar fouling on the wall. Give us manual control of the tag lift when loaded (even if only temporary) then they'd be fine. Ride wise, they're definitely choppier on the motorway than a 6x2 mid but you do get used to it.
@virtueofhate17789 ай бұрын
"As you'll know, you can't raise the tag when loaded..." Well actually you can, it just depends on where you are. Here in the Nordics a truck with a tag axel that can't be raised when fully loaded is as usefull as a nuns c•nt, so manufacturers change the programming to allow it.

Tag axle on dafs are great. Shame the chassis is so long though. My Volvo mid next to one of our daf tags shows the daf chassis is way long. Fun to drive. Our wing tops are scratched like crazy from all the weird and wonderful places too, just can’t be helped though. Great vid bro.
@ScottAndrews5 жыл бұрын
Saw you had a new Volvo. Our trailers are quite low so no avoiding the scratches even on the flat :(
@robsmith82725 жыл бұрын
Volvos doing 5mpg fully freighted at the moment so may be short lived. Got a Scania S500 on demo at the moment may be going that way soon. We suffer mostly sideways scuffs on the wing tops, going up ramps onto the flat and then turning while the trailers still on the hill, trailers all have very angular chassis designs which catch and scuff :(. Few drivers have scuffed picking up and dropping trailers too because of the lack of slide rails on the back end. Also don’t know about you but I didn’t really rate the 530, thought the 510 was more pokey and the Eco mode caused the gearbox to seriously derp.

If you switch your engine off at traffic lights or in traffic jams etc allegedly it improves your score Obviously I have driven newish days quite a bit but is the score based on the truck or is it based on a drivers digital tachograph so whichever daf truck a driver puts their digi card in it continues the score from the previous daf truck score etc or do you improve another drivers score in each truck a person drives etc Just asking because as I am an agency driver that is in a variety of trucks etc we are effectively remote based and don't get briefed by a company as such we pretty much go by the info on drivers boards in transport offices etc
@ScottAndrews5 жыл бұрын
Score on the dash is tied to the truck only. You don't carry it with your card. If a company does monitor driving score it's usually a separate system to the truck score and that is monitored by the tacho card.
@numberplateguy85115 жыл бұрын
@@ScottAndrews So for those in the same truck j week in week out it would apply to truck and card but for agency drivers it would probably still apply for truck and card Eg company would see what the score is in that truck before and after agency driver shift which would also appear on agency drivers digital card too Because as I'm in a variety of puddle jumpers lol the truck score is always different but usually between 57-67 ish due to many agency drivers driving most of the trucks etc

Good vid, I love my daf Xf Tag, when I first drove a tag I wasn’t shor but know I would prity much chose tag over mid every day. The only main Negative with the tag is when up and empty the unit bobs a lot compared to a mid. But you just learn to live with it.. They are the best for farms and tight yards. I have had plenty other drivers tell me I cannot spin a truck around in some yards and actually I can with a tag and a lift axle on trl. After driving scania for years I am liking the DAF as well. And it was a good to see you at TF South West.

As a US driver, we really don't get all the axle options you have. It is basically just single or tandem drives. Could you elaborate on why midlift is preferred over the tag? I would assume they are similar outside manuverabillity, but that seems to be incorrect.

Manoeuvrability is the main difference between a mid and a tag. Tag is more manoeuvrable but is also slightly less comfortable as it bounces more.
