My thoughts on the Walmart Birkin...

There was a TED talk a few years ago by a clothing and luxury goods industry counterfeit expert. The gist of her talk was that while it was important to control the existence of knockoffs to ensure companies maintain their trademarks and reputations, but that counterfeits and cheap knockoffs never actually take business away from luxury brands. Her main point was that the people who buy knockoffs, dupes and fakes would NEVER buy the real thing anyway because they are two totally separate price levels and markets

I think dupes are so great. You get the looks for an extremely affordable price without support black market fakes. I fully support it for those who can’t afford the real deal.

agree! some people don’t want a slightly different “high quality” bag that’s still like a couple hundred dollars… they want EXACTLY the same shape and style etc. and the dupe is an accessible option for them. you can’t argue logically with others preferences. Just like when people want authentic birkins and others try to change their mind about how shallow it is or it’s not the right brand for them for whatever reason. it’s our prerogative

I live a 1/2 mile from a Walmart. I managed to find an available Walmart Birkin on their website. I ordered it 12/30 - a 25 green (looks malachite or vert cypress, not sure which). It’s scheduled for delivery on 1/9. I’m looking forward to having a “Birkin” type bag that I can kick around and take with me on my Walmart outings. I don’t know how good the Walmart bag will be and I’ve never seen a Birkin in person. If the bag is bad I can return to Walmart.

My understanding is that the Hermes Birkin and Kelly are trademarked by Hermes. Specific aspects of the design of each bag are trademarked. So even if these copies do not have an Hermes branding, they are still violating Hermes’ trademark because it’s not necessarily just the word “Hermes” that’s trademarked. It’s the specific design. The nature of fashion is that it’s always imitated. But these “Wilkins” are not inspired by the Birkin. They are trying to be an exact replica. Just wondering if these become successful enough. If Hermes will take any legal action for violation of their trademark.

Love your excitement for things. Especially the pop mart blind boxes. Really rooting for you to find the secret. It’ll happen soon Im sure! Thats so interesting that you owned and liked birkin style bags before you knew what they were. When I go in clothing shops I love looking at all the handbag styles and boring my son telling him what bag they were inspired by. He always tells me he doesn’t care 😂😂 I was told years ago before social media took off that you could only buy a birkin if you knew someone who already owned one and that person personally recommended you to Hermes as a client. Sounded like some weird secret club. I think I read it in a magazine. See dupes everywhere. I dont like fakes but I think dupes are more like fashion items/trends and thats the style at the time. Might be safer than wearing a real one out. Just tell people its a wirkin. People at work thought I was mad getting my picotin but then a few months later they’ve spent more on a holiday cos that what they’re passionate about. We’re all different.

Hi Jess! I love my dupes and I have Birkin dupes as well. I think it is fine, because some people cannot afford or do not want to spend thousands on a bag. I am always transparent about my bags. I don’t try to fake it. Everyone should be allowed to buy what they want, and not be judged for it.

Yes, everyone's different. I think its about priorities, where you want to spend your money, your passion for it and how much can you spend. Because at the end of the day, a bag is just a bag and performs the same function be it a wirkin or birkin. Just like a car, you can own a toyota or a porsche. But at the end of the day its just a vehicle that helps you take you to one place to another.

Thanks Jessie for your thoughtful dissection of the Wirkin vs Birkin! Unfortunately I do judge people for carrying fake designer handbags. It tells me that person is pretentious. When I was young and broke I bought Coach and Anne Kline bags😅 but never pretended to be able to afford designers handbags by carrying fake bags. Also unfortunately people who ended up buying the Wirkin soon would realize they dont have the real thing. The bubble is gonna burst soon. But heck if it makes them happy for a few weeks let ‘em be! However, I too buy designer handbags and Hermes bags for the sole purpose of quality, style and craftsmanship not to show off my financial status. I’m sure i do get judged by others.

I have a Speedy, a Dior that looks like a Speedy,, a Ralph Lauren, and a coach that looks like Speedys. Among others. The style is the most repeated in my bag collection. I like the style. I don’t really consider them Speedy dupes, I think they’re just classic bags. I feel like Birkin dupes are similar to that. Classically styled bags, available in a ton of price ranges. As long as there are no faked logos, I don’t think it a bad thing. And for those of us who know handbags, we can spot the real deal at fifty paces. The mystique of the Birkin will remain.

Hate fakes. That is a whole topic on its own. Dupes are great. They let you get a style for not much money and if you love it so much then you know what you can aspire too. I stand by what I always say. Buy what you love. Live your life the way you like too. Stop judging people for these simple things. You must truly hate your own life if you must judge others. I bought a dupe for the YSL small Loulou and didn’t realize it. I think I bought it at Gabe’s. It was before I was into luxury brands and knew about YSL. I sold it on poshmark and found the YSL Loulou and bought it because I loved the bag and just wanted it in better quality nice leather!

I find the “Wirkin” trend interesting just from the standpoint of this crazy viral micro trend cycle we seem to currently be on. Birkin dupes have always been around, there have always been non branded bags in the style of the Birkin (and fakes if that is your thing) But why do they go crazy now? It all just feels like a marketing cycle to keep us spending

There was a huge Hermes Birkin/Kelly awareness before (thank God) social media, but the clientele was quite different. To own one was a right of passage, it was meant to pass down to a daughter, it meant Grace Kelly, Jackie Kennedy or your elegant, stylish, graceful grandmother owned one...(or several) and you aspired to their high standard.

I have three look a likes of Hermes Plume. Just received a navy velvet feel from Tiffany & Fred today. Absolutely love it. The have a pink like yours in the back. I can not afford the real or second hand. So Tiffany & Fred give me a bag I love. So is this the same as Walmart?

Hi Jess. I think the whole point of carrying a beautiful bag is because it makes you feel good! What does it matter what the brand happens to be? Would I buy it? No. I wouldn’t buy a dupe or fake because I don’t want inferior quality. I don’t want to put out money for a bag that won’t last. But I’m not judging someone who buys it. As long as it gives the person happiness with that bag who am I to judge? What I don’t like are certain people saying if you’re not carrying an actual Birkin you look poor. Which is not only awful but does that mean if I’m carrying a Fendi or Tory Burch or vintage Bally that is similar in shape that I look poor? Who even says that?! The people passing this judgement aren’t happy people obviously. I think live and let live. This world is crazy if that bag makes someone happy let them enjoy. And for those who think they’re one upping Birkin? They aren’t and we all know that. And they must know it too. I think it’s an attention thing.

The Wirkin is no dupe. Even without the H logo, it was copied almost to a tee. At least other brands that do dupes make twists to the designs so it won't scream fake. Mk and Coach make quite good dupes, among other contemporary brands.
