In Australia we are not allowed to carry a gun or a knife. I agree with Steve's comments below. I would add the "self defense" cane such as a Canemaster cane with appropriate training. I would list "tools' as follows: 1. firearm 2. Appropriate cane with training 3. Knife(s) 4. pepper spray-which I don't carry but use to when cycling-great on dogs! It may take 2 seconds to draw from concealment and fire or employ a knife. I got the hickory cane in my hand and can "whack" someone in less than a second. If I still need a firearm this gives me time to get it operating. I'm old and beat-up and can use the cane without using deadly force or with deadly force as necessary. Even if "justified" in using deadly force it doesn't mean you should-situational dependent. I have become a strong believer in the power of the cane with proper training and appropriate cane. I can't walk about with a gun or knife in my hand without getting shot or arrested. I carry the cane everywhere.
@wassermutt7805Ай бұрын
One thing I have been taught in self defense is be sure your knife is easily available to your nondominant hand. God forbid you have to pull your gun and for some reason some one grabs it, you want your knife accessible to your weak hand so you can hold the gun and defend yourself with the knife. Great video, those are the same three that I carry. In this state, the gun and even knife is your absolute last resort as they are a guaranteed prison sentence.

It's a multipurpose tool and weapon, already in hand, that can be dialed up or down in force depending on need, unlike a gun or knife. Like a low-tech Star Trek phaser, it goes from stun to kill. Ankle-nipper chihuahuas or chows can be rapped on the nose to get their attention. Growling mutts can be held away with the tip. 4-legged or 2-legged attackers can get full-power swings to drive off, disable, or neutralize, especially in defending against surprise attacks before unholstering #1.

As a UK based bodyguard I was limited, but not prohibited per se, of being armed. So I would carry a hardened tactical flashlight.And a Kevlar umbrella. Both are legally as one is a tool and the other very useful here in a rainy country. Both are also tools of the job too. The top one of course is training with them and in self defence. But the most important was research and investigation as knowing all the exits, alternative routes and the area is always the best way of self preservation.

In my area, carrying a fixed blade really seems like overkill, and I'm not sure if it's even legal. About 10 years ago I found the Gerber Paraframe II. When I'm in a situation that seems sketchy, whether it's humans or dogs, I slip it out palmed in my hand so it's not visible to a potential attacker. It's very quick and easy to open one-handed. I practice both of these movements regularly. About a year ago I also started carrying the tactical pen sold by Jason Hanson. I like that I can take it through airport security, which I've done numerous times, and it's a less lethal option for dealing with humans.

I carry different things at different times of the year. But my three favorite items are my 26 inch collapsible baton. A solid fixed blade like a Cold Steel Recon Tanto, Cold Steel Tac 1 or a Hoffner Hand Spear. And a high intensity FlashLight. Here in Canada Firearms are being banned in a big way. They are planning on confiscation. People still have HandGuns but they are essentially banned. You can't use them or go anywhere with them. You can't buy any or sell them. And there is no such thing as carrying a Firearm here. Well unless you are a criminal. Then you are okay. Also Pepper Spray is not to be carried. You are not supposed to carry other weapons either like knives. In fact you cannot carry any implement for the purpose of self defense. To do so will probably get you arrested. If you carry anything. It has to be kept a secret. But if you have nothing with you. Your chances of survival are slim. We have a crime wave going on. And the cops are telling us to leave our key fobs at the door. So thieves don't have to go looking for it when they come to steal our cars. Because they have real loaded guns and will use them. The cops have become useless in the fight against crime but they don't want you to take the steps to protect yourself or your loved ones. For me Bad Laws are asking to be ignored and broken. When half a dozen people with no knowledge. And are out of touch with reality make Laws that Millions of us are expected to follow without offering any challenge. That does NOT make any sense. Just protect yourself, they are not going to be there to help you. Fortunately for you in the USA. You do not suffer the restrictions we do in Defenseless Canada.

Considering all the scenarios I could when I deliver food at night, walk at night and riding my bike 5 months a year in our excellent Chicago suburban trails, I realized I needed one more tool, for a large, dangerous dog. I don't want to shoot at a dog, I'm not nimble enough to use a knife on a vicious dog and same with pepper spray, it would be hit or miss. But, for $15 I got a Mini Marine Air Horn and was amazed at the enormous blast of sound coming out of this very compact device. IT IS DEAFENING. I cannot imagine it not working on most dogs. It's so loud that I've only tried it out, in the open, and then only in .5 second blasts. I can only imagine how holding the button down for long blasts will deafen me and any attacking dog! Note: I mix and match these tools, depending on the activity.

Spyderco Matriarch is a great blade, but you will also need to carry a utility knife as it has one purpose. Surefire E2D Defender flashlight or equivalent is essential for places you can't have weapons like on airplanes. I was attacked in a nightclub, ended up in a choke hold by a drunk showing off to his friends. I gave him 2 seconds to "win" and let go, but instead he started squeezing harder. That was a no-go so I grabbed the defender carried appendix and jammed the sharp strike bezel into his wrist and twisted, cutting him down to the bone. He let go instantly while screaming that I had a knife. Security grabbed me and pulled me aside shouting where is the knife. I said knife? All I have is a flashlight. They were perplexed and let me go before trowing the attacker and his friends out. I had to go wash the blood off my hands and the flashlight.

My brother I haven't yet to understand how you and me think 100% alike that's what turned me on to your videos when I watched one of your videos and I saw you training with saps and blackjacks which are weapons have been training with for years and training others with and then I started watching the rest of your videos and your mindset and mine are 100% alike. I too carry pepper spray along with other items including a firearm and the blade I prefer is push daggers but I do carry other types of blades as well but my everyday carry includes a firearm or two and a blade and pepper spray and I also carry a SAP on me as well so I always mix it up each day is a little different. I was in the restaurant business for many years I grew up in it and we had drunks coming in there all the time and then we had vagrants that would sleep out in my trash cans and I had to go back there numerous amounts of times and they are not armed with guns but they do carry sharp objects such as screwdrivers, ice picks and also pieces of glass. So I've been in situations where I had to pepper spray some of them when being outnumbered or when I seen them going in to their pockets, I didn't wait for them to pull anything out once I saw them reach into their pockets I just went ahead and pepper sprayed them and they either went to the ground apologizing and then left or they'd turn and run covering their eyes and many times they tripped over themselves because they couldn't see. Bottom line is they never came back and after that I put a fence around my trash cans with a lock on it. And like you said there's those times when you do not want to shoot somebody because they're either a vagrant or a drunk and they are not armed with a gun but they may be armed with a sharp object or with nothing but they want to hurt you physically with their hands and you don't want to shoot them, so the next alternative is either some pepper spray, blackjack / Sap or ASP baton. I also have used tear gas and mace back in the 90s and that is effective as well. I've also used stun guns as well. Being in the bar and restaurant business non-lethal weapons are a must. Thanks for sharing my friend and be safe.

As a 🇨🇦 I wish we could open carry. I will follow the our law as a gun owner. There are other excellent alternatives as you point out. Sadly, even our right to defend ourselves in any way under any circumstances is now being questioned. That is when I will disobey the law. No one has the authority to give or take the right to self/family/friend/neighbour defence form anyone. I was born with a survival/protective instinct. Defying that is defying God.

I honestly don't know how people get through the day without a knife. I use it constantly to open boxes, cut string, open letters, etc. I don't carry a fixed blade, but I live in a state which has no prohibition on carrying an automatic knife. It's just easier to keep in my pocket. Of course I carry a pistol, usually a CZ 75 Compact 9mm. I haven't carried pepper spray, but your logic is sound and perhaps I may start to carry it. Good video.

I agree one hundred percent with you sir. I do carry two knives that can be used for defence, a fixed blade and folder with a lockblade. I dont carry pepper spray, but I think you are right there as well. I am getting long in the tooth, and even though I know I can handle myself in a fight, my age counts against me.

Just a few hints for those states/countries that are a little more "restrictive" in what you can have in your vehicle or on your person. I'd suggest a baseball bat (with glove) to make it look good, Lug nut wrench or large socket wrench are always good choices. Also a 1 inch hex nut with a slip cord will do wonders in hand to hand.

Just a hint if pepper spray is illegal in your area. Get a small metal tin with a hinged lid that closes tightly, a mint container works well. Fill it with finely ground black and cayenne pepper and keep it in your pocket. If needed you pop the lid and either flip it at the person or dump some in your hand and throw it. Works REALLY well and is not as easily seen as a canister of spray. My EDC items are a Cold Steel polypropylene escrima stick converted to a cane with a rubber tip and rubber hand grip, an easy opening tactical folder/fixed bladed karambit or tanto and garlic/cayenne pepper spray or the canned pepper mixture.

I carry lots of weapons, but let's not forget a super bright single mode forward switch flashlight. Your opponent can't fight if he is blinded. A quick flash can give you the time to escape or deliver a devastating blow.

I have been blessed becuase I am right handed but left eye dominant. That means I shoot left handed but fight otherwise right handed. In being armed in an auto it is better form me to carry to shoot right handed but still using my left eye to aim, at point blank range which is often the case in a car aiming is not import. As a former security guard I have TWICE deployed pepper spray of VERY SIGNIFICANT strength that was ignored as some people are immune once by a sister officer and another time by a perp who just danced right past me barely sparing me a glance.

@jonfisher9214Ай бұрын
All of those are illegal to carry here in the UK. In fact it's illegal to carry ANYTHING that you intend to use as a self defence weapon. However it is legal for me to carry a knife with a non locking blade under 3 inches in length. As long as it's not intended to be used for self defence. It's also legal for me to carry a large fixed blade knife if I have a legitimate reason (filleting knife while fishing on the beach for example). As long as it's not intended to be used for self protection. I can also purchase and own an AR15 as long as I have a valid firearms certificate and the gun is stored in a secure location (the police will inspect the storage and interview you before issuing the certificate) But I'm not allowed to use it for self protection. Oh and pepper spray is classed as a firearm. I'm not kidding!

I carry the same EDC. Doing so gives you an expansive toolbox of options for most situations. On the pepper spray, I worked in the Texas prison system for nearly 30 years. Criminals can and do build up tolerance to lower grade pepper sprays, as well as CS and CN. Go with proven brands like FOX Labs, and Saber.

Carry Cash to buy someone off a $100 bill $50 or even $20 is often able to defuse a situation. Much cheaper than a lawyer. Buying goodwill is under rated. Walking away scot free is nice. Plus if you do go to court it looks good that you offered someone money. "I tried everything"

I carry a Colibri lighter, a dual flame with single action ignition. I train with it so that I was able to get it out of my front pants pocket and lit in seconds. It is there in case someone gets me into some type of hold or down to the ground with them. No one is still going to be holding on when that touches them. I can carry it almost anywhere and no one thinks of it as a last-ditch weapon. Oh, and I can light cigars as well.

Fantastic video. I’m getting old. I think I’ve officially entered “FUDD” stage because even though I got a few semi-autos (old Gen 3 Glocks) I find myself preferring wheel guns. Snubby .38s. I’ve also had the same cardinal rule about edged weapons. I never leave without one. In fact if I had to choose in only having either a firearm or a knife, I’d go with the edged weapon. It’ll never run dry of ammo and it’ll never jam. Agreed on pepper spray too. I’ll just leave this here. I used to haul freight into CA every week. I of course couldn’t carry a gun. CA (surprisingly) allows edged weapons (not fixed blades unless you open carry it) and pepper spray. If you truly feel your life is in danger. If you know its you or them, pepper spray in tandem with an edged weapon is a very effective substitution when you can’t have a firearm. I’ll leave it at that.

My daily carry big 3 are knife, light, and gun. I did carry pepper spray for years but a defensive shooting trainer (who happened to be an attorney also) convinced me otherwise. He said a defensive shooting may be met with lawsuits with the reasoning that non-lethal was available to the shooter instead of the gun.

Hi Daniel, thank you for all the great information that you provide. I live in Illinois and carry the same items as you. I also carry a small high intensity flashlight. It is very useful and I use it all the time. Luckily I have been able to avoid or withdraw from hostile situations but it’s very important to always be prepared. I almost had to use pepper spray on a dog but that’s the closest I’ve come to using it.

Hi agree with all your points!!! But what if I'm in a situation where I can't bring one of three you listed? For example, travelling overseas. If running is not an option, what unarmed combat style do you prefer? I heard that striking is better than grappling, but do you have any insight on what practical skill to learn in that scenario?? Thank you! 🥰
@JR41N32 ай бұрын
My recommendation is learn Parkour. No one can hurt you if they can't catch you 😂jokes aside, I'd say learn kickboxing, or just train MMA to learn a mix of striking and grappling. Grappling is extremely effective in a 1 on 1 scenario, especially if your opponent isn't a trained grappler. But if there's more than one opponent, the last place you want to be is on the ground. If you can't run for whatever reason, it's better to know how to stand and fight.

@@JR41N3 Thanks for the reply!! Yeah true running shoes is the most important, but who knows how committed people are! Been to kickboxing classes, but I found the coach to be under-skilled. Currently I'm training on my own, I know it isn't ideal, but better than not training at all hahaha🤣

As a Canadian you have my sympathy. I'm a strong believer in free speech, but the right to self-defense is even more fundamental. If you are dead, you're right to free speech is worthless. A historical illustration makes that clear. Suppose that under the Nazi occupation one Jew in ten had been armed and he was able to kill two German soldiers before being gunned down. That'd mean that for every five Jews taken to death camps, one German would die. Even the Nazis, demented as they were, would not have sacrificed 1.2 million soldiers to kill 6 million Jews. That is what the right to self-defense means.

It boggles my mind that it would be unlawful for one to protect yourself or protect your family in a life threatening situation; the defense of one’s life is and should be a God given right. I always conceal carry my S&W .40 just in case. I practice with it regularly and always keep in mind gun safety practices. I've never had to use it outside the firing range, hopefully it will stay that way, but just having it is a great deterrent. I also keep a pocket knife on me for the exact reason you mentioned. I train BJJ and boxing as well, because the firearm and blade are only for extreme situations where I can't run (like if I'm protecting a loved one) or fight bare handed (if someone has a blade or a firearm of their own). Also for mountain lions... I've encountered a couple of those in the wild where I live, and I always carry when I hike or camp now. Being stalked by a cougar with nothing but a knife to defend yourself with is a bit of an eye-opening experience. 😅

Do you have any videos for addressing dog attacks when out for a walk? Someone in my neighborhood now has a vicious pit bull type dog and while it is on a leash they barely have control of it. The dog will lunge and growl at me despite the fact I’m across the street and it is no where near its home turf.
