Let's take another look at the barefoot shoe and see if they really do live up to the hype, this time round there is facts, evidence and a well backed up argument in my opinion considering both the pro's and the con's. Let me know what you guys think and let's debate down below in the comments !

I agree with the transition period, you explained it very well! This counts for anything, like sitting on the floor, weight lifting, where your body has to adapt, etc. Just easy and slow. But the reason barefoot shoes were invented in the first place were exactly those things like cushioned shoes give you a pre-set foot position with a raised heel, the narrow toe box, the weight of the shoe, and this all in combination, leaving you NO CHOICE - it's the combination of all combined adaptations the barefoot shoes have that provide the benefits. The regular shoe industry never really cared about my feet. As an interval trail and off -road runner, wearing special regular cushioned trail shoes (about the same price as barefoot shoes), it happened that when I no longer had my shoes on, I had the feeling that I was still wearing shoes. That moment I decided I HAD to change to barefoot shoes and did not regret this, because what would happen if I go back to cushioned shoes, with my toes twisted again and again?

Love this video. Paints a clear and nuanced picture and addresses both sides making it useful to those questioning whether bare foot shoes are right for them

I will argue a bit on this opinion, as I believe that the barefoot community is way more healthy. When I had issues previously with pain on my feet while hiking all of what I was getting is that I needed more cushion and a stronger sole. If my running form was not good, I just needed to use more my calfs. If I couldn't grip some smaller stones with my foot while bouldering, I just needed a different shoe. On the barefoot community I have seen quite a lot of advices to do a smooth transition with a lot of exercises for the feet, keep running in cushion shoes until you fully adapt, try to be fully barefoot rather than with barefoot shoes... The brands of barefoot shoes are also quite careful with not making claims of fixing foot issues, while adidas and nike are constantly making these claims, so you buy the latest running shoe. IMO, barefoot should be the standard. Everyone should be able to run and walk barefoot properly before running in cushion shoes. Of course, the transition is very slow, but if your objective is being healthy anyways, why should you care about having slower times?

I really don't think the main battleground here should be Barefoot Vs Cushioned, I also think looking at top athletes is a red herring as they are often doing damage to their bodies in exchange for top performance. Anatomical Vs Non-Anatomical shoes is the issue we should really be looking at - it is crazy that many shoe manufacturers expect to basically turn people's feet into hooves shod with narrow, stiff shoes. For some activities a thin sole is nice and other times I like padding, but I never wish my toes were all squished together. It would be great if some bigger brands (or even traditional shoe makers) actually started offering foot-shaped shoes in casual/formal footwear in addition to sporting shoes.

Thanks for this video! This topic is such a weird one - while trying to learn about it I've only come across hyper-positive evangelists or ranting haters, both of which I am inclined to distrust. I guess it's just one of those things people get emotionally invested in and therefore get less rational about? Bizarre. I haven't seen your previous videos on the topic but this one felt pretty reasonable and balanced to me although I am not an expert. My personal rant about "barefoot shoes" is... you're still expected to buy shoes. The community does it almost as much as the advertising, just assuming that to go "barefoot" you'll benefit from buying all this expensive footwear. It's not universal among everyone I've seen talking about it but it happens so frequently it kind of disgusts me. I thought this was the "ancient, natural" option, why tell me to buy product.

You don't have to trust anyone to go by the actual evidence - not someone's opinion after they said they were going to share evidence. If you want an expert who can point you toward evidence, I'd say listen to Dr. Ray McClanahan. He'll make statements about evidence so you don't have to trust his opinion. The shoes are like anything else of premium quality - higher cost to start, far lower cost to own. Mileage on barefoot shoes is much higher than on highly cushioned shoes. Why buy barefoot shoes? I dunno, don't buy shoes if you're never going to wear them I guess. I've never heard of someone who wears shoes regularly that decided to never wear shoes again.

I always thought I just had wide feet, so avoided the shitty toe squishing shoes. Let the market decide

So you claim to do a deep dive with all the evidence, yet you only include a single screenshot of a study related to 'barefoot' shoes and no link to the research or even the title. That screenshot tells us nothing. Then you add some additional studies about foot striking, which doesn't directly have anything to do with wearing 'barefoot' shoes, and really, the studies just highlight that heel striking isn't as bad as it's made out to be. This video is purely your opinion with unsubstantiated claims, not 'facts' and 'evidence.' I don't necessarily disagree with anything in here, but this is not a deep dive into the pros and cons backed by facts and evidence.

I will attach all links in the comment section all the counter points came from studies I just didn’t want to overload the video with screen shot after screen shot

Every counter point whether the heel striking, over use injuries, using other methods, transition period etc etc was all from I think 7-8 different studies, I’ll attach them in the comments now if I can still do it 👍
