Thanks so much for featuring my tiny palette Helen! I love the idea of making a colour swatch and covering it with sticky back plastic to keep in the tin. My paper swatch got covered in paint 😂 I love the full kit you’ve got there with the tiny sketchpad and water brush. Happy travelling (light!) with your mini kit ❤ x

That’s an adorable little palette!! I’d probably use it for extra colours to go with another palette because I need mixing space and something for water anyway (not much of a travel brush person).

Yes, that's how I use my equivalent of the Art Toolkit palette - it's my additional granulating paints.

The joys of messing about with colour mixing 😁. Who would have thought that Noturno had a dupe so easily made from most people's current "stash"? At the beginning I was chanting (internally of course) "wonky colour pie-charts, wonky colour pie-charts", then you did all of that mixing and about covered it all. Having said that though, you've given me a couple of ideas for my next few wonky pie charts 👍🏻. I've been doing one a day for 5 days now and I'm well chuffed with what I've learned and the colours I've been able to "discover". So, all round winner. Cheers Helen 😊

I should have done pie charts!! I'm really glad you're enjoying them! Just a note - the mix I did dried in a different way - it colour separated a bit, in a different way from Notturno, so not a total dupe.

What a cute little tin. Teamed up with a tiny sketchbook and a water brush and it's as compact and minimal as you could get I reckon. Even if you wanted to add a couple of Neocolors to that you could still find a cute little bag or make up pouch to fit it all in. It's giving me Christmas present ideas 😄

I just LOVE your channel. Your voice is so soothing, your work is amazing, and your info is always spot on. Have you ever tried Bloodstone genuine by DS? I think you would love it for landscapes. It’s a blackish brown with red undertones. It would be great for rocks. Also, for mixing, instead of toothpicks, use a straightened paper clip. It’s reusable.
@helencryer4 ай бұрын
That's so so nice of you, thank you!! I haven't tried Bloodstone, no. I'm wondering how similar it is to Hematite Violet Genuine? (Which I have but haven't used for a while.) A paperclip would have been so much more sensible, thank you!!

I've got to get a tube of the quin burnt scarlet to try! Have you ever played with a magnet with the hematite gen? It's pretty fun! That is a cute little palette and it seems to be comfortable to use with decent sized brushes. I couldn't go that small myself, but it would be handy for people who mix on paper. My smallest palette that I use is a Schmincke square. They package it with 9 full pans or sometimes with 18 half pans. I can squeeze 32 half pans in after taking out the insert and it still sits in my palm and lots of mixing space. Guess I have trouble with the whole limited palette concept 😂 (but in fairness, I just use the one set whether it's desert, ocean or forest so I'm sticking with that rationale for having so many colors).
@helencryer4 ай бұрын
It's probably not something I will need to use often, most the time I will likely have a bag, or be going by car and can take more things with me, and my favourite palette is just the standard 14 half pan set (which I fit 20 in, using the middle row), like you say - for everything. I love having Quin Burnt Scarlet in a palette - it seems to come in handy a fair bit. Just a note - it separated out in a different way than Notturno, so looked more different from it when fully dry.

Hi Helen … I use Daniel Smith as my main paint and switched from yellow ochre to transparent yellow oxide. It’s a PY42 and neither as heavy nor as opaque as the ochre… far more pleasant to me.
@helencryer4 ай бұрын
I have been eyeing that up actually! I also have Roman Szmal's Transparent Gild Ochre and really like that one.

Oh so you have one of those small samples pds from Stonehenge. I have the Aqua Hotpress and the White, which is for pencil sketcing. They're great for doing ASEOs, albeit you have to trim a shaving off to be right. 😆

Micro palettes are cute, and this tiny version seems well designed and fun. But for me, a small tin or plastic pallet (ca 4.5 x 2.5") that fits in my jeans pocket yet holds 8-12 half pans and has mixing space is portable enough. Yellow ochre will always be in my kit. Helen, have you used it for mixing greens?? I bet it mixes well with that pretty Payne's Grey by MaimeriBlu.
@helencryer4 ай бұрын
Sounds good too! Yes - I did mix some greens with the ochre, and was rather disappointed - with the Payne's grey it made a very dull neutral. It had me missing my Quin Deep Gold or Mijello Yellow Ochre. I need to spend some time just with that Yellow Ochre, to get to find out its strengths. Which Yellow Ochre do you use?
@CastleMc4 ай бұрын
@@helencryer Hi Helen, I like almost any Y/O but usually use DS, W/N or Szmal. A lot of traditional English landscape artists use Y/O mixes (Prussian Blue or Paynes) for the darker values of tree foliage. Some add a drop of pink to the Paynes and Y/O mix. An old truism is that tree foliage should mimic the color variation of martini olives so those are duskier greens. Cheers!

@@helencryerRosa Gallery makes a very nice Yellow Ochre. It’s more transparent and IMHO makes attractive mixes. I didn’t like yellow ochre generally before I had the Rosa Gallery version.

Another enjoyable video, except for one thing: My local art supply shop had watercolor on sale for "watercolor month" in July. I have been wanting to try verditer, so I bought Holbein verditer because you said you always have it in your palette for skies. When you said in this video that you will likely replace it with Daniel Smith's verditer, which you like better, I let out a bit of a sigh/gasp 😂 I'm sure it will be fine! 😂
@helencryer4 ай бұрын
Yes, I almost always use Verditer for skies. I had a tube of Daniel Smith which I used up, then a tube of Holbein's. I marginally prefer the Daniel Smith, but they're both good, and I'm sure you'll love it!
