Nice! Hey Sharla, I had an idea to level out the dip in the flooring when it goes into the water drain/canal. Did you throw away the surplus planks that you trimmed off the pieces? Maybe you can use those to put underneath the last bit of the flooring, right in the water drain. I think it's just about deep enough for what I can see in the video. If not, maybe you can separate the plastic from the wood and put either one of those (whichever fits better under the tilted flooring). Hope that can help! It would make the balcony feel a bit bigger AND help with leveling out the chairs of other furniture that you might place there!

One caution about the pebbles is that exposed to the weather they (and the wooden slats) will get pretty grimy. It will require some labour to keep that up. Given that it's not highly visible, I'd go with trimming the wood as it's easier to hose down in your bathroom and prop against the wall to dry. I had pebbles as a dry river in an enclosed balcony area with a granite lantern and Buddha. Even dry they had to be cleaned at least once a year to deal with the dust and cobwebs. Wet would have been awful as mould and algae grow rapidly.
@RSkies4 жыл бұрын
Looks good Sharla! If you measure that empty space that the decking didn't cover, you could always put some small low to the ground plant pots or something there to fill that space. Now you just need some cute LED lights (string them going down the post!) and it's all set!

Hello Sharla! Your balcony is a big success!! You did a very good job! I recommend you to protect the cushions from sun light,rain and humidity- i know it is impossible in Japan, but ..- Also, when it rains, you can cover your wooden chairs and table with a nylon cover, you can make raincoats for them. There are also metal parts of them, it is good to protect them from rust. This is my idea, but also the drain line, you may leave open for any floating from above, the pipes are connected from the other floors. Just in case :)

I recently set up a Kallax system to display my favourite books/figures/photos etc. I also completely reorganised everything in my house and would love to see you do something similar! PS: you could try taking another plank or two off where you cut to fit the pipe, slide the whole thing a bit more to the left so it reaches the wall (left when facing from inside to outside) and possibly squeeze in another 3 squares on the right side by your neighbour. But it looks great!

You've just proven that a little effort went a long way toward making a VERY small space multifunctional and visually appealing. Beautifully done. What are the rules regarding the use of small tabletop Hibachi grills on the patios? There was a video on the Life Where I'm From's channel where he was invited to a family's house for a meal with charcoal grilled food. He mentioned that there were smell ordinances in his community, so outdoor grilling was not easy to do. I could see you and a friend or a visiting family member sitting on the patio happily chatting while grilling your food of choice. The recipes for grilled vegetables and fruit kababs are many. I loved my Hibachi when I lived in Atlanta.

Looks very nice the balcony! Also love the central piece in your living room: Elon Mush smoking a joint. For the balcony: You could consider re-using the left-over wooden pieces from cutting the tiles to size as filler in the gutter. You may get rid of the slope the tiles give that way. Unsure if it will be stable though but it may be worth a shot. Also, maybe you could hang some plant from the drain pipe! May look cute :)

Aww that looks way more cosy. Maybe you could use the vertical space to get more plants in there? You can get those planters you stick on your wall, or maybe a tall thin thing like a lamp in the corner, and have some trailing plants that can flow down. Wonder if they make fake ivy for the wall... 🤔 If you're doing more DIY get a box cutter or something! Those scissors were one day away from retirement

You could always buy a snake plant! I love mine - it only needs to be watered once a month and it's fantastic for improving air quality. You could keep it outside too, so you wouldn't have to worry about your cats eating it. For me, I just can't with fake plants - they feel so depressing. Like one more artificial thing in the home... genuine wood, stone, and other natural materials just make a place feel so much more welcoming I think. Love your new balcony though! I'm going to do the same - I already ordered my runnen tiles too!

I used the exact same tiles in my backyard, which is about 7 times the size of yours. After a few years of weathering, Australian summers and wet winters, they were not in very good condition, and some were actually crumbling due to rot. I pulled them up and threw them all out. There was also a large build up of insects and dirt underneath. Yours may last longer if the area is covered and not as exposed to the elements. You can also buy from IKEA a resealer which I tried, but it was a darker colour than the original.

IKEA should have a service called "Call a Swede" and someone from the store comes over and helps put stuff together.

This reminds me of that Swedish tourism board campaign - it was called The Swedish Number and if you called it, you would be connected to a random Swedish volunteer, to talk about anything. It apparently ran for a whole year, around 2016 :)

Happy birthday, Sharla! May friends and family (virtually) fill your day with love. May you have many more birthdays. And may you stay forever young.

Sharla has mentioned it's a Scottish fold (it's also only a few months old and Sharla filmed it when it was still in the shop! Do have a look :) )
