Thank you for providing great information! I have two Super Sweet 100 tomato plants growing in 20 gallon fabric grow bags on my deck. I decided to let most of the suckers develop. In 2-1/2 months the plant is nearly 8 feet tall and quite dense with branches and leaves. I keep the plants tied up with two 4 foot tomato cages. The top cage's widest point sits on top of the one in the grow bag. I secured them to each other with fastener ties for wiring, then secured the entire cage structure to a 10 foot pvc pipe, 1 inch in diameter. The pvc pipe is secured to my deck railing with 3 inch screws. Yes the foliage is thick, but there is adequate air flow and I keep leaf disease minimal to non-existent by spraying all the leaves on the plants with a solution of 12 tablespoons, 3% hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon of water. I do that about every 10 days starting when multiple flower clusters are developing, which is when the plants are about 2 feet high.

For cherry tomatoes if you allow the suckers to grow you will encourage more nodes of fruit and reap a larger harvest. Just remove the first couple sets of suckers for airflow. For other larger varieties then yeah, remove the suckers.

@jgehbinv
@jgehbinv Жыл бұрын
@@kevinpatino6318 - when you plant a cherry tomato plant, remove only the first developing flower cluster and the first 1-2 suckers to allow the plant to get off to a good start. After that allow all subsequent suckers and flower clusters. I did this with the Super Sweet 100 Cherry tomato plant and have had very good results. Just be prepared to have something to keep the plant adequately tied up! My plants are 8 feet tall end of June and I still have a good 2.5 to 3 months of growing ahead of me!

Thought I'd answer bcuz no one else did. Container growing can be awesome but you need enough space to have a large storage tote. 18 gal or larger if you want lots of tomatoes. If you don't have a deck, or large space you will want to get a small bush variety for indoors. Not always easy to find in big city. Watering daily if inside or once/ twice daily depending on heat if outside. Fertilize every 10 to 14 days for max fruit yield. I did monthly for my first few years and it will still be fine but you can get. Smaller and fewer fruit and plant won't be as large. Check other vids for types of fertilizer and Epsom salts ,lime applications since I'm already wordy here. 😁 If you bought a variety that can grow large ,lookout because they can be over 8' tall. Otherwise lots of sun is what they love but if you are in desert shady is best. Watch lots of videos if you want gigantic plants and plentiful yields. I grow 4 massive plants on my deck ( townhouse). Sungold and Black Cherry this year plus 2 Pink Boar medium-sized beautiful striped red and green toms. Growing is fun and addictive. After 4 years,I finally got things right. Small container is the worst mistake I made in the beginning.

Hi Lucas! I’m new to your channel and appreciate your knowledge and techniques! I was wondering, do you prune the suckers out of determinate cherry tomatoes, too? I’ve heard that determinate are not pruned. I’d love to know your thoughts! Love your trellis design! Thank you!
@lucasgrowsbestyt
@lucasgrowsbestyt 3 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the channel! No, I wouldn't recommend pruning suckers off of determinates. These plants produce a set number of flowers so doing this would be reducing potential fruit. Personally I haven't grown a ton of determinates (I am this year) but this is the general consensus. Try pruning one and don't prune the others to see what happens!

Greetings from Ontario! I personally have had more success growing in-ground, but containers can work. Five gallon should be enough, but larger would probably work better. For cherries, instead of using a cage, I recommend using a string suspended from an above support. Tie it to the bottom of the plant, and wrap it around as it grows. Check out this video for how to plant in containers: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pJW5gnurmtp3brc

Hi Amy, you're right, I didn't talk about how I was staking. I used 6' bamboo stakes and stuck smaller diameter 4' bamboo into the tops of them. Check out 7:15 of this video I made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnzVlISsh7GKfc0 I explain what I'm talking about. I also used home made cages which I discuss in the video I linked as well. I found that the 10' bamboo stakes eventually start leaning with the weight of the cherry tomato plants so I'm still trying to figure out a better method. I have some ideas which I will try this season so stick around! (Pun intended)

I’m a bit confused on the pruning aspect. Many others say not to remove suckers and only prune plants that are totally overgrown. I’m going to be trying a hard pruning, single stem approach on my regular tomatoes this year. How should this differ for cherry tomatoes? I like the openness of your plants. I am trying Black Cherry tomatoes this year. I look forward to your input. Nice job. Thanks!
@lucasgrowsbestyt
@lucasgrowsbestyt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, as far as I'm concerned, pruning is really a matter of personal preference. If you like the open look, you will love single stemming. This is also a great method because it maintains good airflow in the garden and reduces shading. Beefsteaks and cherries can be pruned the same way successfully. In commercial greenhouses, all plants are indeterminate and single stemmed, whereas in field tomato production determinate (bush) tomato plants are grown unpruned. Hope this helps!
@jgehbinv
@jgehbinv Жыл бұрын
Suggestion - prune one of the plants and let the other go, such that you have quite a few suckers. I have a lot of suckers and still maintain adequate air flow. My super sweet 100 plants are 8 feet tall after 2-1/2 months in 20 gallon fabric grow bags on my deck, They are loaded with tomatoes.

Frost warnings lasted well into May, so I started my tomatoes indoors this year from seed, then moved them to the pots out back when the weather warmed up. I think I mistakenly put multiple seeds in the soil bcuz now I have two distinct plants coming up in each pot, less than an inch apart. To relieve crowding I'm thinking of sacrificing one plant so that the other won't be crowded. Opinion?
@lucasgrowsbestyt

Yes, either cut the weaker one at the soil line or transplant them into separate spaces. They will crowd each other and compete for resources.

From what I've heard, hybrid tomatoes won't grow true to the parent fruit. I recommend trying to string trellis your plant. Just tie some twine near the bottom of the stem and attach it to some point above it. Spiral your plant around it as it grows throughout the season and prune the suckers.

Typically I would top them around 6-8'. It's not really necessary, but in cooler climates it may help ripen up any remaining tomatoes. You could let a sucker grow to replace the leader but there's really no point of doing this unless the leader is growing strangely.

About every 10 days, I have used with great success 12 tablespoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1 gallon of water in a pump sprayer and applied to all leaves on the plants starting when they are about 2 feet tall. This solution changes the ph on the leaves such that disease spores have a very difficult time developing.

Hi Coral! Blight is inevitable later in the season, but if it's happening prematurely there is an issue with your growing environment. Spacing is a big issue, since disease typically thrives in moist environments, and lack of airflow among plants would create that. For single stemmed indeterminates I wouldn't put them any closer than 18" apart. Also, drip irrigate to avoid getting water on the leaves and supply consistent moisture. Make sure your growing environment is as clean as possible. Check out some of my other tomato vids, you may find them helpful!

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to take suckers off of cherry tomatoes. That's where your fruit is

Fruit also grows along the main stem. It really is personal preference when it comes to pruning. With pruned plants you can fit more plants in an area, although each individual plant will produce less fruit than a multi-stemmed or unpruned plant.

That's true Daniel, but you should also consider that they will take up more space in the garden.

You are not supposed to take the suckers out of cherry tomato because this part produces the most fruit.

Not necessarily. More suckers means more flowers, hence more fruit overall. However, it also means a bigger plant that takes up more space. By single stemming, you reduce the square footage each plant uses, allowing you to fit more vines in a given area. It really is six of one, half dozen of the other. However, I enjoy the single and double stem method as it increases airflow and reduces the chance for disease in the garden.
