I wouldn't blow pipe smoke directly on the books, myself. I'm a pipe smoker too, and I like to smoke while I read, but I like the books to retain their original smell for as long as possible - but that's just me. I also worry that the smoke will stain the books over time, so I always direct the smoke away from them when I read.

Nice video, David - oh, and I LIKE your tie, suit and pipe combo! And yes - the illustration on the front of 'Beowulf' is, indeed, Tolkien's own drawing of Smaug

It actually isn't! The illustration dates from September 1927 and had a line from Beowulf at the bottom. Neither "Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien" or "J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist & Illustrator" say anything about Smaug. I believe people think of it as Smaug because it was used for the cover of the first deluxe edition of The Hobbit in 1976.
@Yaris510Ай бұрын
@@sackixfilms8950 Interesting! I stand corrected. As you say, the confusion probably arose because it was used for the cover of the first deluxe edition of 'The Hobbit'

I have always preferred the single edition version of the lord of the rings.

I tend to agree. Since it’s a single work it strikes me as more appropriate.

Finest pipe weed in the Southfarthing! Love your aesthetic man haha. That folio edition looks amazing. I saw it's sold out but wow does it look cool. You've got a great appreciation for books in general. What's the significance of starting on Sept 19th? I'd definitely read these books again. Saw the movies last month
@MrDavidBarr2 ай бұрын
Thank you, you’re very kind! It’s really an excellent copy. Did I say September 19? I meant September 22 which is the date of the Long Expected Party which occurs in the first chapter of the Lord of the Rings. I’ve started my annual pilgrimage through the books on that date for the last several years.
@Andrew-ko2ps2 ай бұрын
@@MrDavidBarrmy brain probably picked another date lol. And that sounds pretty fun, following in the Christopher Lee method yearly! I've got a really nice all in one edition from when I was a kid that I've never actually read, only the paperbacks. I think I'll read the good one starting the 22nd along with you and others.

Great collection! This year I've dived into other stories by Tolkien like Leaf By Niggle, Smith of Wootton Major, etc. and if you haven't tried them yet they are really good. Also, out of curiosity may I ask what tobacco you're smoking?

Doesn't the pipe smoke make all those books smell like shit?
@MrDavidBarr22 күн бұрын
Not at all. There is a huge difference between pipe tobacco smoke and cigar or cigarette smoke. Within about 6 hours any smell or trace has dissipated.
@DanSmith-j8y22 күн бұрын
@@MrDavidBarr That's good. I don't smoke cigarettes, cigars, or a pipe, but I've noticed when I've been at the home of a cigarette smoker my clothes reek after.
