Which is weird as the original book was on glossy paper. Looks like DC seemingly just aped the format of the Year One Absolute with the original colouring version on retro looking paper when it was originally a premium release resulting in an unauthentic original colouring. Good absolutebthough and a stone cold classic story

It's amazing how many of these books are now out of print, or available only in either the cheapest paperbacks or Absolutes. The deluxe hardcovers and omnibus editions are mostly defunct. Gothic is op completely. Frank Miller has never had an omnibus as far as I can tell (!!!!), and his deluxe hcs are all op. Even Dark Knight Returns can't be found in a regular hc -- one of the all-time classics. The Tomasi omnibus is gone. Knightfall omnibuses are gone. Arkham Asylum deluxe hc is gone. Etc., etc. Very frustrating. In any case, as a fan of Batman who stopped reading the comics 40 years ago, I'm grateful for this list, which will help me get back into reading Batman, in whatever format I can find.

If you haven't read it, I highly recommend "Blind Justice" by Sam Hamm, for the 600th issue of Detective Comics in 1989. Hamm is a screenwriter (see Tim Burton's Batman). For his comic arc, Hamm did NOT go for the predictable Joker story, or an "all the rogues gallery getting together to take Batman out" plot. Instead he creates a conspiracy within Wayne Technologies, compelling Bruce Wayne and Batman to make choices, and accept consequences, that must be lived with. Hamm's story is also based on science (even if it is science fiction, but no magic, supernatural, etc), and morality, which make the best stories imo. It also explores some of the true costs of being Batman, how Bruce Wayne reinforces his obsessive focus and motivation almost daily, and the price he pays for it.

I used lesser known Batman graphic novels to connect all the most reputable ones and created a continuity between them all. Some of those lesser knowns include Prey. Highly underrated story that sees the introduction of Hugo Strange, a story set in the early years of Batman and the first time he’s mentally broken along with his identity figured out. This also shows him building the first Batmobile, as he uses the hang glider from year one throughout Prey until the very end when the Batmobile is built. There’s also Death in the family in this continuity of mine, which sees Jason Todd and Batman tracking down his mother, one of the possible ones being Lady Shiva, who would go on to heal Batman’s back in Knightquest which is another graphic novel within my continuity. Other stories in there not mentioned in this video that I highly recommend are The Cult, Batgirl/Robin Year one and Nightwing year one both by Chuck Dixon, Knightfall (origin and introduction of Bane) and its sequels Knightquest and Knightsend.

Been collecting for a long time now and my top ones, (i might miss out some) but #3 court of owls #2 Batman Venom #1 Will always be The Dark Knight returns. Batman Venom is quite a rare one to try and get your hands on I actually own both paperbacks with the remastered issue 2 cover and the 1993 dc paperback with the horrifying purple pinky background colour. Its great at making Batman crumble as a character and how he regains his Batman identity back by going through alot of stuff with the venom drug. I also luv to pick out how Batman first took the drug and how it was introduced first to Batman and then Bane later using it to make his Bane appearance stand out and gain his strength. The court of owls is my favourite modern comic ever which is part of the new 52 of course and its such a great compelling story and its quite a short one to and it shows how much great quality Scott puts in his writing and how epic Gregs artwork is. The Dark Knight returns, ITS THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS CMON MAN!!!

great stuff on Morrison. Not many lists like this focus on the different runs of the amazing writers who have taken over the series. I am currently reading Post Crisis Batman in order so I've read a lot of the early Morrison stuff but I have not gotten to his run yet. I am currently at Starlin's run on Batman and Grant BreyFogle on Detective which are both bare bones gritty realistic takes on the mythos and some of the best Batman writing I've read. Snyder's legendary run is what got me back into the comics so I am super stoked about reading his earlier takes on Batman that I haven't read yet, like Black Mirror and such. Anyways, great list and insight from a fellow BAtFan

One of the things I love about The Killing Joke is that it was meant to be an alternative universe type story and not part of the main Batman canon but both readers and DC themselves loved the story so much they made it canon and it's been a part of Batman's core history ever since and it's a great story for a newcomer because most people are aware of Batman and the Joker by now so you don't necessarily need to read anything before it to enjoy it.

I prefer to read the Omniverse/trade paperbacks bound form collections, because collecting one by one is too expensive and then you have to worry about preserving your condition

Can you please do the same thing for red hood

I actually actively dislike Red Hood so I would not be able to.

@@omnibuscollector damn. I like how in depth you went and can’t find anyone who has done the same with red hood. Could you do nightwing? Getting into comics more heavily and I want to start with those 3 but it’s so overwhelming

@@matthews5202 I don’t actually do comic content here anymore but have talked Nightwing on TikTok

I’m a big fan of the Darkseid v Superman/JLA . So I just purchased fourth world 1-2, infinite crisis, Morrison 1-3, final crisis. Hopefully I’m covered to understand the story being told 🤞
