I started by reading Wolverine (character I liked from films), then I learned about his villains, hero team ups, his fight with Hulk, then I read Hulk, then I read Avengers, it just branched out naturally as a lot of these things are intertwined and overlap. You'll discover new characters just from reading about other ones.

I did that for DC started with batman, learned about the robins, learned about his allies, and his villains. Then I also looked into online reviews of certain series that I was personally interested in and I branched out.

I grew up on comics like Batman, Flash, Spiderman, and X-Men, and I recently started to get interested in comics again after a long lapse. I felt very overwhelmed and just kinda grabbed a handful of random books featuring the characters I like, but this approach makes so much more sense. Focus on the work of the artists and the writers who are making the story enjoyable and follow their work and runs. I’m going to give this a try and see where it goes! I’ve always love Batman, and I went through a phase where I was non stop watching Batman videos such as, cartoon clips, game clips, people talking about the cartoons and games, etc. And a lot of these videos always mentioned a Batman comic but I never bothered to actually buy those comics. Now I think that phase is back and I found the perfect store that only sells comics.

Honestly, that is a really bad way to get into legacy characters that are decades old. The first stories they appear in are typically not some of their best and you may get a bad first impression. I would never recommend starting with golden or silver age comics. 1940s to 60s comics are extremely dated and do not have very good artwork. I can barely tolerate anything written by Stan Lee for example, I just can't do it. It's better to jump into comics from the 70s or 80s onwards after the comic code censorship ended. Books like Watchmen forced the industry to mature and built the foundation for graphic novels.

I love moon knight, I’d recommend probably reading him digitally if you like digitally just because a lot of his stuff is out of print and will be a little hard to find physically for a reasonable price. There are things you can find, and you can also just wait for the stuff you want to read to be back in print like I am

I enjoy reading chunks of runs, going back and forth between and within series, and then filling in the blanks through my memory and through reading those blanks if I haven't. A good story is a good story, you don't need a 60 year background for the character. I also always read 3 to 6 things at the same time, alternating by mood or room (no kidding there, I have my heavier books lying in different rooms until read.

My journey with DC was interesting. I started with Haunted Knight at a local shop and then bought along Halloween and Dark Victory. I loved Sale’s art and that led me to Superman for All Seasons. Then I found Sandman and couldn’t get enough. V for Vendetta was also amazing. For Marvel I bought a Civil War hardcover, the Marvel Knights color ómnibus and the Infinity Gauntlet omnibus.

I’m new to comics, but I watch a lot of series and films, which is where I draw my inspiration for the comics. I simply choose the most interesting characters, including those I’ve discovered through research, and look at their omnibuses so that I can experience the creation of the characters and stories from the very beginning. In this regard, I’m a purist.

She likes concise origin stories, and single timelines. Great video, lots of good take aways here. I’ve been looking into getting into the Fantastic Four, so I might check out the run you mentioned. Something I found helpful when getting into western comics was simply going to comic shops and book stores instead of looking at everything online. Looking around and having something jump out at you is a great feeling. That’s how I found Middle West by Skottie Young and Jorge Corona, which is a great book.

thank you for making this video. every other video I've found on the subject essentially boiled down to top ten comic lists rather than explaining from the ground up not only the concepts of runs, but also suggestions on how to continue to read and explore comics /on your own/, which is what I always struggled with All these comics felt so huge and scary to read before, but your kind way of speaking and gentle encouragement has finally gotten me to try reading the Tom King's run of Mister Miracle. I've heard before that I should read a lot of other comics to fully appreciate it and such, but I've done more research and found just as many saying it's fine to jump in blind. Thank you!

Since we’re back in the X-Men tv series or I started reading the X-Men from top to bottom, I’m on issue 16 so far! As a kid, I never read the comics I knew of the characters but never read the comics never thought to. I just looked at the TV and was all struck by Spider-Man Batman wonder woman the Incredible Hulk and I finally got introduced to the X-Men and the 90s and I was 20 something

After following the advice I settled on the first 3 volumes of the new 52 Scott Snyder 2011-2016 run. I feel like I will try to read and collect all the volumes from those years. Just like you mention, if you started from manga, its much easier to go straight to Image Comics or Boom Studios. That's what I did. Self contained, just buy the collected edition paperback or in beautiful ( but usually OoP) hardcovers. East of West is such a great choice too. Love the story and the art is beautiful.

This video has eased some of my anxieties. I personally care about the stories and the writing (and the art, of course) more than I do the specific characters; and I don't now feel I have to think about what single issues I want to jump into-as I don't care for them: I'm just going to collect collected editions, ones I know are well written and well designed and are to my taste; and I can also simply prioritise books by the creative teams themselves, as that is what I value. My concern was that I HAD to just read, say, Spiderman simply because he interests me. No: I can read just the great stories about him-because that is what interests me. And the same for a writer, such as Alan Moore: I like his writing style, so I'll follow him and read more of his stuff, regardless of the characters/heroes. I don't know why, but this wasn't so obvious to me. Thanks for the video and clearing all this up :)

One thing I didn't like at all when I started reading american comics is the constant change of artists in the series (DC and Marvel mostly). Also there's no longer any good source (since comicbookdb went offline) to keep track of your favorite artist. What's he/she working on right now, what's upcoming, what did they do recently since I last looked them up etc. Or tracking down a new favorite's previous work. Those sources that are out there list one million issues, but 99,9 % of their "work" is one of the ten billion variants on a book only.

I think the constantly changing artists is a mixed bag similar to the constantly changing writers, if there’s one you don’t like they won’t be on it forever, but if there’s one you do like, then sadly they will also not be on it forever. I appreciate it when there’s a decently long run with one artist and writer, like Snyder and capullo’s Batman, or the main series of hellboy (it does switch artists, but most of it is Mike mignola or at least the artist working with him tries to emulate his style)

I have problems paying attention , I never finish watching a movie, I've heard that reading comic books and book in general are a good way to mantain my mind focus on those stories, I guess it is going to be difficult but I'll try , good video!

Great advice and points on how and where to start reading comics. when i started i read Essex County by jeff lemire, the reason i read that book was because Essex county was going to be made into a tv series and i wanted to read the source material before watching the show and I really enjoyed the book so much i decided to find more comics and graphic novels by jeff lemire and he basically became my favourite writer and artist, now i look for comic books that are by jeff lemire whether hes the writer, artist or both, what i love about jeff lemire comics and graphic novels where he only does the writing is that i get see a new comic artist and admire the artwork and jeff has partnered with many great comic book artists like Dustin Nguyen,Andrea Sorrention, Emi Lenox and many other and gives me more appreciation and admiration for comic book art by different artists and seek out more of their works which gives me more comics and graphic novels to read

When I was in my early teens I had a ton of hand me down comics (mostly Justice League, The Flash, and Superman) from the 50's early 60s to 70s. When I went to college, my mother threw them out. I get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I think about how much they would be worth today

I'd had a struggle with trying to figure out how to read comics for a while, and I just read the first arc(?) of the young avengers(which i had originally chosen to start with because 1, the characters that seemed interesting, and 2, it was fairly recent, so there's less content to wade through)over the last few days and really loved it,, then came across this video,, and it's so helpful, I used to read a bunch of chapter books and Manga, which have obvious jumping off points, but struggled with comics, not knowing where to start,, so seeing this video and how you don't actually need to find an objectively correct place to start is really helpful,,, I'm gonna keep reading more of the young avengers comics, because I'm really enjoying them, but I'll definitely be jotting down which artists and writers I'm enjoying to look into afterwards, I hadn't even thought of finding comics like that,,, thanks for making this video!

Right now, the best way for me to read comic books are reading full volumes of a Comic book. For example, I have four comic volumes of World War Hulk, Secret Invasion, War of Kings, Secret Wars 2015, and Comic Volumes of Ultimate Spider-man.

the thing about comparing manga to hero comics is that fact that characters like batman and supper man started in the late 1930s a long time ago, and most manga doesnt even last more then 10 years, and all the og artists that came up with the ideas are now dead, and most manga authors are still alive and making new stories
