Great to hear someone talking sense regarding bushcraft knives. Nothing worse than seeing a review of a knife that's just out of the box and costs an arm and a leg.

Late to the party here but wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your video. Your enthusiasm is palpable. You have obviously been at this for awhile now, and thus appreciated the layering of your comments that reflect your very considered journey (thus far!) and of course the various knives that have accompanied you along the way was such a rich experience. Superb. I can't thank-you enough for singing the praises of the more modest options out there. Fun of course to try different knives yes, yes...but in a time of endless hype and promotion your comments and insight were just incredibly refreshing. Delighted to have found you and of course to hear your tip of the hat to Mora, who in the same vein must also be applauded for doing what they do and doing it well. Their longevity and purity of purpose speaks volumes. Thank-you again for reaching out via KZbin to those of us that might never have crossed paths with you otherwise. Truly a delight.

A game changing video. The connection you had with, and the memories you had of, using your knives shone through highlighting that this was an honest overview by an experienced bush crafter. For me this was a far better way of excelling the virtues of various knives than the run of the mill field tests found else ware. I do however have one tongue in cheek complaint. At twenty five minutes long, it became a two cup of tea video and although I like easing my way into a working day my boss thinks two cups is excessive.

I like puukko knives, I have all sorts of different type knives, but one of my favourites is a little traditional puukko with a stacked birch bark handle. My father bought it as a souvenir from Finland in 1954. It has a stiff Caribou (I think) sheath that is the “original” Kydex. It has a line drawing of a Caribou with Suomi written above. The blade is 4 inches long with an upswept tip and the grind is sort of a sabre but without the secondary bevel, so like a scandi but the bevel is quite high like a sabre. Originally the handle was not smooth, I’ve stripped the varnish off and gave it plenty coats of boiled linseed oil, then sanded the handle so it feels nice in the hand. Sadly, it meant loosing the Finnish crest of arms that was on it, but now I have a really nice traditionally made puukko. I was concerned it was just a souvenir with crappy steel, but it was a diamond in the rough! It has taken a razor sharp edge, and holds it well. I’m very proud of it and it’s a nice reminder of my dad, who died 12 years ago.😀

This is a great video mate. It's good for us the fans to see a fellow like yourself recommend very affordable; easy to get knives as opposed to the usual custom one offs, or break the bank beauties. I personally like your take on the matter and have sold off my small but expensive collection (I was suffering badly from stuffication) and bought a single knife that you mention here on this video (the OK4) in their place and it works absolutely fine. Now I can't think of why a dropped all that cash on fancy when plain works fine. Great list mate.

Another great video Neil. Refreshing to see a video on YT that doesn't wang on about the latest, most expensive, shiniest, strongest, carved out of the most incredible materials, etc etc, knife. Because as you rightly point out, it doesn't make your skills any better. A knife is a tool, nothing more. But it's nice to have a good-looking one, and I appreciate the skill, satisfaction and craftsmanship in making your own kit. Handling, or making a knife and sheath is on my projects list. I've made several items already, and shown others, thanks to you. As I heard once; "the best knife is the one you've got"! Best wishes, stay safe and thank you. Bill

Like the video for a number of reasons. First of all I agree that as an instructor you use the same knife students can afford. I did the same with the Mora 511 as in cutting off the handguard but since than also got my hand on some Mora 510's. When I started the Bushcraft Associations changed the instructors knife to Hultafors. Sold a lot of them to students and never had a return. I like the fact that you mention the environment you're gonna use the knife in when it comes to carbon steel vs stainless steel and leather sheaths vs plastic or kydex. I like my knives to look after me and not the other way around. So all in all common sense talk from a common sense guy. Really like those sheaths your brother is making.
@robthompson1399
@robthompson1399 Жыл бұрын
I've got a mora companion heavy duty that I use at work. I treat it hard and keep it sharp. My only complaint is that the sheath is right handed, so I made a kydex sheath. When I wear it, I have it on my belt horizontal. Usually on my front, and the handle sticks out the left side. Sometimes I'll wear it on my left side, and the handle sticks out the back. I liked it so much, that I bought another to customise. I had a real job getting the handle off, then made a cherry and walnut handle with a brass bolster. It's beautiful, but I'll use the plastic one 99% of the time. It's bombproof.

Beautiful presentation of your most used blades! I love the stories they tell and the history that connects you to your knives, it makes them such a valuable and personal item. Great authentic take on this topic. Quick question on your Moras and the hultafors: did you raise the bevel of those knives? They seemed to be higher than what you get from the factory. I like to raise the bevels on my woodworking knives to increase their performance, it's just a nuisance of a job. How did you go about it (if that's what you did)? All the best. I now have some catching up of your other content to do. Came across your channel just now.

An interesting share .. thanks 👍. For me, the best knives are those which one has, uses, are happy with and were paid for without any proverbial watering of the eyes. Some useless info .. my knives (not counting an assortment of Swiss Army / Other Pocket Knives) are .. a Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140, Carbon Steel .. Mora Light my Fire with Integrated Fire Steel .. Opinel 7 in SS (EDC) and an Opinel 7 Children's Knife in SS (sits in my 'kitchen kit' and the rounded blade helps prevent me stabbing myself to death during food prep). Special mention for an Okapi Folder in Carbon Steel (retired .. mostly), bought back in 1972 in South Africa at the local Mine Concession Store for use mainly Underground. These knives meet all of my needs and I have (for now 🤞) 'no further acquisition ambitions' 😁. Take care ..

I have a question. when you talked about leather and weather not going together, do you oil your leather sheaths. It looks like you live in an area much like mine. Wet and humid. Deep East Texas is a temperate forest so i put mink oil on all my sheaths, Bibles ect. Anything made of leather. But because im crippled im not able to get out and test whether or not the oil works on my sheaths. Thats why i ask.

Nice overview! What about the legal aspect? For someone who is not a bushcraft instructor, but just a hobbyist who likes to get out once in a while, will the “reasonable excuse” hold up? I mean there are some “ok-ish” legal knives on the market, but doing bushcraft with those one stands a serious risk of injuring oneself.

Cracking knives, how do you set up your sheath/cordage for your most used knife, where its slung across your body, any chance of a quick video of how you set it up at all, and you seem to favour carrying your knives as a neck carry, why? Many thanks, loving the videos, blessed be, craig
@greencraft4783
@greencraft4783 3 жыл бұрын
Carried around my neck, I'm always aware of where it is. When not in use it can be tucked away (out of sight) but is still close at hand. In the winter and when teaching or working I carry it in the "baldric" style, its close at hand, is secure and can be accessed with one hand. Perhaps I'll do a video just on the sheath as there seems to be a lot of interest.

@@greencraft4783 thank you, a video would be very informative, I've seen the' baldric 'carry being favoured by people, especially in colder climates, but not seen on how to set it up, I believe for people in colder climates, its to do with ,when wearing lots of layers, it can be hard ,accessing a knife safely when worn on a belt, so they wear as a neck carry or the other way, thanks for getting back to me, safe travels my friend, blessed be, craig

Some fairly decent albeit used & neglected knives. I’m sure you keep them sharp but I keep mine clean and shiny, no patina but to each his own and I respect your way. My only gripe with this video is that every knife is of the same type. Not one 6-7” blade or larger. Breaking down elk joints requires a large knife & I love small Bushcraft knives I have a bunch of them but I would’ve liked to have seen more variety instead of multiple Moras.
