@@CAR105729 Sad to hear about your fish, read and watch videos on the Nitrogen cycle and the importance of cycling tanks before adding too many fish for the system to handle, it sounds like the tank wasn't ready for that many fish at once and there was an Ammonia spike that overstressed them. Same for planted tanks, learn as much as possible before you start, it will save you a lot of stress too. Aquarium co-op videos on these subjects are some of the best IMO.

I've been growing and selling Java Ferns for 8 years now and have found the best way to plant them is to put the bottom of the stem in the gravel, and the end of it sticking out of the gravel. Still in my experience they grow no better or worse if they're in the substrate or not

Hi Cory. Thanks to you, I became a plant lover. When I started my tank, and after a while put plants in it, my plan was to have a tank to use as a plant keeper and as fish quarantine before I put it in my main tank, a far more bigger on, the "quarantine" tank is about 20 USG. I put fancy guppies in there, mainly to get a cycle going. The plants I bought was a nice fit for my larger aquarium. And everything was great until I decided to not get a larger tank. Some of the plants are fast growing, don't get these if you're not in to trimming like crazy. The tank looks like a fantastic jungle, the guppies are thriving, but after a while you get overwhelmed - and your plants want light, so they compete about the light, so the tank gets darker and darker. Get slow growing plants, like anubias and such. My plants are doing too well, including the red and purple ones

Cabomba, however, can be planted or floated... and my snails and shrimp looooove it!! And suuuuper easy! Even if it dies back a bit, it comes back full. :) Also, Pearlweed has helped me get started ALOT! planted OR floated! And BEAUTIFUL carpet too! Couldnt keep dwarf sag, baby tears or monte carlo, but pearlweed worked AMAZING for me!!

I ordered a plant bundle that has 10 “easy freshwater aquarium plants” but it’s a mystery bundle so I’m taking notes of every plant so when I get them I know exactly what to do. I’m working on my first ever planted aquarium 40gal community tank. I currently have hornwort, Anubias on my drift wood, Java fern on the drift wood and rocks and I know hornwort can just float but when I ordered it, it was very tall so I’m going to use it towards the back also considering it’s a fast growing plant.

I had Java Ferns in a tank many years ago, and had them planted right down in the substrate. Had no problems at all with it. I originally planted three that sent off runners that eventually took over one end of the tank. Never had any problems with it dying. I used an iron based rock and sand as my substrate, and had no issues of any kind with plants. The only plant I ever had an issue with, was wysteria. The stuff very nearly took over the entire tank. To say that it grew like a weed would be an understatement. Even after I took it out, there would be little bits that I would find growing again a few weeks later. Took me three months to finally get rid of it. I can't remember what the other plants were, but all of them grew to epic proportions while I had the tank, especially the Java Ferns. I eventually gave the tank to someone else when I moved, mostly because it was too big to really transport across three states in a little car, but as far as I'm aware, that guy still has it, and still keeps fish in it.

Have all of these in my tanks! But the one plant I find to be the easiest and prettiest isn't mentioned in this video: Ludwigia repens. Seems like you can watch it growing. Grows sooo fast. It's really easy to propagate, you can just buy a few, let them grow and fill the rest of the tank with it. And it looks quite spectacular when it grows out of the water...

Love this list! I think almost all the plants I’ve gotten were grown emerged. Most of them are finally taking off! One of the first plants I got was water wisteria. It really didn’t seem like the stems were going to make it but I never toss a plant unless it’s gone mushy. Now I have a tall wisteria forest! It’s doing the best by far. A stem plant I think is Ludwigia is doing pretty well too. Most of my swords are finally coming back after completely melting. The java moss, windelov fern, and anubius are tugging along although they’re plagued by a light covering of soft green algae. I accidentally barbered most of the lace on the windelov trying to rub the algae off 😬 In my QT tank I’m clearing some hornwort which is growing like mad despite having only west facing window light! I’ve also got cabomba in there which came by accident when I ordered hornwort the first time. Does great in the QT tank when the light on it but it just melts in my display tank so I’m not sure what to do with it. Above water I’ve got pothos and gold ribbon bamboo growing like mad. The only things that seem like they’re going to die out is frogbit, funny enough, and another stem plant that seems like ludwigia but is definitely different than the others I have. I have a fertilizer regiment but no CO2. I’ve got a plant growing bulb and a small LED. Nothing too fancy. Hoping for a stingray maybe for my birthday 😏 although the fluval 3.0 would be killer! I’m loving plants just as much as fish!! Can’t imagine the tank without them!

Thanks to Cory I have planted my first aquarium! I wasn't a fan of the Christmas Moss or the Bicopa so I removed them. They just didn't look good in my tank, but will certainly work for others. I now have Cryptocoryne Wendtii Green, Cryptocoryne Albida, Limnophilia Sessiliflora, Vallisneria Spiralis and Ludwigia Palustris. I love the greens, browns and reds in my tank. I thought all easy plants were green but that isnt the case. I am so happy with my "easy" plants that I will never go for plastic plants again! Thanks Cory for all your videos 😊

I love this. Could you do a "going green" video? I respect that you talk here and there about being as eco-friendly as possible. I would love to have a succinct video of you giving your best tips to convert a semi-beginner/intermediate tank to one that is more environmentally conscious. Thanks!

Hey man trying to help you out. Cast net will help you catch more fish in Florida lakes. Also, make sure you don't need a license for any state you try to catch fish in. I don't want you guys to get in trouble for netting when some state says it is fishing. The tickets will always be more than the license cost. Liked the video in my state of Florida. Keep up the good work.

I've recently bought a ball of loose java moss, how would I attach that to wood. Like how yours looks contained in this video. We haven't added it yet because we are worried it will over crowd and spread. We have a 10 gallon tank & are beginners, I also have 1 pleco & snail. Along with our other fish.

Instead of using soil under my gravel, could I just buy fertilizer or root tabs to keep most of my plants healthy and growing? I just ordered a good many plants and was thinking about moving my fish to my spare tank and doing a soil substrate under my gravel and letting the tank cycle then adding fish back to it but that's going to cost me a good bit of money with a new filter system heater the whole 9 yards. Any input would be great. Thank you!

Mame sure its organic soil but always better to fork out some extra cash and get the right stuff. If your gonna spend money on your fish and plants tjen spend money on the right products for them.

Is it a known fact or a opinion that java fern make babys on their leafs if they are in stress? I have a huge java fern thats growing like crazy (I dose co2 and fertz etc) and its making babys on the leafs, could this be because its starting to grow out of the tank and it feels its running out of room? Its really massive and it seems very happy so its weird that its showing stress :S (leafs are around 18 inches long and up to 3 inch width

I’ve been scouring the Internet trying to find any examples of what I am currently doing in relation to subwassertang. I am growing it outside of the water on a rock wall it’s doing quite well and thickening up the leaves all the plant seems to be changing to adapt all I’m doing is giving it a constant feed of new water using a spray bar. It gets six hours of light because of the rest of the tank and it seems to be thriving

I put a couple of Comets in a newly set up, planted aquarium to help cycle it, bad mistake, they tore up all the plants, dug through the sand and caused a substrate eruption. I use organic potting soil under sand and it is bouyant when you first set it up. Woke up one morning to a black tank with a layer of potting soil ...at the surface!!! LOL Never again.

Great and informative video for ppl like me "planting for dummies" Iol Ive always loved plants and how they look and make everything so much more beautiful but recently I've tried and failed miserably in my home first time after years and a few houses smh so now the ones that I have and aren't as needy and are prosperous I'm trying to see if I can add some to my turtle tank. I have Red Eyed Snappers 14yo one in a 55 Gallon tank and 2 babies less than a year old in a 30 gallon tank. So initial I put 2 bamboo stalks in the babies tank from a suggestion and they didn't do well at all. Smh I ask ppl all the time questions about planting and they make it seem so easy but it isn't lol so now I'm redoing the tanks and I have a what I googled as a Chinese Evergreen and there's not enough information on them in Tanks for me so I was looking on here to see suggestions and came across your video! So any information will be more than appreciated after this I'm going to go order a few of the plants you just described and also Root Tabs I heard you mention them alot. I just want my tanks to look amazing and I hate the look of fake plants in the tank and the ones that do look real are ridiculously high...but I want my babies to be in the most accurate environment anyway....my goal is to have some type of aquapontic garden in the future! So please help a going crazy planter! Thanks in advance!

Tha Javafern thing where you talk about new shoots at the leave tips, is it really that bad? I've been growing mine for 13 months now in a high-tech tank. I got at least 500 new shoots since I started the tank and the plant itself is really massive and I need to prune it about every 3 months before it starts taking over my entire tank. So I have no brown/yellow leaves, all is green and thriving in my opinion. Anyway, I'm just happy with my tank and the fact I have made a lot of people in the hobby happy giving away those shoots.

Thanks. I finally discovered the kind of crypt I have in my aquarium because of this video. E have it for like 2/3 years. Back then I wanted to buy the crypt brown, but it seems like the guy I bought it from mislabeled it (or didn't actually know what it was lol). I had some problems with my lighting and most of my backgroung plants died. But this one actually thrived and if taking over my aquarium. Have to sell a couple now. lol

Also if anyone could answer my question below I would highly appreciate it! 💗 I don't know if this is the place to ask this question but I have asked in two different groups and nobody will help me! My 55g (Freshwater) communtiy tank has rhabdocia flat worms. I know 100% that it is not planeria but there are a TON of stupid little white flat worms on the glass of my tank! Can ANYBODY help me get rid of them!!!? I know they are harmless but I hate them! I am getting a honey gourami, will it eat them? I am sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but nobody will help me!

What is a good fish to plant ratio in startup? I’m first time with plants. I’ve got low tech. One Amazon sword, one peacock fern, and one clump Repens from petsmart to plant in inert gravel/sand with flourish tabs. Now how many fish? I’m thinking less fish and use fertilizer to makeup the difference. Test and chart the water tests. Then add more fish till I find a balance. Plan is to grow the plants and clone them tell fill out the tank.
