I love seeing the Shannara love. That series does not get enough appreciation. The Sword of Shannara was my first introduction to adult fantasy as well. My personal favorite from Shannara is actually in the follow-up series to the trilogy, Walker Boh.

Thomas Covenant, one of my favorites! Those drawings/paintings in the Sword of Shannara books are probably my most favorite of all time. They are very iconic, which reminds me, a favorite art/paintings in fantasy books would be a great episode! (unless you have already done that)

You're the only KZbinr who gives Dragonlance any attention and that's cool and also sad. More ppl need to know who Raistlin is. More ppl need to know the relationship between his Brother, and between Flint and Tasslehoff. I started your books a while back and about to pick it back up now that I'm done with Stormlight, and I noticed some Dragonlance influences. I hope more ppl read them.

I think that Gollum is one of the most unique characters ever written and really makes Tolkien's stories so special. He has to be my number one.

I've encountered so many memorable fantasy characters over the decades that I can in no way produce a manageable list of "favorites". However, there is one standout; Thomas Covenant. Donaldson's first two Covenant trilogies are what converted me from an almost wholly non-fiction reader into a fantasy fanatic. (I don't count the much later written "Final" Covenant series, which I consider one of my greatest literary disappointments.) Unlike many, I did not and do not dislike Covenant, flawed though he is. In fact, for me it's the flaws that make the man so fascinating.

I love the fantasy characters that make me laugh out-loud. I too love Princess Eilonwy. There is Merlin from Warlord, Matt Cathon from the WOT ( I wish he was a real person) and Tyrion from GOT. Finally, Glotka and Logan Ninefingers!!

I threw the book across the room while reading Thomas Covenant as a teenager (literally hit the far wall). A teammate at the time assured me I should keep reading, but I never did. Totally agree with Thomas Covenant! He is a serious asshole but you cannot help loving him. 😅 Jimmy the Hand is an awesome character but where is my favorite thief, and quite possibly my favorite character of all time- Tas from Dragonlance. Tanis, oh come on, he was great but TAS RULES! 🤣 Seriously, you left out Pug from Magician! Just kidding, great list, I am not as well versed in fantasy as you! However, Tas is the greatest ever character in the history of fantasy, just so you know that! 🤣

You and Jimmy both have the numbering issue. Thank you for not picking Tasslehoff. More of a Flint / Gimli fan. Also for mentioning Thieve's World which seems to be a forgotten series. The issue reading them, a lot like Moorcock, was they books were not numbered even if they were just short stories.

I've got to say I love to hate Thomas Covenant. Some of my favorite characters would be Hawk & Fisher from The Enchanted Forest by Simon R. Green, Sparhawk from The Elenium & The Tamuli by David Eddings, Belgarath from The Belgariad series and sequels also by Eddings, Raistlin Majere from Dragonlance by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Lina Inverse & Gourry Gabriev from The Slayers by Hajime Kanzaka, Guts from Berserk by Kentaro Miura. There are more but those are just off the top of my head.

Wait..Conan at 23????? He should be #1 on anybody's list. Bran Mak Morn should have been there as well. At least you included Elric. I'm fond of Corum also. I started reading Sword and sorcery back in the late 60s. I would have included Zelazny's Corwin. After reading Kings of the Wyld a few years ago I think I'd include Clay 'Slowhand' Cooper as one of my favs. That might have something to do with my being a large but aging guy who still spends a lot of time in the gym with the heavy iron.
