There's actually two Afuri locations in Portland, and I've been there, but they just don't compare to the ones in Japan. Also okonomiyaki, and just walking around and finding something new and interesting. Weirdest foods I had were probably shiokara and basashi. Both were actually delicious.

Everything. But specifically: Currypan. I wish I could get currypan now. Coffee. Even the crappiest coffee I had in Japan is far better than most premium US brands. Ramen/sushi/etc. The boring stuff that everyone knows. The "fried foods" restaurant I went to at the Sky Tree. Croquette, shrimp tempura, chicken tempura (???), another one? It was so good, and the very kind waitress explained how to make my own sauce from grinding the sesame seeds and adding tonkotsu sauce. I just remember it being good enough that I wasn't so upset that the Sky Tree couldn't work because of wind. Every breakfast I had there. Western breakfast: Delicious. Traditional breakfast: Delicious, but not the natto, sorry. Getting conbini snacks: excellent, but that lemonade was actually like 6% alcohol.

Fun tip for people with food allergies! I have Celiac and actually had a pretty awesome time at Combinis. Family Mart brand products have little, in red, at the bottom of their packaged items whether they have soy, wheat, dairy, or nuts. It's in Japanese but really worth memorizing if you want to avoid certain things. Also, the best thing I ate in Japan was this GF chocolate waffle from this restaurant called "Where is a Dog?" They also gave me complimentary slices of bread to take with me when I mentioned having Celiac. Very nice staff 😭💕

I was in Japan for a couple of hours. I walked over a marked and they had a couple of barrels standing there with something in a green and blue liquid. The owner of the shop tried to explain to me, that it was pickled eggplant. I tried one and it was incredible salty. Still no clue what it really was and how you would use that
@reinascully4 жыл бұрын
Ahhh yeah we eat those pickles typically with rice and only a few pieces in a sitting. They're kind of like a palate cleanser between different small dishes (you'd eat the pickles after eating some fish) or as something that makes you simply want to eat more rice, which is why it is so salty. There are some pickles that aren't nearly as salty though, I think the eggplant ones in particular have a lot of sodium.
