Be careful. The tokyo xtreme racer games take place on the highway, only the TXR drift games (or kaido racers) take place on the touge. In japan, there are 3 games in the series that are named kaido battle, in the europe ans us, only two but they aren't the same! The EU has kaido racer, with the first kaido racer being a european release of kaido battle 2 (wich is more if an expansion pack to the original) The US got txr drift, with the first drift being a localisation of kaido battle 1 Kaido racer 2 and TXR drift 2 are both a release of the third game (with the US skipping the second and the EU never getting the first) Kaido Battle 2 is a total imorivement on the 1st but for the 2nd and 3rd it's different. The 3rd has more contend but removes a few cars dorm the 2nd (all being european cars) In short, if you are american, take TXR drift 2, if european, take Kaido racer 2

I've never even heard of Tokyo Xtreme Racer till this video. And lemme tell you I ended up getting Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 (since I already have a PS2) I swear up and down this is the best Initial D style racing game I've ever played. (Plus not to mention many Initial D references in the game itself). The music is pretty amazing itself I personally love the one that plays in the nighttime menu. All in all it's been months since I watched this video but I had to come back to thank you for showing that game to me, it's truly amazing.

Auto Modellista is the closest we'll get to an Initial D game in my opinion, it was made by Capcom for the PS2 and have an "anime" art style, it has only 2 mountain roads but it has a wangan-style highway among other tracks like susuka circuit, it has plenty of JDM cars and they added some american cars too to appeal to the western market, it's an old game with weird handling at a first look, but it's very enjoyable once you get the hang of it.

I'd like to add on by saying that I'd recommend if you can to get the euro version over the american one, the euro one does have less cars and I believe 1 less track but the handling model is 10x better

Genki was the best. Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero was the first game made by them that i bought (in 2021 just for collection), and i ended up loving it to death. And Tokyo Extreme Racer Drift 2 (or 3 depending on the region, or Kaido Racer 2) is widely considered the most realistic PS2 game in terms of physics (although i would argue another favourite gem - Enthusia Professional Racing should have that title).

You should try initial unity. It's a fan made game made on unity platform, of course. It has a really good graphics, detailed cars, maps like irohazaka, myogi, akina, sadamine, akagi, tsuchikabi and another one that iii dont remember :*( Anyway, you should try that game, it's really good.

One game definitely worth checking out is Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift for PS2. Despite the silly movie tie-in, it is very similar to Tokyo Xtreme Drift 2, but it's slightly more arcadey. The game has very extensive car list, licensed customisation parts and very detailed painting tools for a PS2-era game. The game features both wangan and touge style racing and drifting, and actually has very little to do with the F&F franchise - there even is a racing team heavily referencing Initial D in the game.

the decal system in that game is awesome, if you get creative you can make some awesome full body graphics for your car. the gameplay is pretty good too, it's like the average between Need for Speed and a TXR game

Battle gear 3 was released on PS2 in japan. EDIT: Also, arcade stage 4 onwards is based on PC hardware, teknoparrot isn't an emulator, it's a launcher, meaning the games all run natively

Battle gear 2 aka tokyo road race on the ps2 is my all time favourite. The drifting and game physics makes it for me. Ie.. going uphill the car can struggle so u sometimes have to down shift. Also all the cars drift and drive differently depending on if its Rwd, fwd or awd therefore different tracks are better suited to different cars.

number 8 , looks like a mix of Initial D and Wangan midnight. Battle gear has a fairly good selection of cars as far as i like them. i do have a 360 lying around with Forza 2?? but Race driver grid is one to look for if i can get it. initial d 2-3 are still my favorites. played AS4 a fair amount when it was out. skipped over to zero or the one just before that as my north american city stopped at AS4. played a few games on my trip to Japan in 2019 but didnt have time to go that deep into it.

To be fair only real issue I have with Kaido Racer 2 are the soundracks. I tried Kaido Racer 1 as well and comparison is impossible, the second just has SO MANY BAD OSTs Like I don't know what got into them, but the first one had amazing menus, parking lots, racing, every part of the game had perfect osts and for both day and night! Second one seems like Arcade Point Blank at some points, like what the heck...

Number 8 is definately not initial D like.. It's more in the Wangan Midnight / Midnight Club area. Also GRID seems like a weird pick? It has japanese cars /mountain tracks but other than that not really much to do with Initial D. Cause those roads are way too wide / massive to even be challenging. Nowadays you can try playing any of the Initial D Arcades only in available in Asia or other specific places. Initial D Arcade stage 5,6,7,8 and zero have working emulators so it's worth to give those game a try, i used to spend atleast a few hours on the arcades, but now you can play them at home. Mind you, with controller or if u you have a wheel setup even better. But those games aren't for everyone as they might be too arcadey. It's a bit of a pain to set it all up and acquire the files but it's closest to Initial D you'll get.

ngl for that initial d experience i prefer grid 2 theres only 4 touge maps technically but you can race them in several ways in certain sections either the whole mountain or snip bits upphill and downhill all those tracks are hella technical and the game is very arcady and challenging because of it. ofc grid 2 has circuit and city racing but i played grid 2 for years barely touching anything else other than the mountain tracks specially because of the multiplayer community and friends i made on it

Actually, it's completely it's own thing. There is even a second game with motorcycles. I mostly put this one on the list because it feels very similair to both IDAS and WMMT and there are no other games like that on Steam.

You need to try initial unity. Initial unity is a best touge racing game i have ever played. You have there cars from initial D like Rx7, EG6, Mr2, LanEvo and many more but you also have maps from initial D. The whole game looks like assetto corsa and car physics are awesome but it's still more of a arcade game that a simulator
