▪️ Here are the top ten items for my home & garden that I look for when thrifting at Goodwill, Salvation Army stores, second-hand stores, or tag sales:
* baskets
* metal stands
* ceramic & glass vases or caché pots
* t-shirts
* coffee cups
* columnar candlesticks
* shallow decorative bowls
* saucers for plants
* wooden containers
* any kind of container to plant in
Thrifting fuels my creativity repurposes things previously loved and provides objects with a patina of age and use.
I LOVE that. Go thrift something this week:)!

Julia, I now go to the scrap metal junk yard! They let me in and I find old lamp parts, copper pots, wrought iron pieces. I pay by the kilo (I am in Italy) My garage is pilling more and more. treasures Try to see if you can find one near you.

if you come to Colorado very often you will have noticed that Salvation Army Thrift Stores have shut down. The ARC Thrift Stores are popping up all over the place though. I prefer them over all other thrift stores. The first store I went to more then 40 years ago is still in the same location. I will stop there if I happen to be in the Lakewood area.

My mom was famous for gifting a pretty wicker basket filled with household items to newlyweds, often tied up in a set of new sheets. 🙂 Also kept a stash of mismatched china for sharing baked goods at bridal and baby showers, leaving the platters and bowls for the bride/mom. It’s a lovely extra!

@@eurekamarijka This reminded me of my dear mother who died this past Memorial Day at 91. She was a Top Seller for Fuller Brush Company in the 60-70’s and for Christmas, would make up MANY gifts for her customers. A shiny new copper metal dustpan filled with small kitchen essentials and some cookies...all wrapped in clear plastic.and a big bow. We would drive around, station wagon full, 🍥delivering them for hours. How she found the time...with 7 children. Such happy times. 🧹

I always look for pretty plates/platters/bowls to use at our church's twice a year bake sale. A Bundt cake on a pretty plate sells faster - and for more money - than one on a piece of cardboard covered with tinfoil. (Unfortunately, they frequently find their way back to me and then I have to store it...again.)

My teenagers love going to the second hand stores. They call it "going thrifting". I like donating to them, too, including to Restore. But I'm surprised to see everything in Restore is so expensive! Their appliances are almost the same price as new ones. They need to price their items better in order to move their inventory. Way too much stuff in there and very dusty! I always feel like I can't breathe when I'm in there.

I'm a thrift shopper too! I love purchasing large glass and brass chandeliers and removing all the wiring so they can be used as lanterns. I also use the brass part that holds the light bulbs (turned upside down) as wind spinners. Upright floor lamps look fantastic with succulents planted in them. I always find treasures that can be repurposed for use in the garden. ~Margie

Love this! Aside from plants, goodwill makeovers are my faaaave! My very best thrifted planter is a $10 cheap birdcage. It was white with a plastic bottom, probably from Petsmart originally - I gave it a very low key paint job by wiping on black chalk paint with a rag and then wiping a thin layer of cheap antique gold acrylic paint over that to give it that patina look. I placed a large plastic salad bowl in the bottom, also painted black with drainage holes drilled in, obscured the outside of the bowl with some preserved moss, and planted it up with variegated English ivy and asparagus fern. It’s been hanging in a shady nook by my front patio for 2 years. It probably cost me 20 bucks total but it’s so unique and pretty and low maintenance, it always makes me smile. Anyway, thanks for the inspiration to give it a sidekick! 😋🌱

Most of the more severe illnesses happen to people because an upsetting event occurs in their lives taking them by surprise, unexpectedly, impacting first in the brain, then in the corresponding organ which that part of the brain controls. The end of WWI had absolutely everything to do with the Flu and lung TB outbreak that occurred killing millions. In nature, the biological conflict linked with a territorial fear (just what it means-a fear in your territory, your home, your community, etc.) is a widening of the bronchia (tissue loss). Your body attempts to widen your bronchia in order to allow more air into your lungs to give you more strength and energy to fight to keep your territory safe. Stay with me.......The biological conflict linked with a death fright impacts the lungs. The lungs attempt to grow larger in order to allow more air in because breath equals life, as we all know. No breath equals death. While you are in the fear or death fright conflict, you notice no symptoms of “disease”, except you have cold hands, cold feet, you can’t sleep, you awaken at 3 AM every night, you have little appetite. During the war, millions of people were in fear of the bombing of their homes and cities where the war was most active. Fearing for their lives, their loved ones in the war, their ability to survive. The food in the stores was sparse due to shortages. This lasted for 4 long years! The longer the conflict, the worse the healing phase. Within 2 weeks of the German Chancellor announcing the end of WWI, these millions of people ALL went into the healing phase all at the same time. It is during the healing phase that you experience symptoms of illness! What is the healing phase of the bronchia widening? Severe bronchitis, pneumonia. The body attempts to refill this lost tissue and you experience inflammation, fever, coughing, body aches, fatigue, etc. What is the healing phase of the extra lung tissue that grew? Decomposing of the tissue by TB bacteria and fungi. The symptoms of this healing phase are: severe coughing up of blood and tissue, fever, inflammation, severe mucous, body aches, fatigue. During this decomposing of the extra tissue (tumor), the body expels a lot of protein, and without replenishment, severe protein loss can result in death. Antibiotics did not exist yet. If TB bacteria does not exist in a person or they have been vaccinated against TB (big mistake), then the tumor will simply encapsulate and become dormant and not harm you. Who died during the Spanish Flu? Mainly the poor who could not afford to buy meat and proper nourishment, and the people who were directly impacted by the bombings and destruction of their homes. Millions of people suffered fear and death frights during the fighting of WWI, and millions of people all went into healing at the end of it. Not everyone was affected because not everyone suffered the same way. It’s not a “flu”, it’s not something you “catch”. It’s biological, meaningful, and unavoidable. One hundred years later, a Fear Campaign begins, using the media to spread it......

I love second hand stores and yard sales. I saw a painted wood armchair in a home decor magazine and months later I found one at Salvation Army for $25.00. I needed to replace my sofa and love seat and found the exact replica, in much newer condition, at Salvation Army for $165.00. My entire collection of Corning cornflower bake-ware is from second hand stores, as are three sets of dinnerware (one fancy set with serving pieces and two every-day sets). My garden has a red metal rooster 18" tall, and a 36" metal sun made of stainless steel and copper, both second hand. The sun was $30.00 at a yard sale. When I want to relax, I go to second hand shopping.

That divided Detroit box would be perfect to hold cutlery on a buffet! I look for the same things when thrifting and antiquing, but also covered glass refrigerator dishes, serving spoons, pickle forks, and old drapes I can cut up for sewing projects. Another amazing adventure is old hardware stores and farm co-ops, the ones that still have shelves of little cardboard boxes filled with teeny mystery gadgets! I wait until it gets 90 degree and go to work at Lowe's for plants that are marked down. All my plant were bought at 50 or 75 percent off. Because I can't afford the regular price. When I don't know where to put them I just put them in a larger pot and tuck them in a shady spot so they can heal. The only plants I have paid full price for is the snow ball brush and steel hollies and they were a gift to myself. I pay myself also for doing all my gardening work alone. Happy gardening ☺️

Karen Hill: I’ve been thrifting for more than 50 years and I’ve furnished my entire house this way. It’s only in the last five years that I’ve purchased two new sofas. Everything else is from thrift stores or country auctions. Taught myself to reupholster and to make slip covers. Making white slipcovers from canvas drop cloths from the hardware store can transform your soft furnishings! Good quality white sheets can be curtains and all these things can be washed and bleached. Good luck turning your old house into your own sanctuary!

Love what you did with the tiny terra cotta pots on the multi-arm candelabra. Regarding plant saucers... I have found that a darker color saucer recedes and a white or light color catches your eye and sometimes overpowers your pot. As always, thank you for excellent content and beautiful garden.

Thrift stores are my guilty little secret. I love buying to to refurbish (or just use outright). Decorative saucers for spoon rests, candelabras to distress or antique, fancy glasses, etc. It's always a thrill for a visitor to comment that I shouldn't waste my fancy glasses on them knowing I only paid a dollar for the whole set!

Good Afternoon Linda !!! I Loved this video. I Love, Love, Love thrift store's. I find a lot of really neat things in them. I Love your idea with the bowl as giving it as a gift with something in it . I look for plates so when someone is sick I make them a cake and put it on one of those plates. I also put a sign on it that tells them I don't want it back but you can pass it on to someone else who is not feeling good with a cake on it . Oh my am I a basket collector. Thank you for sharing this helpful video with us. So until next time God Bless you and your family and have a Blessed Evening and Stay Safe my dear Friend.

I'm a huge fan of shallow coasters as plant saucers. I also use a lot of those chunky candle sticks to elevate plants on shelves. And my favorite idea is if it's a color you don't like or it doesn't fit with your decor, spray paint is a miracle!

I cannot pass up cute dishes. I live in a retirement community and there is always someone who enjoys a plate of cookies! When I cook one of my favorite meals I use one of my finds to pass on a home cooked meal. The cute dishes, good food, a cute napkin and dessert are always well received. I like to store the plates on my counter as a reminder to do something for someone else. It’s a win win situation! (I will be copying the terra cotta pot with the oranges ... tyvm ... cute idea!)

The Goddard Tool Company was founded in 1916 in Chicago by Paul B. Goddard, formerly of the Illinois Tool Works. In July of 1917, a branch of the company was founded in Detroit, making milling cutters and machine tools for automobile companies including Packard, Studebaker, Maxwell, Lincoln, and Marmon. Goddard moved to a new factory on the corner of Hastings and Forrest in 1919, but by the 1920's had already outgrown the two-story building

Great minds think alike, I've planted in repurposed things forever. My 3 Phaleonopsis orchids have never been happier than in a $.37 picnic silverware basket from Dollar General at end of season. I hang it by the handles & it looks stunning. Going on 3 years now, think I got my money's worth. Currently eyeing the metal frame from a tractor seat, lots of holes, will make a cute succulent "planter". Wine boxes work great too!
